Really is this happening? I’ve seen a friend asking for recommendations on fb that’s the second in as many days.

This photo was shared in my local fb group (naice little village) in an advertisement for this service. Any questions about price were met with 'inbox me hun x' so I'm guessing it's expensive. Someone asked how long these displays last and was told 'a few weeks' but it's balloons! Surely by Christmas Day you'd be left with an array of shrivelled balls in various stages of deflation.

Anyway it's not to my taste. I dread to think of the effect on the environment this sort of disposable tat has, it's all going to end up in landfill come January. And bows on doors are the worst, as are big bows on babies' heads.

Fuck me that balloon arch situation is hilariously ugly

Nonamesavail · 26/11/2020 14:22

SendHelp30 · 26/11/2020 15:44

Get the feeling we might be seeing a lot more door arches this year...

I buy the biggest, spikiest hollyiest bastard of a wreath I can find. No one ever tries to steal it. I figure if they did the screams of pain would alert me in time to go and stop them.

TrickyD · 29/11/2020 18:20

They remind me of those horrible headbands with bows that are put on bald babies’ heads.
Probably by the same people.

Put on a big Georgian door (I.e. 10 downing street) - Lovely.

Put on a standard PVC (usually white, red or blue) - Tat.

I would never do this (I'm a total humbug when it comes to Christmas), but I can't help wondering how much of a faff it is to take it all down afterwards - and how much rubbish is generated, since I imagine you couldn't possibly use the same year after year (or does it all just get shoved in a box in the loft for next Christmas?)

RedtreesRedtrees · 29/11/2020 19:04

This is so spectacularly tone deaf. People spending thousands to ‘dress their front door’ whilst we collectively leave thousands of people behind in joblessness, poverty and desperation.

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 29/11/2020 19:17

I think when shops and (probably) celebs have it some they probably go to the companies whose business is to decorate big shopping centres and things. There’s a Christmas decorating business near my work, who do the big shopping centres and local hotels and things. Which is fine, looks spectacular etc. But on a 1960’s semi it just looks silly.

Longbarn5 · 29/11/2020 19:57

I think a bit part of Christmas is putting up the decorations. Having some Christmas music on and opening all the boxes, etc. I wouldn't want some interior Christmas designer taking that away from me. I also like wreaths on doors not great big bows. We have a few round here but I'm not impressed. They are not traditional and bluntly a bit tacky in my view. They dont make me think of Christmas either. Maybe for birthday or even a Wedding but not for Christmas!
