Normal songs songs that still sound festive / Make you feel Christmassy? Or Christmas songs not often played

I saw a thread on Reddit about normal songs that are unintentally Christmassy. I thought it was an interesting idea for a thread.

At the moment I am making a massive playlist on Alexa, for the Christmas period. I am on the look out for lots of song suggestions, as I don't want to overplay my favourite Christmas songs.

Less well known Christmas songs I have discovered in last few days are....

Yelling at the Christmas Tree by Billy Idol
Seasons Greetings by Cassie DeSilva

Years ago , Chris Evans used to play Chris Rea "Girl In a Sports Car" and say it was Christmassey .......there's no mention of Christmas in the song , but it does sound festive Xmas Grin

I like River by Joni Mitchell, it does mention Christmas but is lovely and melancholy.

Also White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes. Wintery rather than Christmas.

NeonIcedcoffee · 04/12/2020 19:05

Tracy Thon had a great Christmas album a few years ago called tinsel and lights. A lot of the songs are really mellow, especially compared to other Christmas songs!

Thank everyone

Bizarrely, So Long and I Do, both by ABBA. Think I discovered them around Christmas one year when I was little and they still have Christmassy vibes, even now.

TheAnswerIsCake · 05/12/2020 17:55

That Spirit if Christmas by Ray Charles is one I don’t hear much (and as I listen to Heart Xmas all day at work - I hear a lot!)

I also like Christmas Through Your Eyes by Gloria Estefan (not the same as the Lady A song). It’s really cheesy and 80s tasting, but I think it’s the nostalgia I like - might not like it if I hadn’t heard it when I was young, iykwim!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/12/2020 17:59

Freiheit "Keeping the Dream Alive" is always Christmassy for me.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/12/2020 18:01

RhinestoneCowgirl totally agree re River and White Winter Hymnal.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/12/2020 18:04

Oh, and for one that's not played enough, I like "Merry Christmas from the Family" by Robert Earl Keen.

Smile Thanks, everybody.

Bob Dylan's Must Be Santa Claus. Only discovered it last year when Alexa randomly played it

Smoothyloopy · 07/12/2020 21:54

Steve Earl, Nothing But A Child. Beautiful song

lemonandthyme · 07/12/2020 21:56

Seasonal rather than festive but I love ‘winter winds’ by Mumford & Sons

NotmyfirstRodeomyfriend · 07/12/2020 22:03

Water under the bridge by Adele always makes me feel festive, the ending particularly.

sueelleker · 08/12/2020 10:39

"Winters Tale" by David Essex. Seasonal, but it pops up in Christmas collections.

TheRealJeanLouise · 08/12/2020 10:42

2000 miles by The Pretenders. I don’t know why it feels so Christmassy but it does. I mean, it does mention Christmas and it is played at Christmas but it just feels sort of alternative to me...
Christmas Lights by Coldplay also.
Light the Night by Andy Burrows that was in The Snowman and the Snowdog.
But I’m with PPs too. River is my favourite.

tisonlymeagain · 08/12/2020 11:04

Love of the Common People by Paul Young, and Pipe of Peace by MPaul McCartney always feel Christmasy to me!

35andThriving · 08/12/2020 13:47

Thanks a lot. Think I'll add a few of these to my Christmas playlist to give it a bit of variety.

Skinny Lister - Six Whiskies
Always seems like it should be played at Christmas to me!

rooarsome · 08/12/2020 14:34

One that's barely played but is my fave- A Spaceman Came Travelling

35andThriving · 08/12/2020 20:06

Love Six Whiskies in. Hadn't heard that one before. Also love A Spaceman Came Travelling and Love of the Common People.

Just in case anyone's intersted I discovered a song called Graveyard of the Outcast Dead by Frank Turner. I think it is a very sad but beautiful song. Smile

Thanks to everyone so far. I have really enjoyed this thread.

I came on to say "Keeping the dream alive"

Also the Frog Chorus by Paul McCartney - is that just me??

AnnnaBananna · 08/12/2020 20:26

Where Are You Christmas and A Cradle in Bethlehem are ones I don’t hear very often. I also hear Hallelujah on a lot of a Christmas albums.

EllieQ · 08/12/2020 20:26

‘That’ll be Christmas’ by Thea Gilmore - a Christmas song, but not well-known. It’s from her Christmas album. Kate Rusby also has a Christmas album with some unusual folk songs.
