Thought I’d do a ‘how to’ for a couple of things people often post about not being sure of

To do click links you do this put link in here then a space then the name or phrase you want to go with the link . Don’t put a space between the start of the link and the and then last word and the like I have or it won’t work but I had to to demonstrate.

To follow the thread without using up a post to mark place you can click on ‘watch this thread’ at the top of the first post.

No affiliate links please.

Second message has a few links and info which I’ll slowly build up, let me k ow if there’s anything you’d like me to add to it Thanks

The thing that puzzles me about furoshiki is ... do you get the cloth back? Or is it effectively a part of the present?

DanceDanceDance80 · 24/09/2018 13:59

Just been confirmed smyths spend 50 save 10 starts tomorrow.

Someaddedsugar · 24/09/2018 13:59

Does the Happyland advent calendar ever go in the sale? I spotted it with a pound off in the recent Happyland event but didn’t buy it and now wondering whether I should have just gone for it!

FoofFighter · 24/09/2018 14:15

Could somebody kindly link the gaming headphones mentioned above please? My mn app is being a dick and won't let me scroll past yesterday evening posts 🙄

SilkieAndMoonface · 24/09/2018 14:18

Thank you PurpleTigerLove and JammieBammie, I shall pass on the link to them, and JammieBammie and CarrotVan for furoshiki suggestions.

NoSquirrels I was planning on wrapping in cloth for DC and DH and probably DM, DF and DSis who would all happily give back the wrapping for re-use next year (and would approve of my motive), but keeping on using paper for other people (which lets me keep doing fancy paper folding on wrapping paper too). As DC and DH are those I buy most for, that is still a big reduction in our paper usage I reckon.

Ohh h forgot about beer soap it was me that posted the link not had mine here

BestofLuck · 24/09/2018 14:42

Went to Costco to pick up a Lego advent calendar. Didn't get one in the end as they've put the price up from last year. However there were lots of great looking gift ideas, including the Sylvanian Families Cedar Terrace (comes with at least one figure plus some furniture) for £29 Seems like a bargain as it's £60 in Debenhams. Had a lovely looking wooden castle for same price plus a good Lego clock and watch set.

To anyone that’s going to buy or has bought the alder hey merchandise, I’ve just collected mine and it feels a little thin and not that good quality. Not too bothered as the money goes to charity.

BestofLuck · 24/09/2018 14:53

@jammiebammie would your daughter like a 3d jigsaw puzzle? My daughter had one of Big Ben which she enjoyed. Can get ones of trainers that can be used as pen holders, etc too.

Singingitoverandoverandover · 24/09/2018 15:04

jammy try flipside, simon air and simon optix? Smythshave them all. Also this is new name thats smell game 13years plus. Could be a good laugh at xmas!

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 24/09/2018 15:20

Jammiebammie - for your 16 yo how about a cheap origami set (try The Works?) or one of those lego-like but miniature brick sets - I think they're called Nano bricks but you can get cheaper sets on Ali Express etc

I bought the DC some Minion ones a few years ago

rosablue · 24/09/2018 15:21

@Jammiebammie Does your dd like crafty things? Something like an origami set could be nice - places like the works and the Book People have cheap sets or how to books - or you can pick up the right paper cheaply on ebay (or even just a cheap square memo pad from the supermarket to practice on as well as some nicer bits of paper).

It's quite relaxing and fun to do, whilst some books are childish and full of animals and water bombs (ok she might like that if she has younger siblings she can use them on!) there are some lovely more artistic ones too that you can make flowers, boxes, Japanese good luck cranes, all sorts of stuff. It's quite a fun thing to do with bits of paper too at school or uni or in later life - to turn an old wrapper into a bird or a flower or a penguin can either entertain little ones or get conversations started with older people too...

There are also things like origami with different names that are similar sorts fo things to do with paper models but different because they use scissors or more than one bit of paper and so on, all equally fun and something to do on christmas day.

If that's not of interest to her, what about a book about making simple jewellery - you can get charms and cord to make nice bracelets very cheaply on ebay, would that be something she would enjoy doing? Maybe a simple tool kit for doing some of the simple things like wire bending to add charms onto things. this is just the first thing that came up - 100 silver charms and I'm sure that if you look you'll find some of things that she is interested in or more her style - but they're cheap and cheerful, with some cord and instructions she could make nice bits and bobs.

(And if you look on ebay with more than aminute to spare, there are similar lots of christmas themed charms if anyone wants cheap decorations for adding to parcels or making christmas bracelets or necklaces for school christmas fetes or crackers or presents)

Jammiebammie · 24/09/2018 15:39

Thanks so much everyone for the ideas for dd - we have a million craft things here but origami isn’t something I think we have (unless we have it in a klutz book!) We’ve had lots of games, 3D puzzles etc and actually bought simon optix which was overlooked last year, I don’t want to spend money for something that will just sit iyswim. What’s that smell looks like a lot of fun though!

Jammiebammie · 24/09/2018 15:40

Sorry for not tagging, don’t think Mn is working for me today!

woodwaj · 24/09/2018 16:48

Can anyone recommend a thors hammer suitable for a 5 year old? I saw one in smyths the other day and it didn't look impressive!

Jammiebammie · 24/09/2018 17:22

Dd has this hammer woodwaj, she loves that it rumbles and makes sounds - I’m sure we got it at smyths though so may be the one you didn’t like?

LokiBear · 24/09/2018 17:46

I think my dd2 would like the pull and play noo noo but I really do not want to pay £39.99 for it. If anyone sees it cheaper please let me know!

Unihorn · 24/09/2018 18:07

@LokiBear how strange, I've just left B&M and it was definitely either £25 or possibly £15! Also had lots of other Teletubbies stuff.

OhHolyFuck · 24/09/2018 18:08

Ds1 would love that smell game but will be nearly 8 at Christmas and it's for 14+, does anyone know if there's any younger based games like that? Bit of a running joke how good his nose is!

CarrotVan · 24/09/2018 18:32

“Pull and play Noo Noo” sounds really rude

Kraggle · 24/09/2018 18:51

Jammie have you thought of something like a tamagotchi for your teen? It’s silly but cute and fun to play with and not too expensive. Think the mini ones are out currently but full sized ones are due out soon.

LokiBear · 24/09/2018 18:52

Brilliant, thank you! (Agreed - it does sound rude!)

ElephantCostumeGirl · 24/09/2018 19:33

Just ordered an organic baby blanket from Mori for £1 (+£4.95 p&p) through the O2 Priority app.

I've got loads of friends with babies this year, so would be good for any of them!
