My never again list:
Mugs
Tea towels
Socks
Biscuits
Jam
Wine
Tea

Drawers and cupboards bursting with all of them!

What I would always love more of:
Knitwear, esp fair isle jumpers
Scented soap (it goes in drawers to deter moths if it's too pungent/floral for hand washing)

OP posts:

I actually don't mind getting the shower gel giftsets...handy for when it runs out. Never use the moisturiser though.

RestingStitchFace · 29/11/2021 13:39

Baylis and Harding type smellies sets. Especially big tubs of body lotion that seem to breed in my bathroom.
Mugs
Calendars (does anyone even use them anymore)
Anything with the word 'novelty' in the title.

RestingStitchFace · 29/11/2021 13:42

I would love,

Decent quality winter socks
Glossier lip balms
Books by Caitlin Moran
Green and Blacks Salted Caramel chocolate

clary · 29/11/2021 13:46

I've not read the whole thread but even from the first 30 or so posts it's clear tastes are so different.

Many of you would like a scarf, for example - I don't wear them except for a woolly scarf on a cold day and I have a few of those.

Never:
Mugs
Crap skincare or makeup (but no one wants that)
Gloves - rarely wear them and have some
Stationery - sorry, I love it in theory but in practice I just don't need notebooks and I only use one type of pen
Any tat or ornamental type items - I was given a ghastly silvery clock at work a few weeks ago (a thank you to NHS colleagues who...er well not sure why really) and it went straight in the charity bag
Those letters spelling LOVE or plaques saying Prosecco drunk here

Yes please:
Silver jewellery especially nice earrings
Nice small bowls to put earrings in
Lovely expensive skincare and make up
Books - anything you think I might enjoy
bath stuff YES I use it up, bubble bars from lush or any bubble bath pleasssee
Socks which I wear every day for running and which wear out
Any food or drink
Clothing for yoga or running
Running shoes oh pleaaaasee (let me choose them tho)
Any vouchers really

I recently left work and they clearly had listened to my moaning about crap gifts from my family (DH once bought me car mats) as they got me a 12-day sock calendar, lovely silver earstuds, big box of black Bic Biros, Costa voucher, chocolates, flowers. The only miss was a notebook which, while lovely, i doubt I will use. But otherwise, good job. And not a "you'll be missed" mug in sight. (hahaha maybe I won't be missed Grin)

ipswichwitch · 29/11/2021 17:40

Damn it, now I want an owl experience!

RamonaBadwolf · 29/11/2021 22:14

-Pjs a size bigger than regular clothes for extra comfort

  • bamboo socks
  • a weighted blanket
-anything garden related -tattoo studio voucher -voucher for a mani/pedi at local salon
  • a Himalayan salt lamp
-Gym kit
lorn195 · 30/11/2021 06:11

@RestingStitchFace yes, my pils use a Calendar. Unfortunately it's that time of year that everyone will get one for Christmas despite us using our phones.

Welcometothejingles · 30/11/2021 06:20

Skin allergy here so nothing highly scented but I donate them all to the hygiene bank in my local boots or the Foodbank. So at least it doesn't go to landfill, same with the 5000 boxes of treats.

ExcessiveIyDisorganised · 30/11/2021 06:26

I still quite like a calendar even though we've been using our phones for years, we still have one in the hall and I have one in my office at work, I like having a new picture to look at every month. I usually have either the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year one or one of local pictures.

User5489205347 · 30/11/2021 06:29

I would rather just have food gifts, anything else I would rather buy myself when I need or want it

user1497787065 · 30/11/2021 06:32

I have just arranged with friends that we no longer buy presents for one another. None of us need more 'stuff'. I have also told my adult children please do not buy presents for me. I don't need or want anything.
My DH and I stopped buying presents for one another years ago. When I read some of the MN posts on Christmas Day about awful presents from DHs I feel that we definitely made the right decision.

User5489205347 · 30/11/2021 06:37

DS knows to buy me some Leonidas chocolates😁, DH and I don't buy each other gifts

User5489205347 · 30/11/2021 06:38

My happy smile has turned into a grimace for some reason

Imissmoominmama · 30/11/2021 06:44

Please don’t buy me chocolate or wine, unless you know me really well and know my taste.
No gloves, hats, scarves- I have the ones I need.
No smelly gift sets, or candles unless they’re the ones you know I use.

I’d be really happy with vouchers for Alpkit, Icebreaker, BAM or a record store though.

SpeckledyHen · 30/11/2021 06:52

No thank you

Diary or calendar (MIL please note)
Body lotion sets
Mugs
Thornton chocolates
Anything pink, including plants

Yes please

Bendicks Bittermints
Book token
JL gift card
Any of the perfumes on my shelf
Hand cream

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 30/11/2021 06:59

Please don't give me anything like body butter or body lotion. I csnt be bothered to put it on there is too much of me to cover.
Also toners and the like. I'm a wash in soap and go person.
I like Egyptian glass, Bristol blue glass, crystals, fossils, wax melts, candles, incense.

Honeymint · 30/11/2021 07:02

Please know that I’m happy just to get a gift, but if I had to choose:

Lotions, make up, bath bombs etc (they look and smell so nice but I have terrible psoriasis and can’t use most of them)
Home decor
(I feel too guilty not to display it even if I don’t really like it)
Dark chocolate
(It’s often so expensive but I can’t stand the taste so it’s wasted on me!)
Clothes
(My sister keeps getting me weird clothes that don’t suit me and have bolshie slogans on.)

I do think it’s the thought that counts though, so whereas I’d be disappointed to get those from a family member who should know me better, if I got any of those things from a work secret Santa I’d be happy enough. (Don’t get me wrong I’d regift it or give it away but I’d be pleased with the effort!)

AuntieMarys · 30/11/2021 07:10

I'm 61 and don't want the usual MN offering of a bird feeder, scarf, garden stuff, shot synthetic candles or "posh" anything.
Ditto nasty flavoured gin ( just buy me proper gin!).
I would like a cheese subscription, Neom diffuser, a book of my choice and V and A membership.

TheClockTicker · 30/11/2021 07:13

No to : tat, plastic novelty things and 'fun' gifts
Chocolate, I don't like it!
Ornaments.
Any clutter
Most food items
Tacky garden stuff

Yes to
Clothes of any sort!
Alcohol
Books (provided they're to my taste)
I have a wishlist for a reason!

Kippersfortea · 30/11/2021 07:25

Like: Pot plants, toiletries, books, candles.

Dislike: Cut flowers, clothes (never fit), scarves (got too many).

GoldenBlue · 30/11/2021 07:30

labazslovesliving · 30/11/2021 08:23

no cheap toiletry gifts sets; the chemicals in them set my sensitive skin on fire, never found a use for those scrubby things useless but if you must buy me a toiletry set please buy me Dove pro age

always like good quality hand cream or face cream working outside all the time skin gets sore and chapped at times

no tat ornaments etc but sentimental items from kids and grandkids ok except they make me cry!

no chocolates trying to lose weight and there is enough temptation as it is

no alcohol neither of us drink so waste of time

really all i would like is your time and company

AuntieMarys · 30/11/2021 09:21
