Do you think Chirstmas is going to be cancelled this year due to coronavirus?

OP posts:
TokyoSushi · 20/05/2020 23:39

Well it's pretty impossible to actually cancel it, but it might be different than usual.

It would probably be wise to plan and start shopping etc earlier than you otherwise might.

Samtsirch · 20/05/2020 23:40

It depends on what Christmas means to you I suppose.
@Wauden
That did make me laugh 😆

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 20/05/2020 23:42

Oh fgs. What a stupid thread.

Christmas itself won't be canceled, how ridiculous

Holidays. AT Christmas? Maybe.

Ffs. I'm so done with bullshit like this. Pack it in.

DamnYankee · 20/05/2020 23:42

Are you serious?

If the Grinch couldn't keep Christmas from coming, then nobody/nothing can Smile

LilacTree1 · 20/05/2020 23:43

Blossom “ Were Easter or Ramadan cancelled in the middle of lockdown? ”

Um....yes.

Samtsirch · 20/05/2020 23:44

@Daffodil101
YES because the public conveniences are closed.
Now can we please get back to the baby Jesus.
😁

LilacTree1 · 20/05/2020 23:44

To be clear I do think Christmas will happen

But Easter mostly certainly didn’t, not any version of public celebration.

LilacTree1 · 20/05/2020 23:46

AgelikeWine

“ I really, really hope so. That would be the only good thing to come out of this appalling situation.”

This did really make me laugh. The only say I’d actually want a “stay at home” order! Imagine the peace!

LilacTree1 · 20/05/2020 23:46

*day

Samtsirch · 20/05/2020 23:47

@LilacTree1
No they absolutely were not
They were observed and celebrated at home .

freddiethegreat · 20/05/2020 23:48

@LilacTree1 - I guess it depends what you consider Easter to be. In my world Easter involves a church service, a nice dinner & chocolate eggs. All that happened, albeit in slightly different form.

Wauden · 20/05/2020 23:51

@Samtsirch Grin Halo Let's get back to the baby Jesus. Brilliant. Halo
And there's an excuse to use the halo emoji! Halo

Samtsirch · 20/05/2020 23:52

@LilacTree1
Easter was celebrated, does it have to be a public celebration to be meaningful or to have actually existed ?
I may have misunderstood you, apologies if this is the case.😊

LilacTree1 · 20/05/2020 23:55

This is going to sound odd

I’m not religious but help out at church

The local vicar helped me when dad was dying

So Easter should have been about people, even just doing teas and coffees and helping the caretaker and vicar’s wife with stuff.

So AFAIC it didn’t happen.

LilacTree1 · 20/05/2020 23:56

Re public celebration

Most of the congregation are elderly and the fact that there was no church service was very upsetting for them.

CustardySergeant · 20/05/2020 23:56

Well, as I'm an atheist all Christmas means to me is that it's the time our daughter comes home for a few days. She's 29 and lives about 30 miles away. I've certainly wondered whether we will be seeing her at Christmas (and we haven't seen her since last Christmas). Sad

failedasaparent · 20/05/2020 23:57

Might as well be. The virus has already fucked up five important events for my family.

Nicknacky · 20/05/2020 23:57

LilacTree1 Ramadan wasn’t cancelled, why would you think it was?

crustycrab · 20/05/2020 23:57

Ffs. Easter happened Confused

You don't have to have a cup of tea at church to celebrate Easter.

Ffswtf · 20/05/2020 23:57

Has Santa been furloughed too?

MadameMeursault · 20/05/2020 23:57

@Holothane why do you have to ask your husband's permission to have advent candles? Is he that controlling? LTB

Gingerkittykat · 20/05/2020 23:58

I was planning on going on holiday to escape the extended family Christmas, maybe I won't have to do that now!

I'm also overjoyed at the thought of having a great excuse to avoid the work night out.

FortunesFave · 20/05/2020 23:58

Nobody can 'cancel Christmas'. It's just...there.

The way in which it's celebrated might be a bit different but there's no harm in that.

Some of the best Christmas memories I have are not of massive gifts and loads of food but of those magical moments that you can't pay for.

Sitting in primary school in the 70s, looking at the massive tree in the hall as we had assembly.
Making cards with glitter ( a luxury I didn't have at home)
Seeing sheets of wrapping paper in the newsagents and having the money to buy some for the gifts I'd bought.

As an adult....walking to the post box with my small children in the frost to post a letter to Father Christmas.

Seeing the Round Table's Christmas float with music and lights one dark night and waking DD up to look out of the window at Father Christmas waving at all the houses.

Singing carols with my children and decorating leaves with glitter.

So many wonderful things to do that don't involve food, drink or big gatherings.

Inkpaperstars · 20/05/2020 23:59

I hope it can be confirmed by then that Father Christmas has acquired immunity, otherwise socially distancing is going to be a nightmare in his job.

BlackeyedSusan · 21/05/2020 00:00

Santa in a mask?

Christmas is not cancelled in that we will still celebrate the birth of Christ..

maybe quite a few of the traditions will have to wait until the following year. (or Easter.. when I finally stopped feeling nauseus all the time in pregnancy for the first 16 weeks)

It is sad that it will not feel the same. I wonder whether last Christmas was my mum's last on earth, or last with us.

(got the stuffing in ready though.. )
