How much have you spent on Advent Calendars?

As a child we just had a picture advent calendar to share. Not even a chocolate one.
I have been looking at the threads where you all share what your advent calendar reveals on the day, and feel like I’m missing out.
So I thought I’d treat my self to one (better late than never) but I am shocked by the price of some of them £80! And it may not even contain much that you’d use. And some of you have bought two or three for other family members.
So go on, shock me some more with how much you have spent this year.

£16.99 x 2
Whatever the chocolate ones are x 2

Equimum · 04/12/2020 07:32

About £5. I made reusable ones when our boys were babies. Each year I buy a big bag of chocolate coins and a pack of shaped chocolates to put on in each day.

pinkyboots1 · 04/12/2020 07:40

We've done advent boxes this year.. each one hold a gift for each child (15 & 20) some are little chocolates from Aldi, some are slightly more expensive but non more than £4 each and lots of the gifts are toiletry samples etc.

I forgot so have ordered three Lindt ones at half price for £20. My top tip - fortnum and mason reduce theirs a few days before so you can usually grab a bargain. Obviously a different price point to ones in the supermarket but they are lovely

WitchesSpelleas · 04/12/2020 07:45

£0

ivfbeenbusy · 04/12/2020 07:46

I bought a wooden one from hobby craft years ago and painted it in christmas colours etc - costs a couple of pounds to fill up with chocolate coins and that's it

As always these things are as expensive as you want them to be

lazylinguist · 04/12/2020 08:07

My dc both have Celebrations advent calendars which MIL sent them. So far 3 out of four of the chocolates have been Bounty! Neither dc likes them.

ouchmyfeet · 04/12/2020 08:08

Just the cost of a box of celebrations to fill 2 reusable calendars that we've had for years. Nicer and better value

Lancelottie · 04/12/2020 08:14

Our bunch are all student-age. In a massively grown up way, they have one filled with Lego bits, one with wooden toys (mostly cats) and one with a cardboard model village (all reusable).

I might swap out today’s cat for a note saying ‘make snowballs’ and look prescient.

@Aroundtheworldin80moves would you mind sharing where you got your mystery calendar?

Dinosauraddict · 04/12/2020 08:23

£100 for 4. This includes a mini Christmas book one for the baby which we'll re-read for the next few years, a boots Disney sock one for DM as she is so supportive of us throughout the year, a 'fun' one for my husband, and then an an advent candle for me. My advent candle is a charity one and money is split between 24 charities, so each day you can see who you are helping. I love that idea.

NaughtipussMaximus · 04/12/2020 09:21

Mine seem really frugal! DH and I share a posh card one (Angela Harding this year, £8, though actually I bought three over the last few months because I kept seeing one I liked more - so probably £25 total but will last is for the next two years too) and DS has a Lego one - £23. He also has an wooden advent truck we bought when he was tiny - we used to put little gifts and toys or balloons etc in each day (and sometimes it was a real challenge finding small enough things!) but now he has a Lego advent calendar, I just put chocolates in the truck.

reluctantbrit · 04/12/2020 09:27

Depends. This year more as I have a wine one, DH a beer and DD a bath/beauty one.

Last year we shared a Bonne Maman jam one plus a shared chocolate.

Other years we just have a Lindt one each.

There has to be at least some chocolate involved.

I am not keen on most beauty ones as I find most products don’t do anything for me and I hate candles.

lockitdown · 04/12/2020 09:39

90p for 2

Chimeraforce · 04/12/2020 09:45

The most ever this year as it's been a bit short on joy.
£10 Ferrero rocher for my DD (normally gets Pound land) she loves it ❤️
£2 maltesers for me (normally get nothing).

johnsontvc · 04/12/2020 11:22

Good post, a lot of stuff in here i did not know about

AliceMck · 04/12/2020 11:35

89p x 4 for chocolate ones, had to buy a 4th after 3yo found and ate hers early.

Approx £65 in total on HP lego, peppa pig & a beauty one for DCs. We don’t always get these ones but seeing we won’t be paying for any other Christmas activities this year we decided to get them.

Chocolatechocolatechocolate · 04/12/2020 11:41

Probably about £80 all in - a peppa pig book one for our little boy and I made a wine advent calendar for my Sister and an ale one for my Dad. I often find it works out cheaper making them than buying them ready made.

Franticbutterfly · 04/12/2020 11:44

£240

SockDrawer · 04/12/2020 11:57

Love the idea of a reusable Christmas book advent calendar.

I never buy them for myself but this year feels like it needs extra treats so I got a fancy handmade chocolate one from a local chocolatier for £25. It’s like eating a pound coin every day but I’m really enjoying it. (And I feel a little bit good for helping to support an independent business 😇.)

OhMsBeliever · 04/12/2020 12:00

£3 on an advent candle. I've got 5 kids, and never really done advent calendars, apart from getting a picture one every now and then. We always have a candle though. I got this years one from a local bee keeper.
