How much do you spend on your Christmas Day Turkey/Joint/Nut Roast?

Every year DHs friend brings us a bird. Apparently it's oraganic, has been raised in good conditions and I suspect it even had a name. I'm not even sure how this arrangement came about now, but it's happened for years and we have the same as our friends are having for Christmas Day, they just double their order. They don't tend to tell us what it is, and I have always presumed it's a turkey so the year we had goose was a surprise (it was cooked before I figured out it wasn't a turkey!) This year I've asked what it is, and asked DH how much it cost. Apparently it's a 10lb (organic) cockerel and cost £35.

I actually have no idea if this is normal or expensive Blush It sounded really expensive, but DH says he usually gives his friend about £40.

I've got an organic "free range" turkey (not sure if they were actually allowed outside this year because of bird flu) and it was £67. It is a lot but will feed us for several meals as a pp said.

ISpyCobraKai · 23/12/2021 21:18

£40 including delivery for my Chinese takeaway for one.
It'll last 20 years 3 days.

Fridafever · 23/12/2021 21:20

£85 for a 4.5 kg turkey. I’ve never bought a turkey before (and I’m in my 40s) so nothing to compare it to.

MrsBungle · 23/12/2021 21:24

Seems cheap. I’ve bought a free range Turkey from a local farm before and they started around £50. This year I’ve bought a medium sized free range chicken for a tenner and dh has a fake Turkey vegan joint thing from Asda for about a fiver.

Megan2018 · 23/12/2021 21:24

Depends if we are hosting - a turkey can be up to £100 if we have a crowd. We order a good one from the farm shop or Field and Flower.

This year we have a free range corn fed cockerel, it was only £20 but isn’t huge (3.5kg). There’s only DH and me and toddler DD though.

CovidCorvid · 23/12/2021 21:24

Chicken was £4.65.

I will make a nut roast myself, ingredients cost less than £5.

Supposed to be in France with my family for Christmas, but sadly stuck here, just spent £65 on a goose, enjoy your meal, we would be having Capon if we were in France.

Invisablewoman · 23/12/2021 21:29

We're hosting for 10 this year so we've got a free range Norfolk turkey crown on the bone from M&S - think it was £60 (feeds 10-12).

sparklefarts · 23/12/2021 21:31

Tesco finest 7kg (says it feeds 15) turkey for £56

Titsywoo · 23/12/2021 21:34

Not much. I bought a gammon for £12 and a chicken for £8. Not keen on turkey. Was going to feed 8 of us with the ham and chicken but now we have covid so will be feeding 4 of us with lots of leftovers!

HarrietSchulenberg · 23/12/2021 21:34

We usually have a plump, free range chicken or duck but this year we're having a small turkey crown which cost £13 from Sainsbury's. I don't really like turkey but we're taking it to MIL's and she does.
Next year we'll be back to duck or a fuck off big chicken.

Chishnfips · 23/12/2021 21:37

Joystir59 · 23/12/2021 21:39

Half leg of lamb £27 local organic meat

ginslinger · 23/12/2021 21:39

kelly bronze - £110 - will feed 11 of us on xmas day plus lots of left overs.

EatSleepRantRepeat · 23/12/2021 21:40

Beef topside for us, about £18 I think for a large one. I dont eat much meat and being able to serve it pink is a massive help for if things aren't quite timed correctly.

For the other days it's M&S Plant Kitchen sausages, and tofu stir-fry.

Hadalifeonce · 23/12/2021 21:43

12lb cockerel about £50.

BiddyPop · 23/12/2021 21:44

I have spent up to €65 on an organic free range turkey. But generally, we have a smaller sized one, organic is important but free range more so. And we are only 3 people.

This year, we got a boned breast which is organic but much smaller than a whole bird so €25.

Ragruggers · 23/12/2021 21:45

7-8

Treaclepie19 · 23/12/2021 22:01

Our veggie nut roast stacks were from cook. About £10 I think.
Before being veggie we'd have got a turkey crown.

Holbrook9 · 23/12/2021 22:02

We make a nut roast, total cost for nuts, sage, apricots then other bits we have in stock amounts to approx £6?

FrenchyQ · 23/12/2021 22:16

Locally reared free range turkey crown. Think it was about £70.

SmartCar · 23/12/2021 22:21
