Bumperlicious, big mortgage doesn't necessarily = big house. Our mortgage is over £200k (and we have a lot of equity) and it's a tiny two-bed Victorian semi with a downstairs bathroom. Depends where you live.

Ledodgy · 20/12/2007 22:08

Hmm Ponsettia or wine, Ponsettia or wine? Yes i'm right there with you Jan!

DontWantToLookTight · 20/12/2007 22:08

myjobismum, sorry you feel like crying. really didn't want to appear insensitive. I am very jealous of you being married to a [swoon] chef!!!

Yes, yes, ledodgy!

If only they'd asked me...

DontWantToLookTight · 20/12/2007 22:10

we're in a two bed (and a babies room)first and second floor flat/maisonette without garden access down some stair and downstairs neighbours who hate us

When I was a PA I would just have appreciated the thought. I have had generous and not so generous bosses and really I didn't give a thought to their salaries compared to gift given. I had tickets to Phantom of the Opera, a watch, perfume, large bouquet of roses and from others diddly squat. I preferred a good pay rise really

we give £100 each to our 4 employees

EricScrooge · 20/12/2007 22:12

Not surprised at the 125 figure - i know the stress and hours come with a salary like that - but 35 for a secretary?

That's very good.

Are you sure she is not more of a PA?

DontWantToLookTight · 20/12/2007 22:12

do you really think cash is OK though cod? Not in the least bit thoughtless?

Yeah - Cod is probably right - some money or shopping vouchers(if he can't bear to just hadn over a wad) probably would go down best.

True lyra, it's all relative. I think that's why threads like this get a bit sensitive, not because someone earns 125k, I accept that some people earn much more than I do (5 times as much!) but it's adding "but I'm not minted!" that I think upsets people.

It's great that some of your husbands/you make such a lot of money, but just be honest and say, "yep, it's a lot of money, he/I work bloody hard for it, but it's a fuck load of money"

myDHisinthesameboat · 20/12/2007 22:14

Eric DH is a lawyer and they don't have PAs, they are all called secretaries, and can earn a fair whack in the City, especially the more senior ones.

tbh when we first had a christmas as employers i said ' ok - they are really great for us - what would they really want'

cash is the best gift i think - they choose what they want

ArcticRoll · 20/12/2007 22:16

Agree with cod; scented candles are naff present.

DontWantToLookTight · 20/12/2007 22:17

yes, sorry, have apologised. t'was insensitive and stupid

DH a lawyer here too (and he does do the hours - a quiet week is 50 hours and can go up to 100 hours, doesn't see dd apart from weekends and then is often working from home so he does get financially compensated but it comes with a different sort of [price).

I don't think you can give cash. Vouchers a good idea - we have given theatre vouchers before.
