Stop the Calvary - a Christmas song or not?

After a lengthy debate with my sister who randomly blurted out to me and DS earlier that stop the Calvary wasn’t a Christmas song, I’ve decided to put it to the masses.... so what are we saying... Christmas song or not?

Frazzled2207 · 10/10/2022 22:13

00100001 · 10/10/2022 22:13

It isn't.

bellac11 · 10/10/2022 22:13

Well its a war protest song but has a lot of christmassy sounds and images in it

bare · 10/10/2022 22:14

Never hear it anytime other than Christmas so someone must think so!

RoachTheHorse · 10/10/2022 22:16

"Wish I was at home for Christmas" is a lyric and it has sleigh bells in it. So, yeah!

RoachTheHorse · 10/10/2022 22:17

More so than "stay another day" 🤣

ReedOfFate · 10/10/2022 22:17

It’s on the Now That’s What I Call Christmas album ( the original one), so yes!

00100001 · 10/10/2022 22:17

It's a song about WWII that happens to mention being home for Christmas. if you took this three repeated lines out,. This is the song

Hey, Mr. Churchill comes over here
To say we're doing splendidly
But it's very cold out here in the snow
Marching to and from the enemy
Oh I say it's tough, I have had enough
Can you stop the cavalry?

I have had to fight, almost every night
Down throughout these centuries
That is when I say, oh yes yet again
Can you stop the cavalry?
Mary Bradley waits at home
In the nuclear fall-out zone
Wish I could be dancing now
In the arms of the girl I love

Bang! That's another bomb on another town
While the Tsar and Jim have tea
If I get home, live to tell the tale
I'll run for all presidencies
If I get elected I'll stop, I will stop the cavalry

Wish I could be dancing now
In the arms of the girl I love
Mary Bradley waits at home
She's has been waiting two years long

Hardly Christmas material...

an interview for Channel 4's 100 Greatest Christmas Moments, Lewie said that the song was never intended as a Christmas hit, and that it was a protest song. Indeed, some overseas releases (for example, in South Africa and New Zealand) were in the spring rather than at Christmas. The line "Wish I was at home for Christmas",[3][4] as well as the brass band arrangements made it an appropriately styled song to play around Christmas time.

sanityisamyth · 10/10/2022 22:18

Calvary, or cavalry?!

00100001 · 10/10/2022 22:18

It the same as Die Hard. Not a Christmas film at all, just happens to be set around Christmas. But it's not about Christmas.

Might as well be set at New Year's.

Raera · 10/10/2022 22:20

It's cavalry
Calvary is where Jesus was crucified, also not appropriate for Christmas

DinosaurPyjamas · 10/10/2022 22:20

It's the best Christmas song!

How dare you, you fiend. Take it back! Grin

Dollydea · 10/10/2022 22:21

100% a Christmas song. One of my favourites too.

shortpeopleproblems · 10/10/2022 22:22

There's mention of snow and jingly bells! It's certainly more of a Christmas song than Angels, or The Power of Love, which are also on the Christmas albums?

MistyGreenAndBlue · 10/10/2022 22:22

Yes. It's a Christmas song.

Sisisimone · 10/10/2022 22:23

Its never crossed my mind for a second that its not a Christmas song.

HoobleDooble · 10/10/2022 22:23

Yes it is, it contains the line "I wish I could be home for Christmas" ... even though my DS used to sing "I wish I had a bum for Christmas" and I never corrected him.

UserNameNameNameUser · 10/10/2022 22:26

Christmas song, definitely.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 10/10/2022 22:41

It definitely is. It is one of the less annoying ones too.

It has Christmas lyrics and Christmas sound effects and a message of peace on earth

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 10/10/2022 22:44

I shall be showing my sister all of these replies in the morning, just to prove that I was once again right 😂

Yep and kind of the best

AlternativelyWired · 10/10/2022 23:13

Awww, one of the Christmas songs of my childhood and still a firm favourite.
