WanderingHolly · 22/12/2007 14:33

I have read enough 'shopping hell' threads to conclude it is better to starve over Christmas.

I want to shake people in supermarkets and say "You do know the shops will open again, don't you? They aren't shutting forever."

Christmas. Festival of overeating.

Pebblemum · 22/12/2007 14:37

I did all my Christmas shopping on Thursday and that was bad enough. What we havent got we can go without, there is no way im venturing anywhere near a supermarket. if the worst comes to the worst we will resort to beans on toast lol

LyraSilvertinsel · 22/12/2007 14:39

I paid through the nose for an Ocado shop rather than brave Sainsbury's with my two DSs. It would have been hell.

Carnival · 22/12/2007 14:40

Thank crunchy I got a delivery slot booked, it really can ruin a day, it's like ferging zombie-town in our tesco and I constantly have to fight the urge to punch people in the back of the head. Yes, she's two and yes, she's crying and yes, if you don't move out of my way she's going to drench me in piss. MOVE!

Sorry, I got myself going there.

Home delivery is a marvel.

bonkerzaboutxmas · 22/12/2007 14:40

my neighbour got back from 3 hours at asda just as my tesco delivery pulled up! Tried so hard not to look smug when she was lugging the bags in and moaning about queues and lack of veg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PartridgeinaRustyBearTree · 22/12/2007 14:41

DD has a Christmas temp job in Woolies & she's working tomorrow and Xmas Eve. She's dreading it, especially as she works on the media counter. Surely the customers must know that yelling at a 17 year old counter assistant isn't going to help, but they still do it...

CountessDraculaboredofxmasname · 22/12/2007 14:42

thank goodness for Ocado!

wotz · 22/12/2007 14:43

Online shopping is great - plus because they were 40 mins late I was refunded delivery cost and given an extra £5 for the inconvience. Arrived yeaterday.

Marne · 22/12/2007 14:43

I went a 8am,took 20 mins to park, people grabbing sprouts, banging into each other, i will never shop again

I got half way round when the tanoy goes ' pleease can evryone check that they have the correct trolly , if you hav'nt got the correct trolly and you have someone else's please could you return it to costomer services' lol

pagwatch · 22/12/2007 14:44

I am having a nightmare because my son with profound asd wants to go and look around he shops ( he's making his list, he's checking it twice ) but as soon as the crowds build up he just gets knocked all over the place.
A woman in Game yesterday tried to run him over with her buggy and then shouted at him. He can't speak very well and he certainly couldn't understand her. I'm hoping he couldn't understand my retort .
I took him out at 8.30 this am. Quick coffeee and marshmallows and then to shops - home by 9.30. Thank god I live in town !

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 22/12/2007 14:48

I had to go into town with the boys as they delivered us a DVD with its security tag still on...thank goodness I had the receipt...well the alarm went off in WHSmith, but not Tesco and I went up to what I know now was the manager, wielded said receipt and asked smilingly if they had a way to get the red thing off.
He looked at me like I had two heads/he had seen me on crimewatch, then proceeded wordlessly to dial the number for the shop that do deliveries. I don't know what he was asking them. It was too noisy. In the end some geeky saturday boy managed to get the red thing off our DVD and they kept offering us a new box, which I didn't want, and I went off to pay for a doughnut Ds1 had swiped while I was busy.
Manager bloke came up to me at the self service checkout and said he might have the other DVD I wanted in a bargain bin at the back of the shop. But by then I just wanted OUT. Poor bloke. It looked horrendous in there.

MissusHoHoHo · 22/12/2007 14:52

I went last night at 9pm and it wasn't too bad.

The biggest danger was from the shelf stackers - the feckers made the aisles into a bloomin' assault course!!!

needmorecoffee · 22/12/2007 14:54

I'm going to put blades on the wheels of dd's wheelchair then venture out.
We're only going for a walk but we live close enough to the supermarket that we can go gawp at the scrum and the 6 mile traffic jam.

pagwatch · 22/12/2007 14:55

my house backs on to the approach to one of the main car parks in out town. We wave at them and then skip down to the shops

WeWhizzzYouAMerryXmas · 22/12/2007 14:59

Its is really bad then ??????
DH has yet to go out......

WeWhizzzYouAMerryXmas · 22/12/2007 15:00

That shoudl have read IS IT .

Raahh · 22/12/2007 16:45

oh, Partridge, i feel for your dd. i work at John lewis in customer services, and am amazed at how rude people become at xmas. No amount of yelling is going to produce a Nintendo Wii from under the counter.... Tell her to take a deep breath, remember she will prob never see any of them again, and wish them a merry xmas through gritted teeth...

as for tesco, our local was reasonable this morning, i was quite surprised. Last year i fatally left it to Xmas eve , with two toddlers in tow. The staff were giving chocolates out to customers in the queues cos it took so long...

hedgehog1979 · 22/12/2007 17:04

feeling slightly smug as MIL has offered DH and I christmas dinner this year. No visits to supermarkets. Used to work nights in a huge woolies stacking the shelves at night and used 1 hour ?Lunch? break 2.30am - 3.30am to go to Asda - no people, lots of friendly staff 24 hour shopping rocked

Although DH has decided I need to go into town with him 2moro to help him pick my christmas presents!!!

OrmIrian · 22/12/2007 17:07

I'm not surprised the poor staff looked miserable. Christmas shoppers can be sooo rude and demanding. I don't have to do any more this year (apart from fresh bits and pieces). I remember wanting to deck some woman in Asda last year for tearing a strip of some lass in a Santa hat because they hadn't got the right kind of MSG-noodles. She was so rude and the poor girl looked near tears. I mean FFS pot noodles! Does it really matter that much? It makes you feel ashamed to be the same species sometimes

CliffRichardSucksEggsInHell · 22/12/2007 17:09

We went to Asda for some last minute things yesterday. It wasn't too bad, people on the whole seemed happy enough and on the checkouts a lady was going up and down with a huge tin of Quality Street offering one to the kids.

callmeoverchristmas · 22/12/2007 17:14

I did most of ours on the Farmers Market today and it was rammed! I just need a quick dash to Tescos which I am going to do tonight when DD is in Bed. Wish me luck

DrNortherner · 22/12/2007 17:17

I am off to M&S food hall tomorrow morning and dreading it

Dh is in town now buying my present. I told him it will be mobbed but he disagreed.

SantaPleaseStopHere · 22/12/2007 17:34

I went to asda at 3am and got home at 5.30am!
All would have been well if the lazy feckers would have opened a till instead of making everyone use those ridiculous self service ones for a full christmas shop grrr

I had nightmares about having to 'skip bagging'!

jinglebells2shoessmells · 22/12/2007 17:38

needmorecoffee pmsl that is a very good idea

MrsGrinch · 22/12/2007 17:38

Shop local 'tis much better.

Turkey, ham, bread, fruit and veg on order to be collected tomorrow, cream from milkman, non-perishables bought ages ago.
