Who does a Christmas/North pole breakfast on the 1st?

For a few years now I have done my children a 'Christmas breakfast' on the 1st December! We don't have an elf so I don't call it a 'Northpole breakfast' but it is pretty much the same.

I decorate the table and I have silver chargers that I put the food on - Christmas tree crumpets, mini mice pies and gingerbread men. This year I'm doing them a 'candy cane' of sliced strawberries and banana. I always put a little chocolate figure next to their place. They have Christmas plates and bottles I will get out. On the table will also be their Christmas card from me and their advent calendar (traditional picture one). They love it and it gets us all in the festive mood. Anyone else?

I always do a special breakfast on Sundays anyway. Usually pancakes or croissants.

I quite like the idea of doing something Scandinavian style for breakfast, and calling it North Pole breakfast Grin. Sounds like a bit of fun!
Maybe I'll do cinnamon buns, and get the Christmas china out.

Thanks, OP, you've inspired me.

@mog - a walk in the woods sounds lovely! It's not much prep - just slicing some fruit and putting crumpets in the toaster!

@UndertheCedartree I think your tradition is a lovely idea and I don’t understand these posters alluding that because you have one of these ‘new fangled’ traditions it also means you’re someone who does the Elf, Christmas Eve box etc etc. As I’m sure you’re very aware, we can all pick a ‘tradition’ that suits our family! Doesn’t have to be all of them or none of them!!!

It’s a Sunday, it’s your day off, I’m sure your family will have a lot of fun and silliness together and why the hell not!?! It’s almost Christmas after all.....!!! WinkGrin

Is this all connected to that bloody elf on a shelf thing? I've never heard of it and don't know anyone who does it. Ditto Christmas Eve boxes, which I've only heard of on Mumsnet.

Christmas does not need to be a month long!
...........
I agree with every word!
That and Father Christmas.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day can be really lovely, fragrant, exciting, etc, but surely that is quite enough with the exception of any parties we or children attend.

Pannalash · 28/11/2019 19:30

Crikey, I love Christmas but North Pole Breakfast, dec 1st hampers, Christmas Eve Hampers, Elf on the Fecking Shelf, and most bizarrely of all, monthly Rudolph Days and giving your own kids a Christmas Card plus a shit tonne of blardy hot chocolate and ‘new Christmas Eve PJs! Add in a’love Honey’ advent calendar and the worlds gone mad I tell ya!

UndertheCedartree · 28/11/2019 19:30

@Courtney555 - ok ok. Already answered that - that already existed with all the expensive advent calendars. We don't buy into that, personally - we just have a breakfast. I would have thought all the pressure to go to expensive fairs and pantos and santas fits more into this mentality rather than my personal tradition of a cheap breakfast Confused

Haha! Cut and paste because she can’t answer.

So plastic tat is items that are not actually plastic. Your own polyester jumpers, crackers full of future landfill, baubles, wrapping paper, ribbon, etc is not plastic tat yet OPs lovely memorable meaningful breakfast with her children is plastic tat.

Are you ok Hun?

MarshaBradyo · 28/11/2019 19:32

Is North Pole breakfast a trend or did you make up the name? Ditto the candy cane things

I’ve never seen or heard of this I’m feeling over-Christmassed.

UndertheCedartree · 28/11/2019 19:35

@bluerussian - as I explained I started the tradition when I was a nurse so I didn't have Christmas eve and day with my children. This year I am lucky enough to be with my children (benefit of having a mental breakdown!) but we won't have any parties or santa visits etc as I can't afford it. We'll make lots of happy memories together - including our Christmas breakfast!

We don't but that sounds lovely. Might do that seeing as though it's a Sunday

BertrandRussell · 28/11/2019 19:37

I’m not trying to be as grinch, honestly- but what do you do on Christmas morning if you’ve done all that on December 1sr?

Courtney555 · 28/11/2019 19:38

Haha! Cut and paste because she can’t answer.

Definitely that and definitely not because you can't understand either way, so why waste my time repeating over and over what's already been explained perfectly coherently by many others. I have neither the patience or Crayola to make it any simpler...

So plastic tat is items that are not actually plastic.

Wait.... wait....is the penny dropping.... Just pop the word mentality in there...

This should so be in classics Grin

Ukholidaysaregreat · 28/11/2019 19:38

Ignore the grinches! I love Christmas breakfast!

@pannalash - that's quite a list! I can't afford all that but I do always give my children a card. I've made them this year (Occ therapy craft group!) I write everything I am proud of them for over the year and it can be quite fun looking back over the years!

I've never heard of this but it's such a lovely idea.

@bertrand - nothing normally as I was at work. But this year I'm looking forward to watching them open their presents, eating pastries and playing.

I read an interesting article last year about Christmas pudding. It used to be eaten all winter, then (might have been the Victorians?) it became a Christmas day treat. A lot of the things we call Christmas activities are actually decent winter activities, so it really is fair enough to start early.

evilharpy · 28/11/2019 19:56

Lots of mention of strawberries... the grinches have missed a trick, they could have complained about buying fruit out of season.

Anyway. I have never heard of this but it sounds very sweet. I might do something similar in a week or two but we have birthdays at the end of November including a party on the 30th, and a couple of other events that I help with next week, so I’m a bit worn out. But I like the idea of a special festive breakfast. We’ve booked a Santa visit one Sunday so maybe we’ll do it that morning before we go. No plastic required.

UndertheCedartree · 28/11/2019 19:56

@thisbear - I love Christmas pudding! Wouldn't mind eating it all winter!

BertrandRussell Christmas morning for us is something nice but quick like poached eggs, smoked salmon or pastries. Tbh I also do pancakes every Sunday so I would hope that just making them green instead of plain won’t bring about the end of days.

Whiteroverbaby · 28/11/2019 19:58

@UndertheCedartree
I think what you do is lovely for your children and they are very lucky to have you put time and effort into making the run up to Christmas Day so exciting.
