I just ordered the first Christmas present for DD (will be 20). I got some good advice here on mumsnet & bought her a wax melt burner with melts.
I have or have ordered all her birthday presents for 29th of November.

I am pretty sure what else I will be getting her for Christmas. Just a couple of gifts as she is older now & not a dependent child. She will get gifts from her Dad too.

The only other gift yet to buy is DH’s

These threads make me really pleased that we moved abroad. We don't do presents anymore, only for our son and maybe a token gift to husband/me. Usually I pick some item of clothing I want and husband gets trainers, jacket etc. I remember a few year back buying my niece and nephews presents, it was madness, I never see them, I had no clue what they were into or liked. That was the moment I realised that I was living in a crazy world where everyone is spending money on gifts that no one wants to receive or buy. We now go out for a lovely meal. I ring my parents and its stress free.

Not everyone buys for extended family, friends they don’t see anymore and work colleagues they know nothing about as part of secret Santa. Or the utter crap foisted on teachers and TA’s. Think cellphone wrapped snot covered fudge and best teacher baubles and mugs.

I certainly never have. I think increasingly people are becoming aware of the huge waste of money and environmental damage of unnecessary gift buying out of habit and/or obligation and of course giving people things they really don’t want and then feel bad for binning or have to make a trip to the charity shop.

MissyB1 · 08/11/2022 20:09

We are doing a secret Santa at work, budget strictly £5 max. I’ve bought the M&S hot chocolate light up lantern.

My sisters and I just do a little foodie hamper for each other, we all enjoy them.

I feel like I live on another planet.

I think I am a generous person, love to make an effort and fuss at Christmas and not a puritanical non consumer. But, I find these previous posts utterly impossible to understand or identify with because:

  1. It's only mid October. How/why are people taking time out of their lives to shop now, more than two months before Christmas?
  2. Who on earth are people buying SO MUCH for their kids? A large proportion of this stuff will be disregarded/forgotten within days. It will clutter up your house and be added to the list of things you have to do something about ie. find storage space for, throw out or take to a charity shop within the year
  3. It is totally mystifying how anybody at all can afford to spend so much money in the present economic situation. I'm not being judgemental, just literally where on earth does your money come from?
  4. And now, to be judgemental, it might sound like a cliche but honestly, buying so much stuff will not make you, your children happier and is depleting your bank account and adding to our environmental disaster.
  5. I have brought up several children who are now young adults. Please take it from me, you will regret this frenzied consumption.

Wow!!! You have gone out of your way to try to shame people who maybe, just maybe have the finances and the space to shower their loved ones how they see fit! ... Get off this thread @Byfleet you sound jealous.

AnneButNotHathaway · 09/11/2022 10:34

Coming here for ideas, but some of those replies, though... Why shame people for shopping when it's convenient for them? Or even shopping at all? I know people who don't enjoy the whole gift giving / receiving process in general, a simple smartshow 3d video card would do it for their Birthdays, but why be judgemental about that? Or about those who like and have means to go above and beyond? Besides, Christmas shopping done mid October isn't crazy, it's actually pretty reasonable in a way.

dementedma · 09/11/2022 11:04

Christmas shopping early is good financial sense. Most things I have bought have been discounted or on sale before the price hikes of December.

Sidking · 10/11/2022 00:31

I'm almost done, I need to get OH a jumper and a game, and I need to do stockings for the kids, and I've got 2 blankets to collect for my niece who will be here by Christmas! And I'll need to get my gran and grandad something but I've no idea what yet and neither do they 😂

2 x Gravity Falls books (one is a copy of Dipper's from the cartoon)

octaurpus · 10/11/2022 07:51

oops pressed post

2 x Timmy Tobbson books, which I found second hand online from the US
2 x Kid Phantom comics
Jenga
Powerpuff Girls season 5 DVDs, purchased second hand on ebay

I also need to find an action figure type thing. No idea what to get, he's into cute things, but is a bit self-conscious about it. He asked for an action figure, but I need a cute one. Sigh.

Nothing for anyone else, It's been a terrible year, my DB died suddenly a few months ago, and I just can't think about buying for anyone other than my DS right now.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 10/11/2022 07:58

• It's only mid October. How/why are people taking time out of their lives to shop now, more than two months before Christmas?
You have to take 'time out of your life' to do it at some point, so why not whenever it suits you? I shop when there is still stuff in the shop that isn't all Christmas tat, makes much more sense
• Who on earth are people buying SO MUCH for their kids? A large proportion of this stuff will be disregarded/forgotten within days. It will clutter up your house and be added to the list of things you have to do something about ie. find storage space for, throw out or take to a charity shop within the year
I agree with you on this one. 'Each to their own' - people can buy what they want but we shouldn't just be buying for the sake of it. Even though I never bought at as much as some people, I was also guilty occasionally of buying 'bits and pieces' just to make the pile bigger.
• It is totally mystifying how anybody at all can afford to spend so much money in the present economic situation. I'm not being judgemental, just literally where on earth does your money come from?
It's not that hard to work out that whilst everyone is impacted by the current economic situation to some extent, not everyone is impacted to the point where they can't carry on doing normal things. But even before this, I'd read about people going into debt to 'give their kids a good Christmas' - if that means buying masses of presents then that is really sad and people need help to understand how they can make Christmas special without spending too much. - severs threads on here - head over there and lend some support

• And now, to be judgemental, it might sound like a cliche but honestly, buying so much stuff will not make you, your children happier and is depleting your bank account and adding to our environmental disaster.
I agree with this to some extent, if less dramatically!

Main presents for my DC:

DS 20 - Airpods, Eau Sauvage, fatface animal slippers and a hoodie

DS12- Computer game, Nike hoodie, Christmas onesie, sushi making kit and recipe book, new boxing gloves.

DS 8 - the new Sonic playstation game, Christmas onesie, remote controlled car

All stuff they've asked for. Trying not to buy too much this year, my husband always goes way over the top for them and gets far far too much 'stuff' that they don't need or really want. The two younger boys both have birthdays in December as well.

All three are getting a stocking full of Christmas chocolates, sweets, hot chocolate bombs, bath bombs, fancy slipper socks and a book each.

Cherryrainbow · 12/11/2022 18:34

For son age 9, stepson age 8, daughter 2. Bought throughout the year, they done and wrapped x

Do you mean bought or do you bring them from somewhere ?

Some earlier pricks have already pointed out the OP used incorrect grammar so you're rather late.

Mind you, they at least had the comprehension skills to know exactly what the OP meant.

Filleto · 13/11/2022 07:55

@Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure my 15 year old ds has asked for

A hoody
new football shirt x2 (one England, one for his team)
new ps controllers
wireless headphones
ps plus for the year

In his stocking he’s getting
A flickin chicken (token joke/novelty gift because he still likes getting those)
A metal infinity puzzle (because he’s a fiddler)
a stress ball (see above)
Boxing rebound headband ball thing
socks x 6 pairs
4 cans of lynx antiperspirant
chocolate coins
tube of sweets
charger cables x 2
a tree decoration
Some of that prime drink if I can get any but I’m not making 6am trips to asda to try!!
He’s just qualified as a ref so I might add in spare red/yellow cards and a spare whistle

Yes it’s a big stocking 🤦🏻‍♀️ Hope that gives you some ideas .

Filleto · 13/11/2022 07:57

@EllaPaella where was the sushi making kit from? My dd is obsessed with sushi at the moment

Calling people pricks is bloody awful. Using the right word is actually important. Especially when you're asking a public audience a question.

-fitbit (Amazon prime deal)
-wwe plush
-lights for his bike
-giant Pringle box
-travel game of monopoly
-lynx set (the only thing he’s asked for 🤷🏻‍♀️)

need to think of something for my Ddad!

Hi can you tell me what the giant Pringle box is and where you got it from. My son loves pringles so this sounds great 😁

I used the word pricks because cunts seemed a bit strong but now I think about it, it would've been more fitting.

And stop pretending the OP's wrong word means it's not obvious what she meant 🙄
