Kids breakfast on Christmas day

Looking for inspiration really. I have 4 and 2 yo boys. Both going abit nuts for Christmas this year. Not quite sure what to do them for Christmas day breakfast though that's special but also not going to make them go loopy on sugar. I always have bacon and cream cheese bagel, DH has salmon. Neither of which my boys will eat with gusto. Any suggestions? Dont particularly want to be slaving away cooking on the big day

I was planning to do the same breakfast as usual (yoghurt/ cereal).

Croissants?

ineedsun · 06/12/2021 07:10

@Indecisivelurcher

And the actual pic!
Have made those a few times, they’re so easy and the kids (and adults) love them. You can just leave them on the side and they’ll go and help themselves.

Or do scotch pancakes, a bowl of strawberries, some maple syrup and creme fraiche - ours used to love that. A bit of a buffet type thing

updownroundandround · 06/12/2021 07:26

We always have huge warm croissants with bacon,( and when the kids were younger we'd buy a jar of marshmallow, jam and chocolate spread, so they could choose what to put in their croissant) and a fresh fruit salad.

UnLunDun · 06/12/2021 07:29

Mine have a weird Christmas concoction they created themselves and is now family law to have…Christmas Porridge (aka porridge with cinnamon, dried mixed fruit/citrus peel, topped with Sprinkles!!!!!!!) I cringe but love their excitement, even the teens bizarrely hahaha. Mum and Dad have homemade marmalade on warm sodabread.

Rosebel · 06/12/2021 07:53

My kids have bacon sandwiches now but when they were younger loved the tins of beans and sausage.
Not very exciting I know but they absolutely loved it as a treat Christmas day. Or failing that a selection box 🤣

VaguelyInteresting · 06/12/2021 07:54

Mine has pancakes. With chocolate. I know, I know, but... Christmas!

Redsquirrel5 · 06/12/2021 08:29

Pancakes, bacon and maple syrup here.
Coco pops and croissants was another choice for the kids. Coco pops were a birthday or Christmas treat.

We always get a great big pork pie, that people can cut wedges off and have with lots of Branston pickle. And buttery crumpets on the side. Definitely no sugar high there and less effort for the cooks than a proper breakfast.

@Createausernametoday

This is so MN
I totally agree Grin
Maybepossibly22 · 06/12/2021 08:35

DH and I always have fresh-baked rolls with sausage, egg & bacon - this is DD’s first Christmas where she is eating “proper” food (21 months) so she’s going to have scotch pancakes and banana with a bit of maple syrup (and probably pinch most of the egg out of my roll!)

languagelover96 · 06/12/2021 08:35

Scrambled eggs on toast

BeyondMyWits · 06/12/2021 09:04

Cinnamon rolls here. Start them cooking half an hour before I want people up. (DD19, DD21, and Mil with dementia who no longer knows what time things happen)

The smell is just Christmas...

InvisibleDragon · 06/12/2021 10:02

If you want to make the puff pastry Christmas tree but not fill it with Nutella, there are savoury options available too:
www.delscookingtwist.com/puff-pastry-christmas-tree-appetizer/

And extra fillings:
www.delscookingtwist.com/tarte-soleil-appetizer-5-ways/

Personally, I'd go for tomato sauce and cheese or spinach and ricotta - the recipe also suggests garlic butter, but I think it might soak into the pastry too much and be a bit disappointing and greasy.

tiutinkerbell · 06/12/2021 10:24

I used to get lovely thick mince pie flavoured porridge. Still love it on Christmas morning now!

sonicshoegazes · 06/12/2021 10:26

We have a box of posh biscuits!

QforCucumber · 06/12/2021 10:31

I am a sad person and make crepes with chopped strawberries as a santa hat, squirty cream for beard and hat trim, choc buttons for eyes!

Cherrytart23 · 06/12/2021 10:36

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads

Mine will probably have a chocolate orange and Pringles.
Mine Absolutely will have something like. After all it's Christmas 1 crap breakfast a year won't do any harm.

OP: what food can my kids eat that’s not sugary, or requires cooking?

Thread: cereal! Nutella! Jam! Nutella with jam! Porridge with chocolate! 😂

Bigoldhag · 06/12/2021 10:44

What about jus rol crossajnt/pain au chocolat? Could always do the first with cheese/ham if preferred?

Indecisivelurcher · 06/12/2021 10:55

Not sugary then, dippy egg with soldiers. Or omelette.

maudmadrigal · 06/12/2021 11:44

We have a brioche loaf (from ottolenghi book) with mixed berries and yoghurt. Everyone loves it and it just needs popping in the oven in the morning. (We used to have pancakes, but people felt it took us away from present opening for too long!)

We also have a massive fruit salad. DH and I have been doing that bit since pre-kids and it's really nice to get something fresh and healthy before all the real Christmas excess starts.

maudmadrigal · 06/12/2021 11:45

Love the santa hat crepes too (though no one here likes squirty cream, sadly).

Bananasareyellow · 06/12/2021 11:55

I quite like us all sitting down to breakfast but at that age I would have found that potentially an unnecessary stress on Christmas morning! If it was me I think I'd make a little extra for yourselves so if they're up for it they can join you but also buy one of those bags of brioches and a jar of chocolate spread so if they don't have much and won't sit still you can announce them as a special Christmas breakfast pudding.

helpfulperson · 06/12/2021 12:00

I love the idea of something completely different like pizza or pork pie.
