The Christmas Chronicles by Nigel Slater. Read Along Thread 2022

INTRODUCTION

Nigel begins his Chronicles proper on 1st November, but there is a lovely, quite lengthy introduction we can dip into during the second half of October.

Last year, posters were also kind enough to share where they had found cut price copies of CC, so hopefully anyone late to the party still has time to find a copy before we start the first chapter.

I had forgotten the lovely introduction. Together with the beautiful photograph at the very beginning of the book, flipping through it and seeing his headings reminded me of why I loved it so much last year!

Thanks Dilly! It's definitely Christmas when CC comes off the shelf 😍.

Dillidilly · 15/10/2022 09:02

I felt a definite shiver of Christmassy joy when I flipped through my copy this morning Maris...

Currently £20.05 on Amazon, but if last year was anything to go by, there will be better bargains to be had!

Following! Got a copy for Christmss last year.

Goldenphoenix · 15/10/2022 09:07

I bought a second hand copy earlier this year so am ready to go! I bought it from World of Books.

Bookaholic73 · 15/10/2022 09:08

I got it as a gift last year, so would love to join in the read along.

Dillidilly · 15/10/2022 09:23

@Bookaholic73 you're very welcome! I just post each chapter heading in bold on the relevant date, and then we all read/share/try the recipes/be a silent reader.
Last year I managed to make a wreath on Nigel's wreath-making day, make only one Nigel-inspired dish and burn some very un-Nigel candles lol!

It’s on my bedside table ready to be opened for the season, count me in! 🌲

MarpleFan · 15/10/2022 09:27

Oooh following! My copy arrived the other week just for this exact thread.

Bearsporridge · 15/10/2022 09:27

I have it on audible, which is lovely, and I’d love a hard copy too but I quite literally cannot afford it this year at any price. I must check the library to see if they have a copy.

GiantCheeseMonster · 15/10/2022 09:28

I bought a copy too late to the party last year so looking forward to joining in this year.

Peridot1 · 15/10/2022 09:28

Thanks for the thread @Dillidilly. I started last year but fell fairly early. Will hunt the book out today along with my Christmas cake recipe.

Icantremembermyusername · 15/10/2022 09:29

I bought this as my birthday present to myself! DP has it hidden until half term as I knew I would binge read!
Jumping on board this thread :-)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/10/2022 09:31

I have my copy , bought it last year . I keep it down the side of my bed and just open at a random page to read a few pages .

When I serve up food nicely ( ie using a big spoon and slide the food onto the plate , or arrange things neatly , ) my DD says I'm "Nigelling" Xmas Grin

Blantently sets up folding chair to wait in queue

Thank you very much, I am very grateful for this read along thread. I have the [whispers] kindle version, free with my subscription.

It's always here in my phone, no matter where I am actually.

Incrediblebuttrue · 15/10/2022 09:32

I'd like to join, please. My mum gave me a copy in the summer and I hadn't opened it yet. For some reason I thought it started at the beginning of this thread so I'm pleased I saw your post in time!

Mintyt · 15/10/2022 09:33

Oh I had this book as a gift years ago and have never read will find it and read along I will look forward to it

starlingsintheslipstream · 15/10/2022 09:35

Ooh. I'll join too. I'm embarrassed that I couldn't remember if I had the book and am not at home to check but a quick scan of the Amazon account tells me that I bought it in 2018 so I'm all set. Smile

Dillidilly · 15/10/2022 09:39

Welcome everyone!!

I think the Introduction is a lovely gentle read for the next two weeks. I'm off for the weekend shortly, so won't start reading until Monday but please share as you feel inspired x

This makes no sense! I meant I thought it started at the beginning of December!

bananaboats · 15/10/2022 10:41

I got a copy after reading the lovely thread last year, looking forward to reading along!

Ihavedogs · 15/10/2022 12:13

I have actually rejoined so I can join in with this thread rather than just view it!

I don’t even eat meat, so a lot of the recipes are of no use to me at all, but the feel of the book is just so lovely. It is like a great bit autumn and winter hug.

QueenOfWeeds · 15/10/2022 12:15

DH went to a Nigel Slater book signing last December - he told me that he told Nigel that I read the relevant bit every night and apparently he looked delighted and said “that’s exactly how I intended it to be!”

So now I feel like I can get a double buzz out of it.

Following. I’ve just ordered a copy. I’m hoping it will be as good as Delia, Nigella and Christmas at Highclere 😀 🌲
