Who are kids presents from? Santa or you?

Couldn't summarise that well in a title. My ds is now 5 so he's going to be more aware this Christmas about how things work.

How do you explain to your kids who presents are from? When I was a child my mum said Santa delivers them but mummy's/daddy's send them off to him. I think she wanted us to know that they contribute to them.

I know others say certain presents are from Santa and others from them, like a particular gift or the stocking presents.

Feel like I need to get my script together before the questions start!

Stockings and one or two main presents are from santa. The rest are from us but santa delivers them. I think it's important for kids to know we've worked and saved to buy them presents.

Santa brings a few modest presents and a stocking opened at some ridiculous hour in the morning. Big present is under the tree from Mum and Dad opened when the rest of the family gather round to exchange presents. I'm not letting some fat bloke in a red suit get all the credit!

Santa presents are from Santa.

We give a small present (usually a book), and relatives and friends give presents which they are thanked for.

But Santa gets all the credit for any gifts he brings.

I feel sad when people talk about not wanting Santa to get the credit. Young Children don’t care or respect you more or less based on what presents you get them. But they do feel excitement and magic when they think Santa has brought them.

I do a mixture. The main thing they’ve wished/asked for from Santa, then the rest probably half me and half Santa. And stocking from Santa.

Stocking from Father Christmas and all the present trees from whoever bought them (they are delivered by Father Christmas).

It isn't to do with Santa getting the credit, but more a sense of fairness. Otherwise why does Santa bring one child new pyjamas and a book in one house, but a bike and an iPad to another? There is no much emphasis on "naughty or nice" that I would hate a child to think they had been naughty or assume a classmate had been naughty because they didn't get loads of presents at Christmas.

Its a bit complicated to say you send them to santa and he brings them back. How does that work with their presents to you, is Santa too busy to deal with them?

The stocking is from santa sometimes includes a big in size gift from the list but fuck me if I'm buying a flippin IPad I would want DC to know it was my hard graft that paid for it and everything else (under the tree) is from you.

Santa brings the stocking fillers. Wrapped presents are all labelled from whoever got them.

When DD arrived we actually didn't say anything, FC was just assumed. When she started writing wish lists we normally got her these presents from him unless it was something he refuses to give like the year she asked for an ipad. He wrote a letter that this is something only parents do.

I think she was 4 when she suddenly asked what DH and I will get her for Christmas as we were out shopping for presents for the grandparents. From then onwards we made sure there were FC presents in one paper and the one we claimed "ownership" for in another. We normally get her things which go with the FC presents like additional playmobil sets for the large castle he brought or just surprises.

The stocking is from him as well but only comes with 4-5 items, nothing big but always surprises.

Father Christmas only delivers. Everyone send him money to help pay for the presents.

This came about because we always have a huge clearout of toys before Christmas and take the good condition ones to the charity shops. When my eldest DD asked why we did it I got a bit muddled and said it was for the children’s who’s parents/families couldn’t afford to buy them presents. She then went on to say but doesn’t Father Christmas bring them? And the story kind of evolved from there. We also don’t do the naughty or nice.

From people of course because there is no Santa.

Father Christmas also only delivers for children, it would be too much for him to deliver adult presents too - this evolved from DD asking too many questions and again me speaking before thinking and said the thing we had just bought was for daddy.

Small stocking presents from Santa. Rest from us.
I want the kids to learn about giving gifts to each other as opposed to just getting a pile from Santa.
Also not all families can afford big presents and it’s easier and more considerate if Santa gives smaller things to all as opposed to some getting bigger Santa gifts.

Stocking full of cheap shit from santa and one decentish present from me. I'm pretty skint and buying for 3 is expensive so it's all usually pretty shit. Thank God for my genourous extended family.

Main present from us (£30-50) then 6 little presents (£3-10 each) and stocking (sweets, fruit and maybe £1 toys) from Santa. Overall the Santa pile is more impressive on the day, but our present is more memorable and will last longer.

DS is still little though, so may have to re visit budget in a few years, but will stick with this format as I don't think a bigger pile would bring any more happiness, everything would just get less attention.

I tell mine (3 and 5) that mummy and Daddy send money to Santa with their list and Santa then makes the toys and brings them on Christmas Eve. But there is a spending limit, and he has to stick to Mummy and Daddy's budget. So mummy and daddy pay but Santa brings the presents.

I've been trying to teach them where money comes from and the value of it or they'd just be constantly 'I want this, I want that'. Also helps them to understand why they might not get everything on their list.

We send the money to Santa in our house

Santa is essentially a glitzy postman here, if presents are here on Xmas morning Santa's bought them.

If people turn up with gifts we tell the kids that they must've missed the post deadline. We've told DD already that we've sent our gifts to santa, and that he also sneaks extras in too.
