Okay so:
Turkey (with bacon)
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing
Sausage meat
Honey roasted parsnips
Roast potatoes
Carrots
Green beans
Cranberry sauce
Yorkshire pudding???

Is that it? I've never made one myself and I'm panicking that I've forgotten something? Also, do you do Yorkshire pudding for Christmas? What do you eat the rest of the day? Help!

Carrots glazed with marmalade

And, I always make a Champagne sorbet for between starter and main - yes, we are at the table for fucking ages!

ohtheholidays · 27/11/2018 02:48

I love these threads when you get to see how different every one has Christmas day and the food they eat.

We have
Roast Turkey
Baked glazed ham
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing made with sausage meat
Honey roasted parsnips
Glazed carrots
Brussel sprouts
Roast potatoes
Cauliflower cheese
Mashed potatoes
Yorkshire Puddings
Cranberry sauce
Apple sauce(I'm thinking about trying to make my own for the first time)
Gravy.

The rest of the day I'm thinking for breakfast about making some cinnabons and laying out some pastries and I'll put out some crispy smoked bacon to go with it along side some bucks fizz,a nice pot of coffee and a pot of tea and some orange juice for the 2 youngest DC.

Then later on in the day about 7pm my DH makes a buffet for all of us.

thighofrelief · 27/11/2018 03:14

Look, who's having chips? Show yourself now!

Shriek · 27/11/2018 03:20

Chips????!!!!

Noons!

StoppinBy · 27/11/2018 04:16

@ohtheholidays apple sauce is very very easy to make. Slice up some granny smith apples very finely, add a smidge of water so they don't stick then stew them down and whizz it with a stick mixer once they are soft.

I personally don't add sugar but many people do sweeten it to taste.

Haha, my Mum once asked me how I make my apple sauce as it was so nice Hmm she doesn't like cooking, I did have to hide my snigger when I told her it was just apples haha

Amazonian27 · 27/11/2018 06:30

Yes MarxandMarzipan just a small amount of each type of potatoes (mash, roast and croquet potatoes). I think the potatoes gravy and cranberry sauce is my favourite part of the meal. I only have a tiny amount of meat.

GrumpyOldMare · 27/11/2018 06:58

Nobody likes sprouts

I do! I don't know anyone that doesn't like them.

Bowchicawowow · 27/11/2018 07:08

We have a ham too (English but with Irish roots). We also make our own stuffing from a recipe handed down for my DGM and it is delicious. I would never have thought to have cauliflower cheese but it sounds delicious and would go reallly well with turkey. I have a great recipe for potatoes which can be made in advance and which takes the hassle out of peeling and preparing on the day which I will try to post.

Oh and if you are making JO get ahead gravy be careful with the star anise. I find it a bit medicinal...

Bowchicawowow · 27/11/2018 07:09

This is well worth doing.

There is no way in hell that sprouts will cross my threshold. My dad made me eat then every Christmas and I point blank refuse to have them at my table. Yuk!!!!!

But yes, gravy is a given. DH does homemade gravy the week before from chicken stock and it's unreal.

For pud we have my famous homemade white chocolate and Oreo double decker cheesecake. What on earth is bread pudding? Is it a pudding or something you have with main? I've got a list of dry nibbles for the day such as breadsticks, crisps, dips, crackers and cheese and also got homemade pizza rolls and sausage rolls.

There are only three of us for dinner including 2yo DS who will only pick during the day, but we'll have a string of visitors all day so will have plenty of snacks and drinks in for them too. Hope I've got enough!!

Perfectpeony · 27/11/2018 08:19

It’s so weird to read what other people eat! Mashed potato?!? Peas?! Grin

We have:

-A turkey crown with bacon on top- we put butter/ oil mix under the skin to get it crispy and use fresh herbs from the garden

  • honey roast parsnips
  • roast potatoes
  • sprouts with chestnuts/ bacon
  • pigs in blankets
  • meat stuffing
  • paxo (because I secretly love it!)
  • carrots
  • homemade cranberry sauce
  • cauliflower cheese
  • Yorkshire’s (I know it’s not posh but it’s awful not to!)
  • red cabbage slow cooked
  • turkey gravy - we cheat and buy the m and s ready made stuff

For starter we usually have smoked salmon blinis.

I can’t wait!

steppemum · 27/11/2018 08:20

we have sprouts, but no-one should HAVE to have them!

personally I don't like yorkshire with turkey, and think there is enough other stuff.
My parents insist on bread sauce, but I can take it or leave it.

I love sausage meat, my dad always stuffs one end of the turkey with chestnut stuffing, and then stuffs the neck with sausage meat, delicious (but it adds to cooking time)

I don't like cauliflower cheese on a plate with gravy, too many liquid bit sand too mushy, and we don't do mashed potatoes with a roast but you know what? Each to their own, if you like it, then do it!

We tend to eat around 2, rather than 3 or 4 pm, and then in the evening we have turkey and cranberry sandwiches, with sausage rolls, cheese and crackers, and fruit.

thighofrelief · 27/11/2018 08:26

Apparently 50% of people can only taste a bitter taste with sprouts, it's genetic. Bluergh, i still eat one because it's Christmas.

steppemum · 27/11/2018 08:26

bread pudding = cake like thing made with loads of raisins
bread sauce = white sauce that goes with chicken/turkey.

Bread sauce is basically made from breadcrumbs and milk which has been soaking in onions and bay leaves. Then it is all cooked in the oven.

If you like cooking, and have visitors all day, then home made sausage rolls are easy and very very tasty:

packet of puff pastry, roll out long strip about 4or 5 " wide.
mix sausage meat, finely chopped onion and fresh sage (chopped)
Put the meat mixture down the strip just to right of centre.
Fold other half of the strip over, and squash edges together with fork.

Cut the strip into tiny bit sized sausage rolls. Cook in hot oven for about 15 minutes (maybe more, I just guess)
Can be made ahead and frozen, warm up in oven straight from freezer. warning, you will need LOADS.

ShowOfHands · 27/11/2018 09:03

In my defence, I do peas because I have 12 people coming and some are quite awkward. One only eats peas, no other veg. My niece will be having bacon noodles actually. None of the other stuff. Christmas dinner in our house isn't an exercise in what should be done but one in what makes people happy.

In the evening we have cold meats, including chorizo, glazed ham, prosciutto, serrano ham, leftover turkey etc, olives, crackers, cheese, crudites, grapes, nice bread, crisps, nibbles, pork pie, mince pies, sausage rolls, pickles, chutneys, Christmas cake.

Perfectpeony · 27/11/2018 09:17

Show yep I agree Christmas dinner is about keeping everyone happy Smile

I am tempted to do roast beef this year but I got some funny looks when we mentioned it to the in laws! Maybe we will do both and live off the leftovers for two weeks. Grin
