Christmas food ... where are you food shopping?

Where's everyone doing their Christmas food shop?

Last year I ordered online at Morrisons (just meats, desserts, sides etc., then I do the rest at the supermarket) and remember being a bit disappointed with a few items.

The previous year I did M&S, I've just gone on to do a comparison and the prices are massively higher than Morrisons, though I guess I don't mind paying if it's a lot better quality.

Where's your recommendations mumsnetters?

Nice stuff and Christmas dinner from Booths. Booze and basics from Aldi.

DrinkFeckGirls · 13/10/2022 19:20

I think the M&S and Aldi source their meat from the same supplier.

I think the M&S and Aldi source their meat from the same supplier.

Do you? Have you got a source for that - a link or anything?

GettingStuffed · 13/10/2022 22:29

Not sure yet, we normally host so buy from our local butcher, tesco, Waitrose and Lidl . This year we're going to my MiLs as DD lives with her as a live in carer. So we'll only need supplies for the time in December we aren't there

spagbog5 · 14/10/2022 16:12

Turkey is in the freezer from covid #2 Christmas last year .
The rest will be Ocado and the local co-op for any bits I forget.

Onionbhajisandwich · 14/10/2022 19:44

We will get turkey for DH from the local butcher, the bulk of the rest of the food from Aldi. M and S do a delicious Cornish cruncher cheese bake and sainsburys do a really nice Camembert so I’ll most likely pick those up if I’m passing either place too.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 16/10/2022 20:27

We always get a frozen turkey, so just working on making room in our freezer for it & will pick that up from Tesco.

I have saved over £150 in Tesco points and their Round Up acct on my Clubcard Pay card so that will do the bulk of the food and drink.

I think there will be anywhere from 6 to 14 people for us on xmas day and boxing day. It's annoying me a bit as no one will confirm if they're eating at mine or not, just say they'll let us know closer to the time. But I need to budget and plan and space is limited and we only have a small oven. If I dont know by the second week in november I'll be telling them all it's too late!! My sister is well known for being the Queen of last minute so she finds my organisational personality absurd.

I get our meat from the local butcher, some bits from M&S usually deserts and party food and the rest just in our normal Sainsburys order.

Snap!

DarlingCoffee · 16/10/2022 20:40

I like the Abel and Cole big Christmas veg box. We will probably get the rest from M&S and Sainsburys

ThreeRingCircus · 16/10/2022 22:17

COOK for the turkey, the gravy, stuffing balls, pigs in blankets and the yule log.

All the potatoes and other veg I just pick up from whichever supermarket is handiest near the time.

Cheeses, crackers, charcuterie, mince pies, Christmas pudding, booze and florentines from Aldi.

The Christmas cake I make myself (tradition that I make it with DDs and we each take a turn to stir the batter and make a wish.)

SpotlessMind88 · 16/10/2022 22:22

Last year i did a Morrisons online order and received hardly anything. Not even stuffing. I did order my turkey from costco (jimmy's farm) in October though and got it delivered xmas eve. This year i'm going to go to Aldi to buy everything and buy the Turkey from costco again

NoWordForFluffy · 17/10/2022 08:01

Anything you order for online delivery from a store is always subject to stock levels. Which is why I pre-order anything I deem to be important from the specific Christmas pre-ordering sections of supermarkets.

Arenanewbie · 17/10/2022 16:31

All over the place. We are small group (3-6), none of us keen on traditional Xmas dinner.
Meat: I browse through Waitrose/Sainsburys/Morrisons and usually end up with Waitrose or Morrisons. I’ve found M&S too expensive and not so interesting for their price.
Cheese: Waitrose and local farm shop
Vegs : fresh from Aldi and Morrisons and then I cook myself.
Dessert: something from M&S, something from local bakery and I bake myself.
Mince pies: Aldi
Wine: M&S or Waitrose, I do buy throughout the autumn when on offer.

TheChosenTwo · 18/10/2022 21:03

Meat from the butchers, veg from the farm shop and all the odds and sods in my usual ocado order. Majestics for the booze.

Did someone mention Booth's?

A class act.

I used to love Booths but I'm finding the use of non-sustainable palm oil in so many of their products has turned me off.

VeganGordie · 19/10/2022 15:43

we'll be doing ours at tesco or sainsburys i feel like there a good mid to get your things from, not too expensive or too cheap

TeaMistress · 19/10/2022 17:31

Normally by now I would have placed our usual Christmas food order from Marks or Sainsburys but I honestly can't justify the prices they are charging. Both have limited selections and the prices are outrageous. I've ordered the meat from the local butcher.

user175438765 · 19/10/2022 17:36

I have got a Waitrose shop booked on the 23rd so most of the Christmas food will be from there, I also have a midweek delivery saver slot with Tesco so will get some from there but slot might not be near enough to Christmas, I don't like to go to actual shops the week before Christmas

NoWordForFluffy · 19/10/2022 18:08

Are you sure, @Lily073?

Christmas food ... where are you food shopping?
Lily073 · 19/10/2022 18:15

NoWordForFluffy · 19/10/2022 18:08

Are you sure, @Lily073?

@NoWordForFluffy Ah - thank you for pointing this out. DH actually queried this with regards to a particular product because the label didn't state 'sustainable' and he wasn't given a definitive answer in store. The staff member may simply not have known so it would be better to state this on the actual product labels so there is no ambiguity. I very much hope this is correct!

PinkSyCo · 19/10/2022 18:23

I’m not sure but it definitely won’t be M&S or Waitrose……unless I win the lottery within the next 2 months. 🤞

reluctantbrit · 20/10/2022 16:31

We are only 3 for Christmas and I love cooking and baking so we buy hardly any prepared food.

Meat comes from the local butcher and the rest from Waitrose. We go shopping together on the 23rd, it works better together in case things aren't in and we need to find alternatives.

Mollymoofer · 20/10/2022 16:39

Lidl this year. Did my big shop there today and couldn’t believe how much cheaper than Sainsburys and Tesco. I prefer an online order for convenience but today was eye opening.

Last year’s Xmas was from M&S and I found it underwhelming for what you pay. So will probably get the bird from local butcher and everything else from Lidl.

The older I get the less effort I’m prone to make due to ungrateful responses over the years - feeling that big time this year! 😂

Oblomov22 · 20/10/2022 16:58

Watching. I found the M&S stuff too rich and sickly. Bought quite a few bits, including deserts. So might just buy sainsburys (cauliflower cheese and red cabbage) this year.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 20/10/2022 17:06

Heads up for people who like lebkuchen, it's already in Lidl right now
