Do you think Chirstmas is going to be cancelled this year due to coronavirus?

OP posts:
tiredanddangerous · 21/05/2020 08:41

Christmas won’t be cancelled. I would have thought there’ll still be social distancing measures in place though so goodness knows what the shops will be like!

AJPTaylor · 21/05/2020 08:57

Hopefully it will cut down on the mn threads complaining about elderly relatives.

NoMoreTwistNoMoreTwist · 21/05/2020 09:09

Holidays at Christmas? Probably.
Santas grottos, church services etc? Likely.
The exchanging of presents? No.

Streamingbannersofdawn · 21/05/2020 09:15

I won't be able to host anyone.

I won't be able to do the endless travelling and visiting.

I will need to order everything on line and get it all delivered.

I'll only need to wrap our presents.

Yeah...sounds awful Wink

ITonyah · 21/05/2020 09:24

Streamingbannersofdawn Grin agree

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 21/05/2020 09:46

Actually I hope there will be a cancellation. We have been under attack by teeny Christmas baubles since January and I'm fed up with it.

Father Christmas and the elves are magical beings and therefore do not succumb to the same maladies as mere humans. Therefore no chronic diseases despite the unhealthy lifestyle and most certainly will not get COVID-19. If you consider the changes in time needed to deliver all the presents to all the households he is there for an infinitesimally small fraction of a second and therefore would not be able to contract the virus. He's also fully suited up with his own impermeable suit and gloves and his beard catches all virus particles preventing them from being breathed in. Once he gets back to the North Pole his suit is washed and he showers washing away virus particles from his beard.
Otherwise how else do you think he survived earlier pandemics and annual viruses?

sashh · 21/05/2020 10:49

What ever you do or don't do the day will arrive.

I don't celebrate Xmas and I like having a day no one bothers me.

There was a thread on the day for people who were alone so MN will be here even if Aunty Ethel can't make it.

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 21/05/2020 11:05

I was talking to a priest friend about this the other day. Collective singing is one of the most efficient ways to spread the virus because of the distance that aerosolised droplets spread, so although places of worship may hopefully be able to re-open in some form soon collective worship is going to look very different for a good while. No carol singing in the traditional social sense this Christmas Sad

Windyatthebeach · 21/05/2020 11:20

Just send a face mask along with your dc's Santa letter.
All good.
Seriously, will be a frugal Christmas this year. And more of a celebration of us all making it through - if we do.

SodaSloth · 21/05/2020 11:29

Deliveries... Cancel Xmas 😂😂😂

RedskyAtnight · 21/05/2020 11:34

I mean I guess you could argue Father Christmas is a super spreader, what with making so many house calls

So now we know the real reason that children have to be in bed before he comes. It's so he can ensure proper social distancing takes place.

MLMsuperfan · 21/05/2020 13:32

I expect the government to announce that celebrating Christmas is optional this year.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 21/05/2020 13:35

How depressing people are thinking about Christmas in May. Must be a record

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 21/05/2020 13:38

You must be new to Mumsnet, NoMorePoliticsPlease. 😁 January isn’t even over before next Christmas is being discussed. I believe there’s even a section on Mumsnet dedicated to Christmas.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 21/05/2020 13:47

Yes, Christmas will be cancelled.

But don't worry.

It will be replaced by C_hristma_s.

AJPTaylor · 21/05/2020 14:34

Rebook it for next year I reckon.

Holothane · 21/05/2020 14:51

No he’s not controlling believe me if he tried to control me he’d get a mouthful, no we were discussing church services and I just asked as we’re home if not in church, as I want to make a service of it and Stuff.

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 21/05/2020 14:55

We are booked to go away (UK) with ILs and will be devastated if that doesn't happen. Am not fussed about shipping, elaborate meals, santa visits etc. Just want to be able to get family together in a cottage with some nice decorations, tasty food and a few well thought out gifts.

GarlicSoup · 21/05/2020 14:57

@OutwiththeOutCrowd

Genius Grin

Gimmecaffeine · 21/05/2020 15:02

The Christian event cannot be cancelled by anybody.

The Christisns had a bloody good go at cancelling Yule though Grin but even overlapping their summer born god's birthday with 25/12 didn't cut it.

I think office parties might be out, but otherwise I'd say Christmas is the perfect lockdown holiday.

Cherryrainbow · 21/05/2020 15:13

All we have to buy is food and a few bits from Amazon, bish bash bosh and done.

Xmas tree and decs can be brought down from attic, got wrapping paper and stuff in the sales in cupboard. Netflix will sort out xmas movies for kids.

shookbelves · 21/05/2020 15:17

How very odd - the OP doesn't appear to have come back to the thread.

CelestialSpanking · 21/05/2020 19:03

As long as Santa Claus doesn’t get furloughed Christmas will go ahead- it might just be different from the usual way of doing things. Might even work out quite well for some people- avoid seeing certain relatives they’d be happy not to see 🤔

Windyatthebeach · 21/05/2020 21:39

Hopefully the elves are registered self employed. They can apply for a grant.
And double check with the elf and safety about starting back with a 2 m social distancing plan..
