Voucher just less crap than cash if impossible to get presents, I would have said. Looks as though at least some thought has gone in to it, and it means that the voucher is more likely to be spent on the recipient rather than disappearing into general housekeeping.

discoverlife · 20/12/2007 22:35

I tried really hard to persuade my DS1 NOT to go into catering. He wouldn't listen. He now works about 50 hours a week, travels 90 miles a day because of the split shifts and thinks it will be 2 more years before he can think of getting a mortgage for more than 80k.

oopsitisanimmaculatconception · 20/12/2007 22:36

why the hell are you doing this for him anyway?

let him sort it our for himself, he's a grown up isn't he?
jeez

DontWantToLookTight · 20/12/2007 22:37

Oooh, the cheeky wee devil, I don't think he can even know that m & s is there. It's quite close.
OK, not in the city, but a city firm iykwim

I think a lot of us do these kind of jobs when we are younger.

I have had a lot of jobs where i was working lots and not getting paid much for it.

Twinklemegan · 20/12/2007 22:39

"what an earth sort of job earns one £125k??"

And what on earth sort of secretary earns £35k?? I made some seriously wrong choices earlier in life I think.

DontWantToLookTight · 20/12/2007 22:39

it's not quite close, it's right next door. hmmm

the law twinkle, legal secretaries

Lauriefairycake · 20/12/2007 22:40

I don't think its just luck - just a very sad indication that we validate and reward bean-counters and hedgefundy (gamblers) more than we do nurses/teachers/cleaners

Its just amazing what society says is important. I used to be married to a bean counter - I had much better qualifications than him - he went into accountancy and earned a £100k and I went into charity work (important charity work) for £25k

bananabox · 20/12/2007 22:41

Hmm - best not to say much more or we'll all know who he works for - if we haven't already worked it out

To be fair it is only an M&S food store, but it does do vouchers!

cutekids · 20/12/2007 22:41

i seriously would prefer my hubbie to come home with petrol station flowers than a load of pretentious shit!SORRY BUT...no matter how clever/covert,a woman knows whether her husband did the choosing or his secretary had...!NO MATTER HOW CLEVER SHE THINKS SHE'S BEING....!!!

bananabox · 20/12/2007 22:42

Well without the bean counters and hedge fundy people there would be no money to pay for health workers and cleaners etc.

Having said that, I have long since detached earning power from value in my mind!

DontWantToLookTight · 20/12/2007 22:42

yes, I thought that, but then it doesn't matter as I've name changed

Twinklemegan · 20/12/2007 22:42

Is this legal "executives" then, or just secretaries? I hope they've all at least got good first degrees earning that kind of wage. I don't intend to sound mean-spirited, but I'd love to know what they do to warrant that kind of money. In my line secretaries/PAs earn half that if they're lucky.

bananabox · 20/12/2007 22:43

Ctekids - but it isn't anything to do with your DH[bemused look]

Eric, stop digging now, dear

FlamesparodyOfAChristmasName · 20/12/2007 22:43

I like the wine idea. I would prefer that to money or vouchers - it has a bit more thought, but not too much thought iyswim

noddyholder · 20/12/2007 22:44

cash is patronising tbh.A voucher for somewhere swish is good.Unnecesary to post partners wage though and 125k is minted imo when compared to average jo.A bit insensitive at this time of year but thats life I suppose

DontWantToLookTight · 20/12/2007 22:44

no degrees, just legal secretaries, don't know much about it, but they have specific qualification, and the good ones are very skilled

OP posts:
myDHisinthesameboat · 20/12/2007 22:45

laurie I don't think it's what society says is important, it's supply and demand really when it comes down to it, plus what's reasonable based on the amount of money sloshing about whatever institution the person is working for.

The NHS couldn't justify to the tax payer paying, say, nurses huge sums, and charities can't justify to people putting their 50ps in the tins paying their employees huge sums either. Plus lots of people want to work for charities, (myself included), and accept that the rewards (financial anyway) are not what you could get elsewhere.

cutekids · 20/12/2007 22:45

CALLING ALL SECS...TELL YOUR BOSS TO DO HIS OWN SHOPPING.....PLEASE...AS MUCH AS YOU THINK WE HAVEN'T GOT A CLUE....WE ARE PROBABLY MORE AWARE THAN
SOME
SILLY LITTLE GIRL...

FlamesparodyOfAChristmasName · 20/12/2007 22:45

The wage DOES matter though. If he was on £30k and she was on £10k then spending much less would be reasonable

bananabox · 20/12/2007 22:45

No I don't think it is a law firm!

A fairly new secretary is on around £20k these days in the City and it rises fairly quickly from there on.

A PA (or senior secretary) may very well have a degree though.

FlamesparodyOfAChristmasName · 20/12/2007 22:46

Cutekids - I sense a whole other thread of issues here...

bananabox · 20/12/2007 22:46

Cutekids - you have got it all wrong - this is about the OP buying a present for her DH's secretary - not the other way around!
