Warm vs Cold white Christmas lights

Am I the only one who prefers the warm white Xmas lights. Why have we gone cold white in the uk. Am in the Netherlands now and it is all warm white. I think so much more classy. And don’t get me started on blue lights. Simply awful no?

@nightsofcabiria yes I think coloured lights must have been a 70s thing and I also like them (as long as there is no blue!). I think is nice for kids. But am back to the warm white again and a shit load of accumulated decorations - no colour coding on the decorations here - a mish mash

All lights were multicoloured when I was little. Then when I first got my own house I thought I was being sophisticated by having white. Over the last couple of years I’ve moved back to multicoloured on one of the trees and I love it.
A few years home DH decorated the outside of the house with blue lights he’d picked up cheap as a ‘surprise’. I cried Blush

Lordamighty · 21/12/2019 21:42

Warm white indoors, cold white outdoors, it works.

malfoylovespotter · 21/12/2019 21:48

I really like blue lights sorry. I have warm blue rather than cold if that helps.

Practically the whole street has cold white dangly ones on the outside. Boring!

AhoyMrBeaver · 21/12/2019 21:48

All lights were multicoloured when I was young, but really pretty colours different to the bright LED ones you can get today. They always had little flower shades on them too and gave a lovely glow.

Blue lights are so stark and unChristmassy.

SoundofSilence · 21/12/2019 21:49

I much prefer warm white. DP has brought home cool white ones, no doubt being given away by someone, and strung them all over the back garden. They look nice but I look longingly across the way at my neighbour's lovely warm white ones all the time.

NightsOfCabiria · 21/12/2019 21:49

This is my preferred look. Not my house sadly!

Warm white indoors but I do like blue (non-flashing) outside.

Expo · 21/12/2019 21:51

@SoundofSilence seems like a lot of DPs are betraying us Grin. Altho it was my DP who really called it out and I was impressed he noticed it.

Warm white . Can’t stand blue lights .

MirandaWest · 21/12/2019 22:01

Warm white inside. We have bright white outside.

I loved the multicoloured lights with flowers when I was little Smile

BumbleBeee69 · 21/12/2019 22:02

Warm.... loathe all blue lights [santa]

GlamGiraffe · 21/12/2019 22:04

I have cool white purely because all my Christmas decorations (I have 200+different glass ones) are pure white and clear and when I put the warm white with them they didnt like very good.

As lights go I much prefer warm white though. Dont like blue at all, dont like the vivid led colours and wouldn't normally choose the cool white (I have warm in my other trees).
I agree with PPs about the very pale coloured lights from many many years ago and how lively they were, just a mere hint of colour. I remember ours had a tiny plastic, glass effect shades around them and were the palest of colours. That was before everything went tackily vivid and technicolour

JemimaPuddleCat · 21/12/2019 22:05

I also love the warm white and mostly use those. I have a set of 400 on my tree this year where most are static, but some of them twinkle. Gives off a lovely effect.

We've seen some beautiful turquoise/teal lights the past couple of years that my DD would love for her room, but can't find any - if anyone can point me in the direction of some?

minniemoll · 21/12/2019 22:10

My neighbours, who usually have impeccable taste, have some really horrendous flashing blue and cold white lights outside their house. The only bonus is that I can't actually see them from inside, but the neighbours over the way who we've fallen out with can. I just hope they hate them as much as I do....

Lampan · 21/12/2019 22:12

You can’t beat old-fashioned multicoloured incandescent fairy lights. But as they are getting hard to find, I have LEDs on my tree in a mix of warm white and Homebase pastel multicoloured LEDs. The pastel colours are so much nicer than the usual LED colours!

Corneysjazzband · 21/12/2019 22:17

We have cool blue and white outside, absolutely not flashing. The house is white and black, and it does work with the white and blue. It's only one string of each draped from the guttering. Several houses on our street have draped lights at about the same height. In the sitting room we have warm white because that's what works with the colours in here. I spend far too much time planning colour co-ordination! The dining room will have cool white if I get round to putting up decorations in there.

FalalalalaloreanFortescue · 21/12/2019 22:22

We had a lovely set growing up which was pale pink, pale green and pale blue. They were the best ever!

Now the only multi-coloured lights I can find are horrible blue, orange and red WTF?!

So my hierarchy is:

1990's multi-coloured lights
Warm white
Cool white

Modern multi-coloured

Blue.

Expo · 21/12/2019 22:24

@FalalalalaloreanFortescue hahah love the massive gap before the blue. Seems the country is indeed split between old fashioned coloured and warm white lovers. And the cold white and blue gang Xmas Wink

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/12/2019 22:28

We've all switched back to warm whites on our street. I was really happy that my cold ones died so I didn't stand out.

Popadoodledoooo · 21/12/2019 22:29

Warm for sure and don’t get me started on blue Christmas lights Xmas Envy

OhTheRoses · 21/12/2019 22:29

Warm white inside.
Outside I have cold white all year in a row of bay trees.

FalalalalaloreanFortescue · 21/12/2019 22:29

@Expo I've written 1990's multi-coloured lights but they were ancient when I was a kid so much have been early 80s or even before!

I'm inclined to agree with PP saying the 1970s had it correct. The modern lights are awful.

BelfastNonBlonde · 21/12/2019 22:35

ALWAYS warm white.. I HATE cold white!
