Hiding Christmas presents

Where does everyone hide their Christmas presents? I am currently using the large suitcase under my bed but imagine I'll run out of space soon.
Does anyone have any ingenious ideas to share?
I don't think my children (12, 8 and 3) would go hunting for presents, but they're pretty inquisitive so my hiding places need to be pretty good!!

So far we've just kept them in cardboard boxes in our room. Dcs are 4 and 2. The 4 year old has never stumbled across them but the 2 year old is a whirlwind so I might have to start hiding them better!
The attic? They're getting bikes this year which will be sent and hidden at the house of the relative who we're spending Christmas with.

I think my mum uses to put some on top of her very large wardrobe. It has a lip all the way around the top so you can't see flat things.

WipsGlitter · 02/11/2018 10:48

We have a wardrobe like that too! It hides stuff really well.

The stress of hiding a bike last year was unbelievable

siakcaci · 02/11/2018 10:50

I would expect a 12yo to look.

I have a lockable linen cupboard

pouraglasshalffull · 02/11/2018 11:02

When I was younger I used to look high and wide for my Christmas presents but never found them- I still don't know where my mum used to hide them!

Warning for you all: your children probably will try and slyly look and tell you nothing about it even if they do find the presents. Children are very sneaky so hide them well!

Boohissmiss · 02/11/2018 11:19

I put them in black bags and put them in the back room . The kids think they are rubbish bags and don’t go near. Just make sure you don’t mistake them for actual rubbish

reluctantbrit · 02/11/2018 11:21

Normally in a cupboard in the spare bedroom which is the “things we like to keep but ” storage solutio. I would have thought DD didn’t look last year but I think she may have secretly looked.

Be careful with hiding too good. My mum did this and virtually every year she panicked in Christmas Eve as she couldn’t find a present and more than once we got it days later.

One year it was so bad she called me to search as she had to finish the last of her shopping, she just said “leave it on the bed and no peeking” . It came out it was my main present, would have been a bit of a let down. I think I was 14-15.

youngestisapsycho · 02/11/2018 11:22

My kids are older and do go looking so I wrap them as soon as I buy them and put in the top of my wardrobe.

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 02/11/2018 11:23

Oh yes - every year on MN there is someone who has lost or thrown away a black bag of presents. Personally I don’t see how it could be possible, but it happens every Christmas so it must be!

SymphonyofShadows · 02/11/2018 11:24

If they are shopping bag size I hang them under coats on a hanger in the wardrobe

SixToEightInchesOfSnow · 02/11/2018 11:27

We have built in waredrobes with another cupboard over the top. Dh’s stores suitcases and mine stores presents. There’s no chance ds (9) could reach them even if he wanted to!

Stompythedinosaur · 02/11/2018 11:28

In previous years I've kept them on top of a tall wardrobe and in a lockable trunk on the landing. Everything has been moved around this year so neither is now a possibility, so I think they will have to go in a box in the loft. I am actually planning on wrapping quite soon so that if they do get found they won't see what they are.

WoodAnemone · 02/11/2018 11:29

Two of our neighbours used to keep each other's Christmas presents in their garages. Obviously it worked because they were close but we always thought it was a great idea. We never needed to hide presents much as our eldest loves surprises and would help to guard the hoard. Lucky really as I've been known to find hidden presents years later.

CantWaitToRetire · 02/11/2018 11:34

My mum lives very near to me. I used to hide them at her house and the bonus was she would wrap them too (she enjoyed it). I'd collect them, or my dad would deliver them back, late on Christmas Eve.

ifoundthebread · 02/11/2018 11:37

Either in the loft (luckily we now have a walk in), my mother's house or my grandads garage.

greenlynx · 02/11/2018 11:38

I don’t wrap them until the very last moment and keep them on top of wardrobe or behind DH’s books and files in the boxes so you can’t see anything behind front row of books. I would struggle to find space for wrapped presents.

PtangyangkipperbangOi · 02/11/2018 11:54

When my kids were small we had a house with split U shaped staors and a storage area under the little half way landing. We got it boxed in but with a sliding panel. We hid presents for 4 kids under there for 7 years and as we put the hoover and carpet shampooer in front of it nobody ever had an inkling. These days I collect irregular choice shoes, and my bedroom ceiling is super high. I stack presents on the 6 door wardrobe and build a wall of shoe boxes around them. As kids get older the size of presents shrinks massively so that's the perfect solution and they would never think to look there.

Alanamackree · 02/11/2018 14:42

I have a very organized attic with big labeled boxes for storage. Some of them are empty or just have a thin layer of what they say they contain. There are also dark corners, and with a matt black cover thrown over, things become virtually invisible.

I have a set of boxes in my wardrobe with a couple of inches behind so I have a bag there to stash things quickly until they can be transferred to the attic.

I wrap when I stash so that if the dc do discover something I might get away with just changing wrapping paper.

The dc help hoover my car on or near Christmas Eve so they know my boot is empty. DH takes them off to visit mil on Christmas Eve while I prep the veg. I transfer the stash to the car while they’re out. I usually send them up to the attic to find the Christmas table cloths later in the day. So they know there are no gifts there either.

DH also has no idea where I keep things. Wink

Last year they were under our ottaman bed. Kids were totally confused as it wasnt the usal place. This year though bar the yougest (1) knows the drill so they are all wrapped in the bedroom cupboard. They know they are there but wrapped so cant go looking. Will have to rethink soon before 1yr old clocks on.

Witchofwisteria · 02/11/2018 14:54

I hide mine at work in the spare office! Ask your boss if they wouldn't mind you stashing them at work?

I've also had my mum store some bits for me at her house before I worked at my current job!

Suitcase is another good one that I do at home and I also hide presents underneath our bed (which is a storage bed and way too heavy for a 4 year old to lift up).

Could also try the shed if you know its not damp?

Presents hidden in boxes and put on the top of the wardrobe is another good one.

Angelcd · 02/11/2018 16:25

Ontop of my wardrobe my childrens ones are & a cupboard in our room, ive ran out of space now tho so other people's are piled in a corner in my room.my children havent even noticed them x

Bumbumtaloo · 02/11/2018 16:37

We store ours in plain site and up until now neither have gone looking - 9 at Christmas and 6.

Laundry cupboard
2 cupboards in kitchen
Boxes behind sofa

Our our places. Some in boxes and bags others just on the shelf. We are incredibly lucky that if they have gone into said cupboard - no need apart from possibly the laundry cupboard - they simply haven’t noticed.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/11/2018 16:50

Ours are on top of the wardrobes hidden by a Gro Blind, or just in bags on top. The kids aren't quite tall enough (4 and 5) to go hunting up there. I also have some in my wardrobe.

When they're older I may have to reconsider depending on how much like me nosey they are!
