Who does a Christmas/North pole breakfast on the 1st?

For a few years now I have done my children a 'Christmas breakfast' on the 1st December! We don't have an elf so I don't call it a 'Northpole breakfast' but it is pretty much the same.

I decorate the table and I have silver chargers that I put the food on - Christmas tree crumpets, mini mice pies and gingerbread men. This year I'm doing them a 'candy cane' of sliced strawberries and banana. I always put a little chocolate figure next to their place. They have Christmas plates and bottles I will get out. On the table will also be their Christmas card from me and their advent calendar (traditional picture one). They love it and it gets us all in the festive mood. Anyone else?

@UndertheCedartree I hope you had a lovely breakfast with your kids as well as those that were doing a North Pole Breakfast too.

@Florin love your gingerbread train 😃.

Here’s my plastic tat mentality Breakfast 😉

"Advent" is in full swing here too. Our Christmas gnome was found this morning perched on top of the broken toilet holding an old Mr Hanky the Christmas Poo teddy. That got a great laugh from DS. I split a Lego Creator Christmas scene set into 24 parts to be built by DS each day. He was super excited to get the instruction booklet and the first box of parts this morning.

Later we'll go to my parents' house where my DM and I have split a 1000pce Snowman and Snowdog jigsaw into 24 parts, to be done each day. The trick with this one is that DS doesn't get to see the box so will only discover the image day by day as he puts each section together. We've split the jigsaw in a way that the more boring parts will be done on the first days and he'll slowly get a clue as to what it is, and will do the snowdog on Christmas Eve.

My 18 year old was at a friend’s last night- but I got a text this morning wishing me a happy advent. Thank goodness I hadn’t decided he was too old for a calendar!

Aww...thanks for all the messages and pictures! Love hearing about all your plastic tat mentality - I mean traditions! Grin Love the puzzle idea and the gingerbread train. Glad you all enjoyed your breakfasts Smile

My children really enjoyed their breakfast. I gave my DD a Raymond Briggs Father Christmas advent calendar and my DS's had an ice rink with a beautiful Christmas tree behind it. We then had to watch our DVD of Father Christmas - love it! We have the books as well old ones from my childhood. Then we watched the Charlie and Lola Christmas episode and then Mr Bean!

My parents sent them a Jacquie Lawson advent calendar on the computer so they spent time playing on that. I'd decorated the table and sitting room mantle last night and then my DD helped do the dining room mantle and a few things on the shelves so we look very Christmasy. We'll get our tree in a couple of weeks.

Later my DS and I played Ticket to ride which was fun and then we went upstairs and got our Christmasy clothes out from under my bed! The DC are now in their red penguin onsies. All in all a lovely day Smile

I am impressed. And wish I had done this for my niece.

OP, I admit that I was one of those who had thought that a North Pole breakfast was just another activity to stress over, but you have reminded me that it is, in fact, the simple things that can make Christmas fun.

Elbeagle · 01/12/2019 18:56

We usually have pancakes and fruit on a Sunday. So this morning we cut the pancakes into Christmas trees, sprinkled some icing sugar on to the plate to look like snow and arranged the fruit into a candy cane. Absolute minimal effort, DC loved it. Win win!

lostlalaloopsy · 01/12/2019 19:42

We had our North Pole breakfast this morning, no plastic tat - just stuff we use every year. It was great fun and the kids were chuffed. They however did find my snowman pancakes very appealing - will need some practice!!

That should say the kids did not find my snowman pancakes very appealing!! Can't say I blame them 🤣🤣

I do to every year, this year it was yesterday as it was DS's 7th birthday, it's also a tuff I keep and use every year.

They love it and it gets us all Christmassy!

Good on you OP glad you enjoyed a lovely day. Never heard of it before but I think it sounds great.
Our elfs arrived last night hate them (brought by a family member)!? My DS loves them I mean loves it all Christmas traditions are the best that way. They pick you they hate seeing Santa Christmas eve boxes and pjs but the elfs they get.
Each to their own but I am making them see Frozen two ❄

twinkledag · 01/12/2019 20:55

That sounds fun! I want to do that for my DC 😀

milliefiori · 01/12/2019 22:14

I spent the afternoon making and decorating a Christmas wreath. When it was ready I went to hang it on the door and there was a granny and grandson outside staring. They were going on a walk to see how many decorations they could spot. Ours was the first one. So cute!

milliefiori · 01/12/2019 22:19

Human ingenuity to turn the environmentally coldest, darkest and hardest part of the year into the most wonderful. Because that is the actual purpose of it, you know that right. The rest of it is just the stories various societies have attached to this brilliant bit of human cleverness and imagination

I'm a Christian and even I completely agree with this. Everything we can do to spread light and cheer and fun in the darkest coldest days of the year is human ingenuity. I adore Advent more than Christmas itself.

UserPop · 01/12/2019 22:40

We don't, but I did make pancakes with bananas and honey this morning for a change, does that count? Grin

We do new PJ's on Christmas Eve each year though, and the majority of the time they are Christmas themed, but they are worn all year regardless Grin

I've RTFT. There are some miserable folk out there! Let people do things and be happy!

Arrowfanatic · 02/12/2019 14:08

We dont do this usually because A) sundays were up & out early for a club and B) its the day after my birthday and there may or may not be a hangover and/or lack of sleep involved.

But i do like the idea of a special breakfast in December on whatever day you choose. I wont go so far as calling it a north pole breakfast or making fruit candy canes but there will be waffles & ice cream involved Xmas Grin

There is a lot of these "traditions" that i cant stand like that freaky elf but thata not to say that other people shouldn't enjou them.

Fluffiest · 04/12/2019 18:31

Question. Where do you get the Christmas tree crumpets? I thought I'd pick some up in ASDA this morning but there was no sign of them.

SatsukiKusakabe · 04/12/2019 18:42

I’ve found them in Asda before, this year we could only get the square ones so I used a tree cookie cutter

Whusky · 04/12/2019 20:16

I was a lurker when this thread was originally posted, and I want to say THANK YOU OP for the brilliant idea.

We did our plastic tat-tastic breakfast on the first, and my kids, dh and I, and the huskies LOVED IT.

And for everyone that goes 'OTT' for Christmas - keep doing it! As someone who is going through alottashit right now, hearing about your wonderful Christmas traditions/seeing decorations up early makes me smile. You're great!

ZenNudist · 04/12/2019 20:25

Im a Christian (recent revert) and find I want to hold back Christmas celebrations this year. Advent is a time of preparation not celebration.

Hear me out as I think it applies to everyone. If you are having special breakfasts on 1 Dec what's left for Christmas? Everyone will be fed up of it.

I like the idea of the poster who makes a big whoop of bringing out their Christmas mugs. At least its environmentally friendly. I can't imagine my dc getting excited about Christmas crockery. Our ad hoc Christmas mugs just get used all year round (with the denby in case you think weve got no class). I hate seasonal stuff.

Whusky · 04/12/2019 20:32

I don't think happiness should be for one day only.

And as for what's left for the day itself - presents? Excitement? Joy? Food? Spending time together? The list goes on.

I don't get how eating different foods for one meal on one day is detrimental to the environment.

Parker231 · 04/12/2019 20:46

Having a special breakfast on 1 December is only the start of the celebrations. December is brilliant for special meals- Christmas is a perfect excuse to meet up with friends and family for an extra night out. I love Christmas!

Mymycherrypie · 04/12/2019 21:00

I was raised in a very Christian household even though I am an atheist. I can’t get worked up about Christmas tree crumpets a whole 24 days before the event, it takes nothing away from Jesus’s birth and it encourages sitting and eating with your family at a table, not on laps or on the run.

Jesus would be pleased people are together. He wouldn’t care they were eating tree shaped crumpets instead of round ones.
