Can we have a men’s gifts thread

Barbarara · 05/11/2019 11:11

There are often threads asking for ideas for specific men and I’ve often picked up a good idea from them. I thought it might be useful to have a general one to share ideas of what we’re buying, hits and misses of previous years.
So far...
dh is getting clothes, new belt (sounds dull but he’s very particular and it took me a while to track down the exact one so he’ll appreciate the effort, and his current one is looking worn), a magnetic wristband (so I don’t have to hunt for missing screws) and Bluetooth earphones
Df will be getting sports dvds
Dfil is getting a weatherstick and toffee that you break with a hammer and possibly a wireless bird box or a trip on a steam train/canal boat (still thinking about this)

I’ve had success in previous years with grid it for both men and women, and with thin optics tiny reading glasses. Though it took a bit of convincing to give them a go, both dh and fil love them.

Sugru went down like a lead balloon here though it gets recommended a lot, and I’d quite like some myself.

Thank you @Evalina!
I feel daft for not knowing that now Blush

ajandjjmum · 23/11/2019 09:35

SarahJinx
That torch sounds great for dog walks - what sort is it please?

Bansku19 · 23/11/2019 14:02

I am hopefully giving one of these sets for dh:
Lego Darth Vader's castle
Lego Yoda
Lego lunar lander

I am hoping that one of these is significantly reduced in Black Friday.

fedup21 · 23/11/2019 14:17

@recklessgran and @SarahJinx

Would you be able to link to your torches please?

DieCryHate · 23/11/2019 16:46

First of all thanks so much for the brilliant suggestions. I have added the bird poo removers and aero press to my husband's list, the wildlife camera to my own and will get my dad the faber book of reportage.

In previous years gifts that have gone down well were:

Weekend festival ticket (checked his mates were going first and got him the time off work)
Ticketmaster gift voucher
Single malt whisky selection of minis
Crystal skull vodka
Decent headphones
Heavy metal activity book
Lord of the pies apron for my pie loving dad with a hairy bikers pie book
Home made selection box for my dad. Just bought multipacks of all his favourites. It wasn't pretty but he loved it
Got a voucher for a pet artist for FIL and he could choose the style of a painting of his dog

mclover · 23/11/2019 18:21

I've got my FIL the Bletchley park code breakers puzzle book after eh GCHQ one was a hit last year

doodlejump1980 · 24/11/2019 08:49

Thanks for all the ideas on here!

Barbararara · 24/11/2019 12:31

@Curious2468 thanks for the 3D printer suggestion. I never would have thought of that and assumed they were much more expensive.

Curious2468 · 24/11/2019 13:35

My pleasure. It’s really amazing. I’m currently printing this on it

Can we have a men’s gifts thread
PlatinumBrunette · 24/11/2019 14:00

@Curious2468 THANK YOU!
DH is impossible - no hobbies, nothing. But this may well be the coup I need. Do I need to get any 'stuff' to go with it? And where's best to get it from?

WellTidy · 24/11/2019 14:18

DH so far has some little things:
Cuff links - Reef do ones with lobster claws
Charbonnel et Walker hot chocolate
Personalised bar of dairy milk
Contigo travel cup
Chillys bottle
Private eye - obvs will buy the edition that comes out right before Christmas
New Lee Child Jack Reacher book

He is having two pairs of cycling shorts from the DC and some posh trainers along the lines of those worn by someone who set a new marathon record in from me

Only other thing you need is filament, Amazon do quite a few on Black Friday offers atm. A roll lasts ages. There are some great Facebook groups you can join for tips and when you build it follow YouTube how to build videos to get it set up nicely.

AnnPerkins · 25/11/2019 11:17

I love this thread every year, it is so helpful.

DH only likes useful things, he doesn't appreciate novelty or gadget stuff. He loved this spirit-level pencil last year though. I think I got it from one of these threads.

I love the Tutankhamen tickets and wildlife camera ideas and have ordered him a magnet wrist strap.

Octothorpe · 25/11/2019 11:25

I’ve looked into the Tutankhamun tickets a bit further and if you buy a gift card, so the giftee can choose when to go, it’ll be sent by email. But luckily you can choose the date for it to be sent - so I’m going to ask for it to be delivered on Christmas Day, and I’ve bought a funny Ancient Egypt-themed greetings card to give DB in which I’ll write ‘check your email’ Smile

winewolfhowls · 25/11/2019 18:45

Just seen a Haynes? Build your own bat detector on amazon, its 19.99 but going to camel it to see if it comes down.

Waterandlemonjuice · 25/11/2019 21:57

I’ve bought dh

Calvin Klein pyjamas

Tickets to Freud self portraits exhibition at the RA
Tickets to Moving to Mars at The Design Museum
Tickets to Warhol at the Tate
Running shorts
A book about Retro technology
Six mini bottles of red wine
The new Peter Crouch book, I robot

Be1atrix · 25/11/2019 22:37

This is a brilliantly useful thread. I have bought lots from it this weekend, including form cards, the grid, sugru, Clinique for men.

I really recommend the magnetic wrist thing for catching screws etc.

There's also multi tool pens on amazon which are useful and fab presents!

gleegeek · 26/11/2019 08:29

I haven't bought anything for dh yet but last year's best received present was a beanie hat with a torch inbuilt. He's used it loadsSmile
Will have a proper look at this thread later, need ideas for dad too!

Aposterhasnoname · 26/11/2019 11:07

Got DH a cricket World Cup winners top and an elcamino bracelet with a couple of country steps. Reckon that will keep me going in stocking fillers for a few years.

Cookit · 26/11/2019 11:32

Really struggling for DH. Doesn’t really read, listens to music on Spotify and we don’t have CD or DVD players anymore. Tends to buy things he wants anyway like cooking accessories specifically for slow cooking meat. Likes gardening but again pretty much has the tools he needs.

I am quite against getting “stuff” for the sake of getting stuff but I need to at least get something. Ideally I’d like to get an antique or expensive item second hand as I’m really trying not to bring more rubbish into the world. He’s quite traditional and likes his waxed jacket and having nice wine glasses and that sort of thing. I can’t put my finger on what he would want though.

Previous years I did F&M hamper and Economist subscription. Before kids I used to book us a weekend away.

Octothorpe · 26/11/2019 12:39

I think I might have posted this last year but if anyone has to buy for a male who's interested in bread-making - possibly on the more professional/fanatical end of the scale! - THIS is a great site to explore. It's called Bakery Bits and sells everything you need if you're really serious about bread-making. They also have links to courses.

(Obviously it's for anyone interested in baking; I've bought things from them myself and can recommend)

Octothorpe · 26/11/2019 12:46

PS to Cookit - why not buy a really nice antique wine glass or decanter for your DH? There are lots of reputable dealers who specialise in glass and you can buy to suit your budget.

I have a friend who collects old and beautiful wine glasses, and uses them - she has a big collection now and would never just put them in a display cabinet. She reckons they're less easily breakable than modern ones Smile

MrBobLobLaw · 26/11/2019 12:51

Saw this coffee bag clip on Trouva that I think I'll get for DP as a stocking-type gift. Great for coffee lovers (DP is a barista so v picky!!).

www.trouva.com/products/brass-coffee-scoop-with-clip?

I'm getting my brother some Happy Socks as he likes mismatched socks.

I've got DFather a Tile before which has gone down well. For those who don't know, it's a key ring thing that attaches to keys/wallet/whatever and links to a phone app so you can ring it to find lost keys etc.
