Lovemusic33 · 14/10/2022 21:11

I have only bought one thing and that’s a item of clothing for dd (18), haven’t really thought about buying anything else yet. Now DD’s are older it’s harden to pick up things early, dd2 will want a big Lego set but not sure which one. I am not bothering much with family this year as I always get stressed trying to find nice things for people and then they don’t use them and/or we get nothing in return. Cutting right back and will just buy small token gifts for parents (bottle of gin, chocolates etc..).

Whycanineverever · 14/10/2022 21:18

Did (12) is getting a new phone as she has (rather surprisingly) not lost / broken the old ones she has yet at secondary.
I have got her a positivity pebble in a tin I think she will like. She wants body sprays and some other little bits.

There is a lady near me who paints pebbles - I got a Taylor swift album cover one for my older dd (15) for her birthday and I am ordering another one for Xmas. No idea what else she will want. Probably books and maybe couple bits for her room. Other than that cash.

I thought it was October... 🤣 and yes it is October, but this is also a Christmas thread so if your so against buying Christmas presents now why are you checking out posts about Christmas 🧐

I feel like I live on another planet.

I think I am a generous person, love to make an effort and fuss at Christmas and not a puritanical non consumer. But, I find these previous posts utterly impossible to understand or identify with because:

  1. It's only mid October. How/why are people taking time out of their lives to shop now, more than two months before Christmas?
  2. Who on earth are people buying SO MUCH for their kids? A large proportion of this stuff will be disregarded/forgotten within days. It will clutter up your house and be added to the list of things you have to do something about ie. find storage space for, throw out or take to a charity shop within the year
  3. It is totally mystifying how anybody at all can afford to spend so much money in the present economic situation. I'm not being judgemental, just literally where on earth does your money come from?
  4. And now, to be judgemental, it might sound like a cliche but honestly, buying so much stuff will not make you, your children happier and is depleting your bank account and adding to our environmental disaster.
  5. I have brought up several children who are now young adults. Please take it from me, you will regret this frenzied consumption.
RoseMartha · 14/10/2022 23:57

Just made my friends a pamper box each about £6 per person x 6. Which was cheaper and has more in it, than the ones I saw you can buy.

Bought my teens a couple of stocking fillers also.

Need to buy for 10 people. All family.
Hopefully will cost me between £250- 300 in total.

I think you are on the wrong thread .
This is for people who enjoy chatting about Christmas so save the negativity for AIBU or chat .

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 15/10/2022 06:02

If you're buying it, it's bought. If you're bringing it, it's brought. I've bought one personalised item so far for my son's girlfriend.

I've been shopping since the boxing day sales started! I picked up nightwear and slippers first and clothing for dgd (6). I prefer to spread the cost, put time and thought into gifts rather than running around during the festive period. Plus I save a fortune buying earlier. Because I've put time and thought into it I'm not buying lots of unwanted tat. This year we are gifting dreamland heated throws, which I found discounts for, and are now sold out everywhere. Same with the ninja foodie ive bought for dgd & sil. Ive also bought kuddlys hoodies at the start of the year at 2 for £39 (hot deals uk find) they're now £49 each ! I'm done apart from confectionery. I've made 3 christmas puddings too! I think prior planing makes for a stress free December. I also think shopping early is a good idea if your buying second hand, you'll have much more choice and it'll be much easier to source things than it would be leaving it till later. We have 1 adult dd who hasn't been ruined by my early shopping and hasn't turned into a spoilt consumer brat. Your entitled to your opinion, I have a couple of friends with young children who could of wrote this, although they're a bit more focused on their own consumerism and end up shopping at the last minute and buying loads of tat for their kids. Each to their own, but I prefer the prior planning and preparation method, for Christmases when money has been tight and better times. My advice for anyone struggling this christmas and wanting to get gifts for children is to do so now, start looking at free cycle or other similar now.

PuttingDownRoots · 15/10/2022 08:50

In my Christmas box I now have...

  • board game (for DH, DD1 and DD2)
  • book (DH, about Sandhurst)
  • funky shower gel (DDs stockings)
  • coffee (me)
  • chocolate carrots (DD1)
  • chocolate snowballs (DD2)
  • warhammer figures (DH)

DH has bought the stuff for him himself. I've bought my own coffee and coffee machine. We will be very surprised on Christmas Day 😂

I’ve bought absolutely nothing. And don’t plan on it until the first weekend in December - I always do my Christmas shopping then 😂
some of you are so organised but I’d be annoyed storing so much stuff for such a long time and would definitely forget where most of it was 🤣
