Christmas food ... where are you food shopping?

Where's everyone doing their Christmas food shop?

Last year I ordered online at Morrisons (just meats, desserts, sides etc., then I do the rest at the supermarket) and remember being a bit disappointed with a few items.

The previous year I did M&S, I've just gone on to do a comparison and the prices are massively higher than Morrisons, though I guess I don't mind paying if it's a lot better quality.

Where's your recommendations mumsnetters?

Local butchers for me.

I'll get the sides as I go along. Probably buy the non perishables in November, and buy, prep and freeze alot eg roast potatoes, veggie pie etc during December. So the only fresh stuff on the day will be the turkey and veg which I'll grab on Xmas eve or the before. If I'm really stuck a few people I know have online shops booked that I can hustle on to.

Determined not to stress this year.

loudbatperson · 21/10/2022 15:14

Everywhere, as people have favourites from all different places! I am so thankful for grocery deliveries as I loath a supermarket in December.

The meat is coming from a local butcher.

Party food and veg is a combo of Waitrose and M&S (via Ocado... no way am I setting foot in an M&S food hall in the run up).

Will also be getting a few bits and a specific dessert from Sainsbury's as it's the children's favourite. The 24th Sainsbury's slot will also act as a backup for anything missing from the Ocado and Waitrose deliveries on the 23rd, although usually we don't get many subs or out of stock items.

hairyunicorn · 21/10/2022 15:18

Everything from M&S on Xmas eve.
Stressful but we like the gamble of not knowing what will be in stock and what will be out. TBH we often end up with loads of discounted items, last year we got a turkey crown for 1/2 price.

MrsMitford3 · 21/10/2022 15:20

I already have my ocado christmas shop booked. I save my shopping list from previous years and just plug it in.

Will pick some things up at Waitrose.

Turkey comes from Copas Farm.

I am def excited...

DrunkenKoala · 22/10/2022 08:20

Usually get the turkey, gammon and a dessert from M&S food to order and the rest from Sainsbury’s. Booked my delivery from Sainsbury’s but still undecided and M&S - need to decide soon as want to pick up on Christmas Eve morning.

CakeCrumbs44 · 23/10/2022 09:08

Meat from the butcher. Everything else from Aldi.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 23/10/2022 09:09

no idea
its only a roast!
tesco is usually more reliable

MrsLargeEmbodied · 23/10/2022 09:11

i shop at lidl, tesco and asda
sometimes sainsbury and waitrose

i usually do online, but then am let down and have to finish off in a selection of supermarkets, two years ago i ended up buying a roast in a bag turkey from waitrose!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/10/2022 09:24

I've already bought a pack of chestnuts Xmas Grin

I think mine will be a very early main shop on the 16th which will be freezer/pantry/ food for that week .Then I can get last minute things like vegetables on the 23rd (I don;t work on a Friday)

I did a sort out of the pantry a couple of weeks ago .

Anything that looks vaguely soup worthy will gp in the soup maker

FallHappy1 · 23/10/2022 19:00

I buy confectionery from mid October onwards from wherever i see them on offer and I buy all the fresh bits anf the meat from asda and some frozen bits from tesco

CuriousCatfish · 23/10/2022 19:07

Tesco where I always shop and possibly a few things from Aldi and Iceland.

slimiscoming · 23/10/2022 19:37

I love this thread, it's making me all
Christmasy 😍

ChicagoBears · 23/10/2022 20:52

Tesco for the basics
M & S for chocolates, crackers, cheese fondue, buffet items
Waitrose the dessert and buffet items.

Ocado as usual I am a hopeless sucker for them plus they delivered week in week out through the pandemic and for that they have my undying loyalty 😁

Yep, me too. My DiL keeps trying to persuade me to use Tesco but I stick with Ocado - long use by dates, good quality fruit & veg. Can't say fairer than that.

@Queenofheart

It's here!

Praline Ice Cream Bombee*

VeganGordie · 25/10/2022 16:11

Definitely aldi or lidl this year with the cost of things!!!!

HashtagShitShop · 25/10/2022 18:44

Will get a few bits from m and s (we only have a tiny food hall and no ocado (no waitrose either come to that) but our main shop will be tesco as it usually is. Because I have a delivery pass with asda I do currently have a slot booked with them though incase I don't get a tesco one.

I really wish m and s would bring back their mince pie Irish cream though. I've asked both years since and they never have done. It was absolutely beautiful!

Whatliesbeneath707 · 25/10/2022 19:57

We've had a mix of experiences in previous years.
Had an expensive (£60 - DH ordered it 🙄) organic turkey from buthers one year that had a big cyst in the meat when we carved it. We did get a refund!
Also had a fancy turkey from Sainsburys that had a thermometer in that popped out to tell you when the meat was cooked, & it came out almost chargrilled! Another refund.
We've since had some frozen turkeys from Lidl or Aldi (£9.99) and they've been great 😆
The most consistent thing we've had is a veg box from a local/posh farm shop. It's £5 and has all the fresh veg to make a Christmas dinner for 2-3 people. The veg actually tastes like veg & cooks in about half the time of supermarket veg!
We've booked an Asda online shop for all the normal weekly food. I imagine the costs are going to be so much higher this year. Takes the shine off it a bit really.

VeronicaFranklin · 29/10/2022 22:18

We get our Turkey and Gammon from the local butcher.

Trimmings and desserts from M&S and some bits from Aldi.

ScareyTerry · 30/10/2022 16:00

Tesco’s, I’ll have £90 of club card point by then. I’ll also have over £70 nectar points so may have a look at sainsburys.
i have an Asda slot booked for the 23rd but once Tesco release their slots I’ll try to book the 23rd and cancel the backup Asda one.

pinkksugarmouse · 18/11/2022 21:16

I am vegan, as DD(19) who will stay over a few days. DH eats meat and dairy but generally eats vegan purely by choice. Certainly not buying meat helps with costs.
He will probably get his special cheese from the market in the next town.

Most of the other food will come from Asda and Morrisons as usual, but we don’t buy in a lot of extra. I will get some fancier bits from Waitrose and we are having hotel chocolat and very little else in terms of sweets or treats. We have homemade mains and I am considering apple and berry crumble and custard for the pudding.

Oblomov22 · 18/11/2022 21:31

Reading with interest. I'm not sure what we're going to do this year. we normally buy most of our stuff from Sainsbury’s. For two years, I've ordered extras from m&s but I just found it too rich and not that fantastic and very expensive and I've looked at their website again this year and I'm just not gonna bother this year.

So I'm going to read this read for any titbits. because I can easily pick a few bits up from all of the supermarkets easily. So anyone with any recommendations this from Sainsbury's or that from Morrisons or this from Waitrose or that from Asda please advise - I'll make a list and then I'll start buying .

mamaduckbone · 18/11/2022 21:38

Aldi! Plus a few posh bits from the farm shop.

Mostlygrumpy · 18/11/2022 21:47

Aldi for everything! Haggis Bon bons and a whiskey sauce for starter. Leg of lamb as we all hate turkey and making my own crispy roasts, honey glazed carrots, pigs in blankets. Aldi's cheese, chutney and Parma ham and pate for Christmas Eve picky bits. They did a profiterole mousse gateau a couple years back that was amazing. M&S and Waitrose are just overpriced and a waste of money in my opinion

Hoppinggreen · 18/11/2022 21:48

I have an Ocado delivery booked for 22nd but no xmas dinner food as we go out
