OK, OH earns 125k, his secretary probably earns 35ish, how much should he spend on her Christmas present?

Crikey, I know many many very skilled people doing really important jobs and working for peanuts. Society sucks, it truly does.

Re a present, well I got a box of chocolates from my relatively minted (but still fairly low paid) public sector boss. Wouldn't that do?

bananabox · 20/12/2007 22:47

Ah! It is a law firm, so not where I thought

FlamesparodyOfAChristmasName · 20/12/2007 22:48

I don't understand why people are so upset about someone saying their OH earns 125k "at this time of year"

DH doesn't even earn 1/5 of that, as much as I sit and gaze wistfully thinking what I could do with the money, I don't begrudge someone else having it!

myDHisinthesameboat · 20/12/2007 22:48

cutekids this thread is about buying a present for someone's secretary, not secretaries buying presents for wives....

MummyDarlingSausage · 20/12/2007 22:48

I think eric has a point. My dh has a stressful job that takes him away from home for 1/2 of the year (not in one stint) and he is spending his second christmas and new year in a row away from home and missing ds's first christmas. I know lots of people have stressful jobs/long hours but often the higher paid jobs are jobs that not everyone could or would do. My dh deserves a decent salary.

Boogalooblue · 20/12/2007 22:48

Does he like her?

Does she actually do a good job?

Why feel obligated to buy her anything?

seriously, my dh's secretary will expect a present but he is recruiting her replacement and she is shite, fuck it, a present is a gift not an obligation

mysonsmummy · 20/12/2007 22:48

i am a cleaner and have had a variety of presents. one couple i have just started working for are lovely - they gave me £50 cash, but also wrapped a pressie to put under the tree. i was godsmacked and never expected anything like that. they know its just me and ds 6 so wanted me to have something to open. ds has just come out of hospital so havent even been in this week which wasn't great for them. others have given wine. one lady didnt even wish me merry christmas.

i not sure if its because i am so skint all the time but i so much prefer the money to buy myself something i really need. hence the £50 coming at exact right time as zip is broke on my coat lol. i really hope im not sounding ungrateful its not meant to be.

dontwanttolooktight, I used to live just across the river from the Tower of London [intrigued]
If he's anywhere near Hays Galleria (by HMS Belfast) there's a Next there that he could get vouchers from.

cutekids · 20/12/2007 22:50

B;BOX....
I'M NO IDIOT ... BELIEVE ME!/...
not looking for a fight
just got a lot of fight in me
and Mumsnet is prob the only place I can get away with it,,,!

WendyWeber · 20/12/2007 22:51

MDS, tell that to all the Poles/Lithuanians/Filipinos/etc working godawful hours here for peanuts and sending most of their money home to their kids.

bananabox · 20/12/2007 22:52

Well maybe once you've read the OP properly, Cutekids, you can have a fight about the question the OP actually asked and not the one you thought she asked

noddyholder · 20/12/2007 22:52

I absolutely don't begrudge it

DontWantToLookTight · 20/12/2007 22:53

cutekids, what are you going on about?

OP posts:
Twinklemegan · 20/12/2007 22:54

No Monkeybird, more like licking arses and emptying the pockets of old ladies with no teeth.

And that is not intended as a swipe at you or your DH MDS, who I am sure works very hard and earns his money.

But IMO those tongue in cheek scenarios are rather more closely associated with earning the big money than those quoted by Monkeybird. Sad but true.

HunkerGotLeprosyFromAFact · 20/12/2007 22:57

Where on earth do you live that you can only get a 2-bed plus baby room maisonette on 125k, that's the main question on this thread! Live a little bit further out of town and have stairs of your own!

I loathe getting bath stuff, smellies, scented candles, etc for presents. But I have eczema, so there's A Reason.

LyraSilvertinsel · 20/12/2007 22:58

Ok, just seen he's at More London. Hays Galleria is about 5 minute walk in the direction of London Bridge. There's also a Boots if he want to get vouchers from there.

MummyDarlingSausage · 20/12/2007 22:58

Wendyweber, but that's my point. Not everyone (only a handful) could do my dh's job.

HunkerGotLeprosyFromAFact · 20/12/2007 22:59

Only I can be me.

Do I get proper compensation for that? Do I feck.

Mind you, some say it should be those around me who are compensated, but I ignore them.

WendyWeber · 20/12/2007 23:00

AOL has a page of properties for under £150K atm - most of them (as you'd expect) in places like Lincolnshire or Ramsbottom.

But they had one - just the one - in London; in Camberwell. A studio, ie one room with bed, sofa and table, above a shop - £135,000

And it was sold already

edam · 20/12/2007 23:00

'Without the bean counters and hedge fundy people there would be no money to pay for health workers and cleaners etc.'

Yeah, right. Because city types are like Rumpelstiltskin, they can spin straw into gold and conjure money out of thin air. Obviously.

It's bad enough that these types are taking their massive fuck-off salararies and bonuses out of my pension fund and endowment while leaving me with peanuts, they expect me to doff my sodding cap at the same time!
