Christmas food ... where are you food shopping?

Where's everyone doing their Christmas food shop?

Last year I ordered online at Morrisons (just meats, desserts, sides etc., then I do the rest at the supermarket) and remember being a bit disappointed with a few items.

The previous year I did M&S, I've just gone on to do a comparison and the prices are massively higher than Morrisons, though I guess I don't mind paying if it's a lot better quality.

Where's your recommendations mumsnetters?

The rotten turkeys from Aldi were enough to make me avoid them forever at Christmas. Wasn't some of M&S meat rancid the same year?

I stick with Asda now

I have written a note in my Christmas book that the Asda turkey crown I got last year was FAB so I'll be getting another one this year.

All meat from the butchers. Then some bits from M&S and some from Aldi. We don’t tend to buy ready prepared stuff so I make my own trifle, cake etc…And Dh likes to prepare the Veggies.

I agree, I don't buy prepped veg, we love doing the food together and my DH likes doing the veg too

I get turkey crown from Aldi, chocolate stuff from Morrisons, I buy a couple of things each week in December and pofiterole stack and Shortbread from M&S. Large gammon for Xmas Eve I just look about until I see a nice shaped one. Hot snack food for Boxing day buffet from a mix of Aldi, Morrisons and Asda. DH is veggie and insists on getting 1 or 2 of his food items from each shop.

I do this, buy a couple of things a week in the run up.

I got my son a veggie beef wellington last year from Morrisons, that went down well.

Totally agree with being prepared in advance. Over the last couple or months we have paid for our Christmas meat, bought and put away our Christmas booze, added the odd tin of chocolates to our weekly shop, bought our Christmas pudding, and have also stashed away other non-perishables. All we will have to get in the run up to Christmas will be the fresh ingredients.

The next items we will start to stock up on are pricey general household items, such as washing powder etc and put them away as well so that our normal weekly shop is reduced during the run up to Christmas.

EndlessMagpies · 13/10/2022 14:19

We might be buying more than usual from Morrisons this year as a family member now works there and has a staff discount card.

Otherwise, most of it would normally come from Aldi, with some bits from M&S and the local farmers' market.

Sn0tnose · 13/10/2022 14:20

All over the place.

The turkey has been ordered from M&S. Other meat is from the butcher. I save my nectar points all year so have £70 to pay for fresh bits from Sainsbury’s. There’s a pudding I want from Waitrose and we’re getting the non fresh bits as the dates allow, from Sainsbury’s and Asda. Iceland and Farmfoods have got some good deals on cans of fizzy drinks, so we’ll get some bits from there too.

ohhhh I like your idea of stocking up your weekly shop too, I think I will start this now :)

@Queenofheart This has literally prompted me to add stuff to my delivery for tomorrow! 😃

EasyLifer · 13/10/2022 14:33

Mostly from Tesco using the clubcard vouchers which we save all year to spend at Christmas.
A few bits from M n S that we know we like, ready made mash, bread sauce, turkey gravy and some kind of posh biscuits or chocolates.

Fiddledeedeeee · 13/10/2022 16:55

Turkey and pigs in blankets from butcher. Everything else is supermarket bought from wherever is most convenient at the time (I usually order online but not at Christmas after a few years of disappointing subs/ things not available). If I’m getting a ready made dessert it’ll probably be M&S.

mondaytosunday · 13/10/2022 17:08

I did Sainsburys last year - really put off by the fact I had to not only go pick it up but take it through the til!
I've ordered mine through Waitrose this year. Just the main Christmas dinner and Boxing Day (ham). I was still too late for delivery slot though so I'll have to collect (but at least not take it through checkout).

NoWordForFluffy · 13/10/2022 17:46

I've already got spiced red cabbage in the freezer which I made the other week, plus roasties which I grew at the allotment and parboiled / froze a day or so after harvesting them.

I have made a traditional pudding, plus a chocolate cherry one, and will make a chocolate orange cheesecake and mince pies nearer the time.

I'm making sausage rolls to include homegrown chillies shortly.

I'll get sides from Booth's, plus some cheeses. I've also put an order into my local cheese shop to collect on Christmas Eve. I'm also collecting a buffet food order from Morrisons on Christmas Eve, plus have crisps, nuts, crackers etc already from Sainsbury's.

I have the meat already in the freezer, bought recently as lamb was on offer and the duck was a good price (Sainsbury's and Asda).

I have Bailey's and wine / fizz (bought with Nectar points on 25% off 6 offer) already and 3 types of fruity vodka infusing under the stairs!

I'm not doing too badly!

I always used to get our meat from a local butcher but the main one in our town closed last Oct because the owner was arrested and subsequently jailed for being a paedo 😲
Felt really bad for the rest of the staff because they clearly knew nothing and all lost their jobs. The meat was fab from there too. So last year I ended up getting it from Tesco and it was actually really nice. We always have beef and gammon. So I will probably do the same this year. I tend to get most stuff from Tesco as I like their cheap veg deals in the run-up to Christmas, and tend to get things like stuffing balls or pigs in blankets when they might be on deal. I usually find they are also pretty much price-for-price with other supermarkets when it comes to things like Terrys chocolate oranges, large tubes of smarties for stockings, tubs of chocolates etc so I might as well get it all from there, and get the Clubcard points to use throughout the year. I will pick up the odd bit in Lidl if I'm in there, especially their gluwein which is a must every Xmas!

OceanbreezeSun · 13/10/2022 18:17

Aldi for the bulk of it - fancy crisps/cheese/crackers/veg/fruit etc

Tesco/Asda for tops up or ingredients I can’t find in Aldi

M&S for the nice chutneys, pickles & fancy biscuits. I don’t shop there normally but will at Christmas as it’s a one off.

Not sure about meat this year - we pre ordered from Tesco last year & it was good, but might try somewhere else this year.

j712adrian · 13/10/2022 18:23

I've just hunted in my larder, bought the rest of the stuff and mixed and stirred up for 2 one pound Xmas puddings. 2 hours the lot. Steaming tomorrow.

Microwave on Xmas Day, flamed at the table. Much, much better than shop bought.

j712adrian · 13/10/2022 18:25

Did someone mention Booth's?

A class act.

A580Hojas · 13/10/2022 18:30

Lidl have some nice Christmas treats.

Turkey will come from local butcher, Christmas pudding from Marks & Spencer or Waitrose - everything else from whatever supermarket. Probably Sainsburys.

We don't have such elaborate Christmas food that we can't get it anywhere (apart from the turkey).

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 13/10/2022 18:33

Where's the nicest place for desserts? We don't usually bother but we have guests this year. We normally get ocado but I can't see anything that looks special on there (not bothered about cheesecakes or chocolate cakes)

OrangePomander · 13/10/2022 18:33

Meats from the local butcher, a veg box and other bits and pieces from probably Aldi, and M&S for Christmas pudding.

BeetFeet · 13/10/2022 18:34

Lidl.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/10/2022 18:36

Sainsbury- I save my Nectar points for the Christmas shop.
I might get a couple of things from M&S if anything catches my eye .

Only DS and the cats are non vegetarian , DS eats chicken or sausages (ocasionally) so I can buy a couple of chicken breasts to freeze and some of the Sainsbury chipolatas .
We have a Quorn roast and a nut roast -either Lidl or Aldi do a Carrot&Cashew frozen one which is delicious,

Vegetables from Sainsbury . Has to be Maris Piper for the roast potatoes
I make all my vegetable sides except red cabbage but I might give this a try .
Yorkshire Puddings I'll bake but I have from frozen Aunt Bessies just in case

One year DH and I walked into town on Christmas Eve , Asda , I bought some Extra Special potatoes that were vile , tasted like fish EnvyAnd DH said "Oh we don't need bread we have some" ...it was mouldy so we had none

I have a breadmaker now so bake this myself
Frozen pastries and Jus-Rol Cinnamon Rolls

I need to decide on the day to do my main shop (pantry/freezer) , I like the noseying about .
Then last minute things willl be on the Friday .

Amazon deliver some stuff. Not sure if they hold the Christmas range though.

Harridan1981 · 13/10/2022 18:53

We may well have 18 this year so have pre-ordered a massive turkey from m&s. I may well end up getting one from the farm shop anyway in which case I'll just use the deposit on cheese and desserts.

I'll get a normal Tesco delivery for most groceries, farm shop for fruit and veg, virgin and laithwaites for wine.
