How much do you spend on your Christmas Day Turkey/Joint/Nut Roast?

Every year DHs friend brings us a bird. Apparently it's oraganic, has been raised in good conditions and I suspect it even had a name. I'm not even sure how this arrangement came about now, but it's happened for years and we have the same as our friends are having for Christmas Day, they just double their order. They don't tend to tell us what it is, and I have always presumed it's a turkey so the year we had goose was a surprise (it was cooked before I figured out it wasn't a turkey!) This year I've asked what it is, and asked DH how much it cost. Apparently it's a 10lb (organic) cockerel and cost £35.

I actually have no idea if this is normal or expensive Blush It sounded really expensive, but DH says he usually gives his friend about £40.

Most years I play the 'turkey gamble' which involves hovering around the supermarket on Xmas eve about 4pm, despite getting the rest of my Xmas shop delivered. The odds of the turkey gamble are good, every year there are shelves of reduced ones with huge amounts off. I could just get one full price and stay at home drinking sherry but it has become some sort of ridiculous family tradition!

Three bird roast here, it says it serves six but there will only be three of us. A tenner from Morrisons. A mate said he'd paid £60 for a turkey crown for five people.

Farm shop goose 6kg is £95
Farm shop Kelly Bronze Hollywood famous turkey 4kg £75

madmumofteens · 25/12/2021 12:28

I paid £47 for a stuffed crown from M&S it's definitely smaller and more expensive than last year 😱 I'm gonna get it elsewhere next year as disappointed 😔

AutumnAnn · 25/12/2021 13:17

£12

Sgtmajormummy · 25/12/2021 13:27

I got an Iceland frozen Bernard Matthews turkey (4kg, butter basted and with giblets) for our English Christmas dinner three weeks ago. £13.
And a large Guinea fowl roast of which we’ve eaten about half for €20 yesterday.

Thesearmsofmine · 25/12/2021 13:32

Turkey Crown from the butchers £15.

FeeFi100 · 25/12/2021 13:33

Organic Duchy chicken. About £14 for the three of us.

Roominmyhouse · 25/12/2021 13:43

I bought an organic taste the difference Turkey crown from sainsburys. It was £40 and says it feeds 6. I bought the same one was last year and it was delish so hoping this years will be as good!

Quornflakegirl · 25/12/2021 13:45

Was going to have pork joint £6.50 but put it in the freezer !

PickAChew · 25/12/2021 14:01

Wow! 10lb? That's one big cock!

And a great price, tbh. I 0aid £45 for a M&S free range turkey crown that I managed to overcook.

zukiecat · 25/12/2021 14:06

We don't like Turkey, so we have chicken breast fillets, only DD2 and me here so it costs about £5 for the chicken.

I would say our whole lunch comes to under £18.

stargirl1701 · 25/12/2021 14:11

We just have a crown on the bone which was £56. I would expect to pay £100 for the entire bird.

actiongirl1978 · 25/12/2021 14:18

I'm not sure exactly, but out butcher list was:
Game pie
3kg gammon
1.5kg fillet beef
20rashers bacon
Dog bones

£205

CaptainPovey · 25/12/2021 14:27

Whole beef fillet

Pork joint (which we cut in two)

Two lamb rumps

70 quid

Beef Short Ribs

Belly pork joint

4 lamb chump chops

32 quid

This will last a while as we cut a piece of fillet for beef welly today, some for stroganoff and some for steaks

We have chicken(s) plus plenty chicken/pork pieces in freezer

No meat shopping for a while she says

Bluntness100 · 25/12/2021 14:31

We have the markies three bird Roast, which is currently in the oven, cost 55£. It’s just over 2kg in weight and comes with stuffing inside and bacon on top.

VanillaAndOrange · 25/12/2021 16:05

DH bought a large chicken that cost £10. We like chicken better than turkey, but I've never been happier about that, because he said he saw turkeys or turkey crowns in the same shop, not much bigger than our chicken, costing up to £80!

Grimchmas · 25/12/2021 16:13

Small beef joint from local butcher, £18 - fed 2 of us plus enough for sandwiches tomorrow. My eyes watered a bit at the price.

Sub £10 for ingredients for 2 nut roast 2lb loaf tins.

BellaVida · 26/12/2021 14:06

Vegan no pork and cranberry Wellington- £4

WeAllHaveWings · 26/12/2021 14:13

Beef Fillet around £50. Ready in 30 mins + 15 min resting and it was bloody and gorgeous. We have had beef the last two years and dont think we'll got back to turkey again.

DillDanding · 26/12/2021 14:15

Our turkey was from M&S and cost £90.

insancerre · 26/12/2021 14:18

Organic free range turkey crown from Booths was £72

MrsPnut · 26/12/2021 14:22

We had 2kg piece of beef, a 2kg chicken, a 2kg piece of gammon and a medium pork pie from the butchers and I spent £60. The beef was almost £30 and it was delicious. We make sure we have plenty for leftovers and I will freeze some slices of beef in gravy for a January Sunday lunch.

I have just had a chicken, bread sauce, stuffing, parsnip and pigs in blanket sandwich and it was glorious.
