Who does a Christmas/North pole breakfast on the 1st?

For a few years now I have done my children a 'Christmas breakfast' on the 1st December! We don't have an elf so I don't call it a 'Northpole breakfast' but it is pretty much the same.

I decorate the table and I have silver chargers that I put the food on - Christmas tree crumpets, mini mice pies and gingerbread men. This year I'm doing them a 'candy cane' of sliced strawberries and banana. I always put a little chocolate figure next to their place. They have Christmas plates and bottles I will get out. On the table will also be their Christmas card from me and their advent calendar (traditional picture one). They love it and it gets us all in the festive mood. Anyone else?

I was tempted to do this mid-December as we have a family birthday on the 15th and like to ignore Christmas until after then so the birthday is special. But I'm also trying to make Christmas less about huge amounts of food and sugar this year.

TheCanterburyWhales · 28/11/2019 06:17

Who does it?
People with too much time on their hands?
ChristmasZillas?
The kind of people who INSIST LOUDLY ON HAVING LOTS OF ORGANIZED FUN AND IT'S GOING TO BE SUCH FUN ISN'T IT?!!!

And I am far from the Christmas police. I've been itching to put my decorations up and I love everything about it The traditions (there's a clue in the word there) and the rituals.

But I've never done an Elf, or a hamper and I certainly won't be having my breakfasts under a tree.

foamrolling · 28/11/2019 06:22

But do you do a homemade 3D gingerbread train? For some reason that has properly tickled me Grin

I actually quite like the idea of a christmassy breakfast. I'm working Sunday and have my usual weekend working mum guilt. Maybe I'll do a low key version for them all to wake up to.

The sooner Armageddon comes now, the better!

Barbararara · 28/11/2019 06:31

Sounds lovely OP, I hope your family enjoy it. Xmas Smile

Vebrithien · 28/11/2019 06:33

We've never done it, nor would I probably call it that, but we will have a nice breakfast (clementine pancakes) on Sunday, then head out with 3 yo DD to watch the CBeebies Christmas panto in the cinema.

There's no judgement here. If it makes you and your family happy, then go for it. It's been a pretty shit year for us, so I'm currently sat here with the Christmas up and the fairy lights on. It's earlier than we've ever done it before, but is giving much needed boost.

Vebrithien · 28/11/2019 06:33

Christmas tree up!

TheCanterburyWhales · 28/11/2019 06:35

Billy- the marketing men who can see the terminal gullible coming a mile off (even through a snowstorm) would hijack the end of bleeding days if they could sell another personalised faux wooden thingy to accompany it.

Courtney555 · 28/11/2019 06:36

Jesus wept.

I'm Christmas obsessed. Numerous trees, garlands, arrangements all around the house. Mince pies, poncey wrapped presents, wreaths and candles everywhere. We make our own crackers, we make paper chains.

December 1st boxes? Elf on the shelf? Are people trying to out plastic-tat each other?

When did the beautiful traditional Christmas get replaced with Christmas junk? Confused

What tat can you waste money on, on say, December 5th? You don't do a December 5th hamper??! Have you written your 2nd December, pre Christmas cards?

It's Dec 1st. Start the advent. Christing Christ Hmm

welshmumofboys · 28/11/2019 06:36

We do this (and the elf). It's a bit of fun and my boys absolutely love it. We do keep the breakfast quite simple (Christmas tree crumpets and a box of Frosties instead of their usual weetabix or porridge) rather than going all out. If you want to do it and it will make you happy, go for it. If it's not your thing then don't. There's no right or wrong.

Courtney555 · 28/11/2019 06:37

Terminal gullible

Grin I'm stealing that!

PlumsGalore · 28/11/2019 06:39

^

Is this a Thing? Christmas breakfast, elf on a shelf, Christmas Eve boxes. Do children even get excited anymore about the big day?

All sounds like an even more exhausting, expensive PIA.

ooooohbetty · 28/11/2019 06:40

Why? December 1st isn't Christmas.

BeanBag7 · 28/11/2019 06:48

I've not heard of this either but google tells me it's a way to "welcome the elf on the shelf to your home" which sounds like a bit of a faff.

My issue would be it's nowhere near Christmas so it seems off to do a christmassy breakfast for one day, then go back to weetabix for 23 days, and then have Christmas. It's a bit far away from the actual day.

We have a birthday in our family on the 8th December so won't be doing much christmassy stuff before that. 2 weeks of pre-Christmas stuff is enough for me but if it makes you and your kids happy OP, go ahead.

thaegumathteth · 28/11/2019 06:49

I don't do it but I don't understand why some people get so offended / morally outraged by other people do it. Why would it create more single use plastic for example? A lot of people say they Are reusing things etc. Live and let live ..... it's Christmas !

LucheroTena · 28/11/2019 06:49

Jesus, why do women do this to themselves? Making Christmas into a month long list of jobs.

Piccalino3 · 28/11/2019 06:51

Gosh OP not quite sure why people are so offended by this idea. I personally think it's fun and have been looking on Pinterest - there are some great ideas on there.

I'm going to do a North Pole breakfast for the first time this year but maybe on the 8th as they elf will arrive on Sunday with the advent calendars and we're getting the decorations out so it all may be a bit too much.

Personally I don't understand why people are so offended by the idea - for us it it'll be some strawberries and bananas cut so they can be positioned in a candy cane shape, mini glass bottles that have milk and some pancakes in snowmen shapes or something along those lines with a few decorations I already have. It's fun for the kids and I like to celebrate Christmas for the whole month of December.

Rachel438 · 28/11/2019 06:53

@Courtney555

Where is the plastic involved in having something different for breakfast with a little chocolate Santa next to each place?

My kids are too big now, but yes, I would have done this for a bit of fun to start off the advent calendar - the countdown if you will.

It hardly seems a terrible consumerist crime that some are making it out to be on this thread.

Vodkafairy75 · 28/11/2019 07:03

I’m thinking of doing one this year, already got my Christmas Tree crumpets in the freezer 😊. Was also going to do a strawberry/banana candy cane too for healthiness 😉

To the people complaining about it being a ‘thing’.....it’s only a breakfast but maybe with Christmas themed food or a sugary cereal they might not normally get. It’s not like people are setting up a breakfast of medieval banquet proportions 🤷🏻‍♀️ They just want to make a breakfast special for their kids, I really don’t see the problem with that. Confused

Courtney555 · 28/11/2019 07:06

It's the plastic tat mentality. Encompasses many things that this is a typical example of.

Actual evidence of non recyclable plastic per activity, not required Hmm

BerwickLad · 28/11/2019 07:14

Personally I do a homemade 2D gingerbread house by making said house and then flattening it with a festive shovel covered in tinsel and fairy lights.

Florin · 28/11/2019 07:23

Why are so people so offended, if you don’t like it/don’t want to do any it just scroll on past. No one is saying you have to do it. Yes my husband and I make a gingerbread train but we do it because we enjoy it. It is the start of Christmas for us, we get in a bottle of wine and enjoy doing it together one evening. None of it is an extra chore it’s an activity we like doing together. We don’t really have any interest in watching tv together in the evenings so like doing stuff like this. Breakfast is just pancakes with sweets as scarves and choc chips for eyes to make them into snowmen. Decorations are reused each year. Advent calendar is the schleich horse one which is to go with the wooden stable he will get for Christmas so no plastic wastage and he is getting a book. Husband was never that keen on Christmas but this has revitalized it for him.

Otter46 · 28/11/2019 07:26

I’m in awe of people who find the time for this. Amazing! It’s not for us as I prefer Christmas Eve and day to be the big thing (plus I don’t have the time as work v long hrs).

Vodkafairy75 · 28/11/2019 07:27

What?! In eating breakfast food? Some people have said that they have Christmas plates that get used every year, blankets, duvets that get used every year. It’s being reused so not really a plastic tat mentality as they aren’t getting chucked out once Christmas is over and new ones bought each year!
