Board games that are a bit different.

I want to buy my DC (9 and 13) another board game. We have a few that they really enjoy and there are others that have been binned or passed on as they didn't capture their interest.

I just came across this link which is quite interesting and was wondering if anyone had come across some of these games and had any feedback.

Exploding kittens

4forkssake Scotland Yard is such a brilliant game.
Such a simple premise but it gets so tense! Also lots of opportunities for character acting, and great for geography too.

WitWicky · 12/10/2018 10:38

Definitely consider ticket to ride- the Europe version is great and really helps with geography too! Also a big fan or Carcassonne although I find the scoring tricky- you can get various expansion packs to keep it interesting.

GlowWine · 12/10/2018 11:18

We love Ubongo. The 'original' version. Can get quite competitive, but you can play at two levels of difficulty to make it easier for younger players. Also being the fastest at solving the logic puzzles does not mean you end up winning in the end.

scotland yard

firawla · 12/10/2018 12:44

Scotland Yard and pandemic are great

namechangedtoday15 · 12/10/2018 12:47

Ticket to Ride. Started with the Europe game. Love it so much we have almost every variation (American / Africa / UK / Rails & Sails). Children are 9 and 13 - have played it pretty much every weekend for more than a year!!

BevBrook · 12/10/2018 12:51

We like: Munchkin, Carcassone, Catan, King of Tokyo, Forbidden Island and Forbidden Desert, Boss Monster. DS also likes an insanely complicated one called The Captain is Dead.

Asj0405 · 12/10/2018 16:34

Can anyone let me know which of these are suitable for a 7 year old? I have already got her the exploding kittens but would like to get a couple more. She's not quite 7 but nearly there

DubaiismyBlackpool · 13/10/2018 07:46

@Asj0405 Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, ticket to tide, ligretto, Mexican train, Pictureka are all good games for children 6 and up.

catwithflowers · 13/10/2018 08:00

We love Catan (and I play the online app version most days 😁) and I've bought Ticket to Ride, Europe and Carcassonne as family board games for Christmas this year. Will investigate Scotland Yard!

Asj0405 · 13/10/2018 08:37

@dubaiismyblackpool thank you Smile i have already bought ticket to ride for her older sister so good to know she will be able to join in with that. I'll probably get the settlers of catan and Carcassonne as well then as they seem to have been mentioned a few times.
Thanks for the advice

@frenchfancy
@oldgreyboots

We have 7 wonders and played it once. Please tell me what's so great about it!

Momasita · 13/10/2018 09:15

Name change we have only played ticket a few times but its brilliant isn't it.

frenchfancy · 13/10/2018 09:57

@Momasita
7 wonders is great for lots of reasons.

  • it changes every time you play it as the Wonder you are playing and the cards you get change your tactics.
  • the players play cards at the same time so you are not waiting for your turn.
  • You Don't really know who has won until the end so you all keep playing
  • it is relatively quick, a game takes about 45 minutes
  • you can get extension packs so once you are good it can get more challenging

The way the game is played is very different from normal games so it takes a couple of goes to get into it but once you are used to it it is great.

Momasita · 13/10/2018 10:04

Thanks French. Did laugh at more challenging extension packs though! It's already super challenging.

AnneOfCleavage · 13/10/2018 10:21

I don't think anybody has mentioned Risk as yet. Quite competitive but really fun - good family game as well as for two people.

OldGreyBoots · 13/10/2018 10:21

French said it better than I could! I particularly like how quick it is to play; my friends hold a lot of board game nights and compared to the stuff they like to play, 7 Wonders did seem easy to pick up!
I'm not sure who you're playing it with though - I've only ever played it with all adults, so I'm not sure how well children would take to it.

BrisaOtonal · 15/10/2018 17:25

We have Risk already but if you don't, it is a great game.

Probably not for your youngest, but Chameleon is great. Not a board game as such but easy to play and works well when everyone is sitting around after dinner. Definitely recommend for teens to adults.

MyNameIsJane · 15/10/2018 17:35

Dixit is good too!

mathanxiety · 15/10/2018 17:40

It's not quite a board game - it involves pieces, a board, and strategy though - but all of my DCs loved a game called Blokus at that age.

Sethis · 15/10/2018 17:40

Splendour

Bang!!

Munchkin

King of Tokyo (again)

Galaxy Truckers might be a little complicated for the small one, but maybe in a year or two.

haba · 18/10/2018 08:45

Another vote for Ticket to Ride! Just a fab game.

We like Machi Koro, King of Tokyo, Takenoko, battle sheep too.
