Really is this happening? I’ve seen a friend asking for recommendations on fb that’s the second in as many days.

Why is mumsnet always so down on anything that might make people a little bit happy?

^^ it's why I'm here! nowhere else can I share my disdain for sweet boxes and Pandora jewellery quite so vehemently

NiceGerbil · 24/11/2020 15:15

I think with so many people out of work etc bunging someone local (prob a woman? Who have been hit harder) is no bad thing.

In general I fall into the, if it makes them happy then so what type camp.

MoreDrunkThanBlessed · 24/11/2020 15:16

I regularly walk past a house that recently had a door bow put on. I walked past a day or two later and their main gate had a new bow. A few days later still and their side gate also sports a bow! I can’t tell if they’re bow obsessed or they are advertising their bow business (although they are in a side street so not much passing traffic).

Bluntness100 · 24/11/2020 15:24

Meh,I wouldn’t do it myself, but I think each to their own, I like seeing others decorations, be it foil decorations, over the top door stuff or something paired down and tasteful.

kleew1 · 24/11/2020 15:41

@GuiltyDoorBow

You are brave...

Fwiw each to their own and why not decorate your door?! Excusing the poor postie... And any decorations being stolen.

I wouldn't do it but i have a tacky wreath to go on mine made with my little girl in mind.

Come at me Grinch's...

LimeLemonOrange · 24/11/2020 19:35

Those photos all look like the people live in a shop or a catalogue.

cookiemonster5 · 24/11/2020 21:22

Funnily enough this just popped up on my fb. Babies first Christmas is a new one even for here!

Another 2 examples. The lights in the bow are new too.

The bows are hideous looking, sorry. Thought the door arches were a sleb thing, don't know anyone IRL who does them. Most 'normal' people spend their money buying their kids presents surely, who would piss £300+ on decorating a door?

Chailatte20 · 24/11/2020 23:30

In my area, if your wreath isn't nailed to the front door and has a wire connecting it to the mains socket then it'll be gone within an hour of you putting it up.

NiceGerbil · 25/11/2020 01:58

But really. Agree with those who say. So your thing.

I can't imagine living in a place where if it's not nailed down it's gone though Grin

NiceGerbil · 25/11/2020 02:06

I still think with loads of people especially women out of work

With Corona. Bunging a few quid to a local person to do something like that seems like a good thing to do tbh if you can afford it and like all that

I never understand the snottiness. Probably because my parents are just. Awful judgemental snobs.

It seems to me a totally harmless thing which maybe gives some income to people who need it. What exactly is the problem?

sergeilavrov · 25/11/2020 05:30

We pay a small business to do our Christmas decorations every year- just interior. I always want the same, relatively low key, elegant and traditional tree with little else. Every bloody year they try and convince me I want a full John Lewis display, or bold colours and an electricity bill to bankrupt the Queen. The annual email debate to reign them in is how I know Christmas is coming!

FlamingGoat · 25/11/2020 05:48

I'm a florist and can confirm that this has been going on for a few years now. It started when London shops around Mayfair and central London began decorating the outside of their doors and frontage with OTT floral displays around the time of the Chelsea Flower show, which segued into Christmas displays. To be fair, it looks amazing when done properly. On a UPVC front door done with Poundland baubles, not so much.

I took photos of the Carlton Jumeriah’s Christmas display for inspiration. Definitely agree the Chelsea shops look fun and festive. I’ve got my evergreen boughs harvested but will not be decorating before Dec1.

Saz12 · 25/11/2020 19:44

Some seem gratuitously wasteful (of money and resources). The £200 of floristry in a country where we have food banks, at the time of year when we’re meant to be thinking of others. Very hard to see how someone can’t think of anything better to spend money on (eg charity!). It’s the ostentatious consumption I have issue with.

Well loved decorations that have lasted / will last years? Stuff cut from your own garden? A more modest display? Great.

I’ve a feeling I’m becoming puritanical in my old age!

Bubblemonkey · 25/11/2020 20:03

Door bows like tacky as fuck imo. Got up this morning & spotted one over the room from my house. Got the boyfriend to come inspect its tackiness with me.

StephenBelafonte · 25/11/2020 20:23

I love all this, i'd be happy to pay someone to do this but no-one in my area does it.

TheRubyRedshoes · 25/11/2020 20:23

AnnabelsShock

Perhaps these people who have 300 spare to treat their door... Also give to charity?

Pipandmum · 25/11/2020 20:39

Goodness. In the 70s there was a house which had their front door wrapped like a Christmas present - it looked fabulous (I think they had a separate mail box).
As for paying for someone to decorate- have you never seen Mr Christmas on tv? He does house Christmas makeovers. I was paid to decorate an elderly friend of my mother's tree about two decades ago. It's a thing, and @Saz12 it's a business, meaning someone is getting paid and goods are being bought. Much better that people that can afford to spend the money and spread the wealth.

Ellieboolou33 · 25/11/2020 20:51

🤣🤣🤣 I actually quite like that as it would piss my Hinchy type neighbour off, all white lights, white door bow, white blinds, front door and white gravel.
Lessofallthisunpleasantness · 25/11/2020 20:59

The shops round here do the big door decorations. It looks lovely on a High Street.

I am loving the idea of making your front door look like a big present! I might try and do that in a crappy DIY fashion........

Summerstorms · 26/11/2020 08:24

who would piss £300+ on decorating a door?

No one round here, it costs them twenty pounds.

Ughmaybenot · 26/11/2020 08:37

I absolutely think it looks hideously tacky and I will be sticking with my normal sized natural wreath, the likes of which we have every year, but I also agree with a lot of pp saying that people making a bit of money any way they can this year can be no bad thing seeing as it’s hurting no one. And some people clearly like it 😬
