Board games that are a bit different.

I want to buy my DC (9 and 13) another board game. We have a few that they really enjoy and there are others that have been binned or passed on as they didn't capture their interest.

I just came across this link which is quite interesting and was wondering if anyone had come across some of these games and had any feedback.

We got Settlers of Catan last year. DCs (7 & 9) love it, picked it up very quickly. What they also especially like is that we've recently discovered the online app with sound effects - a little thing, but makes a big difference to the atmosphere of the game. You can also get lots of expansion kits and stuff.

Hi, There are huge number of new games out there that aren't just monopoly or cluedo, of the games listed pandemic and Carcassone are the most interesting. However, you're best bet though for finding something interesting is to find a games shop near youwww.findyourgamestore.co.uk/ and asking the staff who are usually very knowledgable, about age appropriate games.

Labyrinth? Our family have been known to get quite competitive and the game doesn't last too long

I love Catan but may be a bit dry for that age group. King of Tokyo is really good fun and not hard to play - you each play as a monster trying to destroy the city and each other. Quirkle is a bit Scrabble like but with symbols and colours, easy to pick up. Forbidden island or forbidden desert are great co op games, as is pandemic. We play a lot of board games, and not sure that list is the best!

Also bought beasts of balance for Xmas. It's a combination of a physical game with an app. Not the cheapest, but looks amazing and would probably engage the children really well.

Seconding Settler of Catan

Ihaventgottimeforhis what’s the app called? Sounds great Smile

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 10/10/2018 11:55

@Ginazon it's from Syrinscape - I think it was about 99p or something?

You get sounds for sheep, timber, the robber and the knight and stuff, as well as background music and things. The kids find it absolutely hilarious, time and time and time again Hmm Grin

Oh, here it is syrinscape.com/store/117-catan/

My recommendations would be Ticket to ride, camel up or 7wonders.

7 wonders takes a bit of getting used to but it is the best game ever!

BlueChampagne · 11/10/2018 13:48

King of New York (like King of Tokyo but a bit more to it).
Smash Up is another favourite in our house.
Isle of Skye?
The London Game?
Revolution?
The Hobbit board game?
My 8yo loves Catan more than my 11 yo!

The Board Game Geek website is useful for info before you buy.

OldGreyBoots · 11/10/2018 19:20

7 Wonders is amazing!

Curious2468 · 11/10/2018 19:43

We are hooked on the dungeons and dragons game lords of waterdeep atm!

WillowtheWasp · 11/10/2018 19:48

Dixit

stepmummamumma · 11/10/2018 19:50

I played a game called 'Ticket to ride' with my stepson and we LOVE it!! Highly recommend!!

Ignoramusgiganticus · 11/10/2018 19:52

Really Nasty Horse Racing Game - only if they can take having nasty cards given to them though.

Stompythedinosaur · 11/10/2018 20:00

We love Settlers of Catan (junior version is better for 5yo dd2) and ticket to ride (again there's a junior version for younger kids). Other hits are dobble, labyrinth and 5 second rule. 7yo dd1 loves playing hive and tatsu too.

PegLegAntoine · 11/10/2018 20:08

My general rule for games is that I don’t get them if they are in regular toy shops. As usually they only stock crap ones other than classics like scrabble and labyrinth. I am a self confessed game snob.

Ticket to ride is a great “entry” game into the world of “different” games.

Angelcd · 11/10/2018 21:07

I got jumanji the board game from smyths was under £20 .keeping it for xmas eve x

Danteinferno · 11/10/2018 21:51

Carcassone, ticket to ride, pandemic are all great choices. Codenames is also another good one we enjoy playing

DubaiismyBlackpool · 11/10/2018 21:58

Some good suggestions already!

Pictureka - I think that's how you spell it is fun.

Mexican train - not a board game but dominoes is pretty good.

Avoid the Code Names picture version, its not very good. The original is fab.

Ligretto is a fun card game as is The Great Dalmuti, but they work best with about 6 people playing.

Danteinferno · 11/10/2018 21:59

Dominion (card game) Is also great!

DammitOedipus · 11/10/2018 22:00

Munchkin is fantastic. Same with Ticket to Ride. DH and I love board games, and these two are always fun.

DubaiismyBlackpool · 11/10/2018 22:02

Forgot to mention, we like Carcassonne more than Settlers of Catan. Very easy to play and different every time.

Goldenphoenix · 11/10/2018 22:03

Our favourites are-
Firefly
Dread Pirate (gorgeous cloth, glass pieces and treasure)
Raceway

All are brilliant

LilithTheKitty · 11/10/2018 22:08

Another vote for Dixit here.

AlsoKnownAsMillicent · 11/10/2018 22:23

Survive - Escape from Atlantis is loved by my 3DSs (8,10 & 13). Good fun, strategic, you're encouraged to make allies, can get incredibly vindictive Grin
