What the hell goes on a christmas dinner??

Okay so:
Turkey (with bacon)
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing
Sausage meat
Honey roasted parsnips
Roast potatoes
Carrots
Green beans
Cranberry sauce
Yorkshire pudding???

Is that it? I've never made one myself and I'm panicking that I've forgotten something? Also, do you do Yorkshire pudding for Christmas? What do you eat the rest of the day? Help!

Plus sweetcorn (I know, I know, but don't knock it till you've tried it), it goes really well with turkey.

I make:
Turkey
Sausages (bacon is too salty)
Stuffing (pkt paxo plus half packet of sausagemeat combined!)
Roast potatoes
Root veg (carrots, parsnips, sweet potatoes, beetroot)
Peas
Brussels
Swede
Vegan thing for fussy ones
Cranberry and orange relish (homemade)
Shop bought gravy

Dessert is:
Xmas pud (vegan)
Lemon roulade (bought)
Mince pies
Jam roly poly or treacle steam pudding depending on oven vs hob juggling
Cream, custard and some disgusting vegan ice stuff (had it by accident, was vile)

Nobody likes sprouts, but there are certain things without which Christmas wouldn't be Christmas.

Your menu looks good. Personally I would skip the green beans and substitute sprouts instead. Don't forget Christmas pudding too!

Steamed Veg - peas/broccoli
cauliflower either steamed or baked in a cheese sauce
Roast meat - usually pork
Gravy/Apple sauce

Home made plum pudding
Custard/Ice Cream/Cream

You only need one type of stuffing- I make a sausage meat stuffing - de-skin some good quality sausages, mix with a couple of handfuls of breadcrumbs, some fresh parsley a bit extra pepper and then roll onto balls- bake in the oven until cooked through. Paxo? sod that it's horrible-like rehydrated sawdust from the botton of a hamsters cage! - yuk!

We have turkey, roast potatoes, sprouts, parsnips, mashed carrot and turnip, cranberry sauce, gravy and sausage meat stuffing as above.

Trifele for dessert and something for starters (which I haven't thought of yet)

I like Paxo, but you need to spread it across a large tin properly so it goes crunchy at the edges.

we go overboard on veg - there is only usually 4 of us but besides a main meat (sometimes turkey sometimes beef) there is stuffing (we do like apricot in ours), pigs in blankets and sliced ham from christmas eve, and then carrots, peas, parsnips, carrot and swede mash, mash, roasties, broccoli, cauli and there might also be red cabbage left from christmas eve ham meal plus of course gravy, cranberry sauce or horseraddish and even sometimes mustard.

roast chicken
veggie sausages.
roast potatoes (mash or boiled?)
sprouts.
other boiled veg that you like (children have sweetcorn and peas)
roast veg (eg: choose from: courgette, parsnips, carrots, sweet potatoes, peppers, onions, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes)
stuffing, (two sorts here as I like both)
cranberry sauce, lots and lots of cranberry sauce. (this is why I have mumsnet magic chickens as I have a bit of chicken with my cranberry sauce)

gravy made from meat juices.

cauliflower cheese may be made to add variety sometimes, (usually broccoli and cauli)

yorkshire puddings (as I love them and we do not normally have roast as we eat mainly vegetarian food)

just cook what you like. and other peoples must haves (as long as they do not present you with a long list. )

buy an over sized turkey (14lb) for us 3 at home and once the Christmas meal was cooked and served with the trimmings (that you pretty much listed but with sprouts not beans) then that turkey and leftovers feeds us for the next 3 days of the Christmas week.
We love it and not having to cook anything else for the rest of festive holiday.

Saves a lot of faffing and expense for one parent to organise and cook extra meals especially if you're not into starters/ big hams/ sides of beef/ prawn rings etc.

There will be enough sausage rolls, mince pies, red cabbage (all made and frozen to same time ahead) /chocolate coins/cake and crisps being eaten around anyway so don't worry about feeding in the evening. Get some salad items in to break up the stodge factor.

It's your Christmas too: do as you like to save stress. Wink

Eww what’s with the paxo, surely for Christmas you could branch out and make a good stuffing, that’s one of the best bits of Christmas dinner!!!

We have...

A bird of some description (probs turkey this year)
Goose fat roast potatoes
Braised red cabbage
Sprouts with pancetta and chestnuts
Stuffing (sausage meat, breadcrumbs, caramelised onions, chestnuts and fresh sage)
Celeriac purée (divine!!! Grin)
Chantonay carrots cooked in stock and butter and Sage.
Pigs in blankets.

I love sprouts. Very necessary too, for bubble and squeak with pickles & cold meats on Boxing Day. If you don't like them much I second trying them roasted, as it sweetens them and makes them much more palatable. If boiling get the freshest ones you can, chuck them into to boiling water and don't overcook them. They should still be pretty sweet. Also stir fried with ginger and garlic is lovely.

We put sausagemeat in the bird's bum and I make sage and onion stuffing separately. I like cauliflower cheese but not essential. Bread sauce I would consider essential. My BIL needs Yorkshire's in his lunch, apparently; that's fine by me but a new thing for our family.

If doing a starter I always like prawn cocktail.

For some reason there's always pavlova for people as an alternative dessert to Christmas pud and mince pies with brandy butter & pouring cream. Our routine is similar to crispbutty's.

Cauliflower cheese seems popular! Love it but never had with Christmas dinner?
Also have never tried bread sauce, is this an English thing? Never see it much where I am in Scotland.

bread sauce is an acquired taste a bit too 'clovey' for me but i guess it's personal taste. Delia made a rather unctuous version i remember watching.
