Can we have a men’s gifts thread

Barbarara · 05/11/2019 11:11

There are often threads asking for ideas for specific men and I’ve often picked up a good idea from them. I thought it might be useful to have a general one to share ideas of what we’re buying, hits and misses of previous years.
So far...
dh is getting clothes, new belt (sounds dull but he’s very particular and it took me a while to track down the exact one so he’ll appreciate the effort, and his current one is looking worn), a magnetic wristband (so I don’t have to hunt for missing screws) and Bluetooth earphones
Df will be getting sports dvds
Dfil is getting a weatherstick and toffee that you break with a hammer and possibly a wireless bird box or a trip on a steam train/canal boat (still thinking about this)

I’ve had success in previous years with grid it for both men and women, and with thin optics tiny reading glasses. Though it took a bit of convincing to give them a go, both dh and fil love them.

Sugru went down like a lead balloon here though it gets recommended a lot, and I’d quite like some myself.

@SarahJinx would you mind linking to the fire tools? My DH would like that!

I posted this on one of the bargain threads but this is a good place for it as might help someone here.
Last year my DH got this in a secret Santa and we’ve used it loads. It’s a tool for cooking meat. It doesn’t look like much but it’s honestly so good and so easy to use.

You marinate chicken, pop the chicken slices onto it and shove it in the oven.

Coffee clip is a perfect gift for several relatives thanks

Shitfuckoh · 27/11/2019 09:53

Gillette have some giftsets on offer. I've put a referral link on the referral thread which gets you 20% off and can be combined with the GIFT25 / GIFT30 code. Brings some of the gift sets down to a very good price if anyone is needing to buy these - I always buy 1 for the DCs dad.

@Barbararara
It is not cheap but well worth it. I intend to give dh one this year.

Grr phone messing up

I've bought my DH amongst other things some sheepskin insoles from Celtic and Co...he has a longish walk home from the station and always moans about being cold so am quite pleased with them!
Also bought him a voucher for a massage at a local spa on Groupon.

I'm going to order a multi-usb plug and a multi charging cable (it has three 'ends' for different types of devices!) As we have some many devices between us that constantly need changing and we always misplace cables.

I'm thinking of buying bottle of local wine for FIL who is a big wine drinker but will buy himself whatever he wants, so I think a local wine might make a good present. DH is also buying himself a bottle of our local gin!

Good ideas on this thread! I got wallet ninja and spirit level pen for df. Now only waiting for Black Friday deals on Lego for dh.

EmGee · 27/11/2019 14:48

For any gardening fans or wearers of wellies, welly boot inner socks are a good buy. They are slip on socklets made of a very thick material. My dad swears by them as does DH.

Practical, very useful and cheap! You can get them in good farming/outdoor clothing shops. Possibly Amazon although I've only ever bought them directly from the above kind of shop.

ajandjjmum · 27/11/2019 18:38

Any idea where the Black Friday Lego deals might be Bansku19 - I am struggling for DH, but I know he'll love one of the Architecture sets.

jakeyboy1 · 27/11/2019 18:44

We don't do much for each other at Xmas as our bdays are just before and his is a a big one where he's having a trip abroad so this year even less than normal at Xmas!

His Xmas present is tickets to An Evening with Harry Redknapp.

I like the Peter Crouch book idea may go for that as well.

@CurbsideProphet Eva Solo does an amazing cup that keeps the drinks really hot Eva solo Perhaps shop around as I just picked from their website and bought one in a shop near where I live much cheaper

Mummyme87 · 27/11/2019 22:21

curbside prophet Klean Kanteen. Keep your drink hot almost all day

BrexitBirgit · 27/11/2019 22:48

Mine is impossible to buy for, and rarely enjoys or uses anything he's given, even gift cards (not from me) linger unused. - I've given up really. Chocolate and Craft Gin / Whisky it is... Last year we set up a joint standing donation to the food bank instead of presents, I did approve, but hey, not exactly romantic!

But I saw this which might be of interest to someone outdoorsy and looking for low-tech gadgets: Pocket sundial :

Bansku19 · 28/11/2019 05:43

@ajandjjmum Try Lego website. They have Black Friday sales. Empire State Building is reduced now.

I have a thing on my key ring that stores an emergency rolled up £20. By True Utility.
It takes paper £20 notes but only I managed to squeeze a single plastic-y £10 note in when I used the £20 recently and the cash machine spat out £10 notes when I tried later to refill it. I'm hoping when the new plastic twenties come out that will fit. Or I will stick to a £10. www.amazon.co.uk/True-Utility-TU241B-P-CashStash-Waterproof/dp/B00D6D8YAG

Passing on an idea from my elderly neighbour!
For someone else also into military aviation history:
the Spitfire Club project would probably interest them.

(short newspaper article about it: www.flyer.co.uk/the-acesquadron-scrambles-at-enstone-airfield/)

'Adopt A Spitfire' (£19.99, includes tour etc)
www.spitfireclub.co.uk/shop/acesquadron-gifts---sponsorship-options/adopt-a-spitfire

''Spitfire Flight Simulator experience' (£40)

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 28/11/2019 08:29

@7Days

Thanks so much for that book recommendation: I've finally crossed off the trickiest-to-find-something-original-for person from my list!

bellinisurge · 28/11/2019 08:48

I would love a Spitfire simulation thing. As would dh.

PrincessSarene · 28/11/2019 13:55

I’ve just ordered a world globe spirit decanter for DH, which currently has £10 off. He like whisky so hoping this will be a nice addition to buying him a bottle! Link to Amazon: Decanter

picklemepopcorn · 28/11/2019 14:51

This is flipping brilliant! Unashamed bookmark for later more detailed shopping...

Leflic · 28/11/2019 18:11

This website has just popped up on Facebook. A leather apron sounds quite cool for the man that has everything ?

louise5754 · 28/11/2019 21:28

Hi. I've just read the whole post and I cannot think of a single thing he would like. I honestly think that i put time and effort into his gifts but he always send them back. Over the years I've bought him a hamper with cider crisps nibbles, CD's Books, a watch personalised wallet, aftershave, wallet ninja, lyrics to his favourite song, a coat. He has expensive taste and all the little bits I get don't add up to the price of one top but I can't afford it. Should I just give him money or is that a cop out? X

7Days · 29/11/2019 00:14

That's very demoralising Louise.
Tbh I think I would. Maybe a bottle of favourite tipple to open on the day, with a gift card for a shop he likes?
