My never again list:
Mugs
Tea towels
Socks
Biscuits
Jam
Wine
Tea

Drawers and cupboards bursting with all of them!

What I would always love more of:
Knitwear, esp fair isle jumpers
Scented soap (it goes in drawers to deter moths if it's too pungent/floral for hand washing)

Definitely don’t need more leather gloves. I seem to always get them in the secret Santa.

I would love more of anything cashmere. Bed socks, scarves, hats, jumpers. I just love it. And very happy to receive nice food and drink gifts. Love it when my Christmas jam gifts get me through most of the year!

Postdatedpandemic · 28/11/2021 14:39

I'm afraid that I just know know you well enough to give a fair Isle jumper. But yay to smelly soap for all the same reasons.

Please don't give me body lotion, I am a fussy cow.

Wine and foodie consumables always welcome here.
Large decorative tat (tasteful or not) unwelcome, it just takes up space.

fallfallfall · 28/11/2021 14:40

Very similar!
No need for anything pottery.
Clothing n e v e r fits
Love hand crafted soaps

Rrrob · 28/11/2021 14:46

Interesting. I would love all of the stuff (except maybe tea towels) on your no list!
No thanks:
Cheap body lotion/ bath stuff/ candles
Gift sets from sainsburys/ boots (a glass, 2 chocs and a tiny bottle of prosecco type thing)

Yes please:
Nice choc
Posh soap/ hand cream/ candles (Jo Malone)
Socks
Something personalised/ handmade from my children
Books

SpookyScarySkeletons · 28/11/2021 14:49

No no to:

Moisturisers
Chocolates (seriously do family still not know I am diabetic! They just get given to the kids!)
"Diabetic chocolates" don't even go there.
Cheapo gift sets - yes SIL I'm looking at you and your annual lynx women sets
Rhubarb and ginger gin liquor. It is the drink of the devil. Just buy Bombay sapphire!

Yes yes to:
Anything cashmere
Pretty scarves with either cats or owls
Experience days with owls
Anything relating to cats
Proper gin
Thick woollen bed socks
Books
Fancy stationery

mamakoukla · 28/11/2021 14:52

No jewellery, perfume, clothing (unless it’s a very specific item), poor quality socks, mugs, knick knacks and ornaments and novelty items

Absolutely: nice bar soap is an essential luxury so happy to receive, most food, candles, Christmas tree decorations, good quality socks (synthetic rips my skin to shreds), books, time to have a coffee and cake together

ChaToilLeam · 28/11/2021 14:53

No thanks:
Mugs
Cheapo gift sets
Anything with an amusing slogan or inspirational meaning
Hand cream - I never use it
Tea - rarely drink it
Anything sentimental

Would love more of:
Nice shower gel
Posh chocolate
Posh soap
Alcohol, as long as nothing too sweet
Jewellery

ParishSpinster · 28/11/2021 14:56

No to:
Paintings or pictures or large photo canvas. No wall space.
Socks - I like a good and colourful pair of socks but I can't fit any more in the drawer.
Gloves- too many.

No more jokey or "funny" stocking fillers or novelty gifts.

I would like:
Good quality scented candle.

There isn't anything I really need or want to be honest. Just no more junk.

escapingthecity · 28/11/2021 14:56

@Rrrob totally with you on those gift sets. In ordinary times I put them into the church raffle!

OP posts:
Rrrob · 28/11/2021 14:58

@escapingthecity I get them from my nana every year….

Pancakeplant · 28/11/2021 14:59

No thanks:
Gift sets of "smellies" (how I hate that word). I am very particular about the fragrances I like (isn't everyone?!) and being given a load of cheap, horrible moisturiser/bubble bath/body lotion/candles is the worst. Seriously who actually likes receiving these?
Likewise, any tat gift sets in massive plastic packaging
Items of clothing with stuff written on it
Books. (I work in publishing. I read for a living, have way too many books and can get almost any newly published book for free. People still buy me books because they think "she likes books".)

Yes please:
Experience days with owls, as a PP said!
Knitted socks and gloves - for some reason I wear them out quickly
Nice pens
Useful eco-friendly homewares, eg beeswax wraps, wooden cleaning brushes

CoolShoeshine · 28/11/2021 15:04

No thanks to those giant tubs of Heroes, Quality Street, Roses etc. Ditto M&S £4 boxes of biscuits. We get bloody loads every year.

MrsBerthaRochester · 28/11/2021 15:09

I think Im easy to buy for, I love wine, choc, smellies, candles etc. I wouldnt appreciate socks, teatowels or anything crafty.

countdowntonap · 28/11/2021 15:10

Like:
Good quality skin care and make up
Champagne
Books linked to my interests
Gym wear

Dislike:
Hand or body cream
Shopping vouchers
Experience vouchers
Food including chocolate
House accessories e.g. pictures or ornaments

SockFluffInTheBath · 28/11/2021 15:13

Dislike:
Heavily scented body wash/lotion/hand cream (weird mild form of eczema).
Chocolate boxes as usually most of the chocs aren’t that nice.
Alcohol gifts with novelty glassware.

Likes:
Seeds, plants, gardening things.
Books or Waterstones vouchers.
A nice scarf.

Oh my god I have got old Grin

Pinkbrush · 28/11/2021 15:15

No more:
Candles (find them pointless)

More of:
Hand cream
Lip moisturisers
Bath stuff
Socks

escapingthecity · 28/11/2021 15:17

No more scarves for me either! But I would always like more gloves

OP posts:
RiverSkater · 28/11/2021 15:18

No:
Biscuits of any type
Fruit smelling anything
Thornton's - but I think they have gone?
Fizzy white wine
Jewellery - have loads, don't wear it

Yes to
Ferraro Roche
Sheepskin mittens
Cashmere anything
Proper triple milled soap but not fruity smelling
A wool scarf in my colours

theelephantinthegroup · 28/11/2021 15:20

We recently had a major declutter to move house, and I'm loving how much cupboard space I seem to have. So I really don't want any:

  • gift sets with one mug/glass etc
  • Christmas mugs
  • 'Art'/fridge magnets with motivational quotes on
  • gloves for small lady hands (nice big gloves welcome though!)
  • nail varnish sets
  • body lotion
  • bed socks (I always have VERY hot feet!)
or anything that is a version of something we already have but in red and with the word Christmas on

Always welcome are:

  • cheese and nice crackers
  • chocolates (incredibly unfussy about what sort)
  • big cosy gloves and scarfs
  • books

Unfortunately, MIL likes to buy everyone lots of 'little bits' to unwrap with her and is convinced that I like the same things as her. After nearly 20 years of DH trying to gently persuade her otherwise we have given up and just to a discrete charity shop run in January!

RosesAndHellebores · 28/11/2021 15:21

Knit your own tank top (yes, my mother once did that)
Le Creuset casserole (yes, DH once did that)

HelloDulling · 28/11/2021 15:22

Chocolates. I don’t like them, they clutter the kitchen or coffee table, and I chuck the ones the DCs don’t like.
And fancy gins. I adore a GnT, but not the flavoured ones that tend to appear at Christmas.

If I’m honest, I wish people would not buy me things. I’m particular (or fussy). I like nice candles, my hand cream, expensive jewellery, plain socks.

HaroldSteptoesHorse · 28/11/2021 15:25

Wish I’d get given more funky socks. I wear odd ones all the time but recently bought myself boring black ones

Plantstrees · 28/11/2021 15:25

I suffer allergies so don't want:
Wine
Chocolates
Flowers
Cheap toiletries
Candles or anything else smelly
Books - other people's choices rarely match my own

Would prefer more:
Socks
Jumpers
Scarves
Non-chocolate treats like fudge or biscuits
Waterstones voucher
Fancy pens or stationery

NothingAboutIt · 28/11/2021 15:27

I actually don't mind most things but hand and body lotion is useless to me as I never ever use it. It goes straight to the charity shop.

Onlinedilema · 28/11/2021 15:29

No to:
Cheap toiletries
Cheap perfume
Novelty gifts
Ornaments
Decorations
Alcohol (unless it's very specific as I only like a small amount of things)
Thin, decorative scarves
Cheap jewellery

Yes to:
Certain expensive perfumes
Warm winter scarves
Good fitting gloves
Slippers
Nice soaps
Nice body creams
Theatre vouchers
Afternoon tea vouchers
Nice warm good fitting hats.
