Right-tinsel, yes or no?

And if yes, colour co ordinated or what ever?
(I'm a no. I once offended teenage dd by saying tinsel was common. Blush in my defence it was at the end of a long day Christmas shopping spending hours in topshop, urban outfitterers and primark, I needed a coffee a big drink-- and it was the straw that broke the reindeers back". I've mellowed a bit now, but can't find any I like)

I was in blissful ignorance about how common I am until I joined Mumsnet Hmm.

I've put the poxy cursed tree up. It looks shit. It's crying out, pleading, begging for a bit of silver tinsel.
I've given it over 100 lights, a sparkly tree skirt, brand new baubles but it does need a bit of ye olde tinsel.

My name is Peppercorn and I am a Tinsellite.

This is so funny.
We don't have any tinsel, like to go more old fashioned with the tree. But as DS gets older if he decides he wants some we'll tinsel it up. Christmas is all about fun for the kids anyway and I wouldn't want to let 'style' get in the way of a bit of fun!

Red and gold (I lost that battle) - what am i - a lannister?

ineedwine99 · 04/12/2017 16:20

Yes, red and gold, pushed far back into the tree so the lights just catch it to give some sparkle (my theme is red/gold/green)

SatsukiKusakabe · 04/12/2017 19:01

I don’t know queenie - do you always pay your debts?

I like red, green and gold, and will probably never be persuaded to anything else.

Lidl I got those tiny wire lights last year (they were for a party, but they arrived late) They are amazing, bright, but virtually invisible.

Well as I heard someone say today putting a tree up in the corner of your lounge and sticking twinkly lights on it is a pretty mad thing to do when you think about it so I am not going to over think this one. I tried to do minimalist/classy/coordinated last year and it felt like something was missing so this year I will down a few glasses of Prosecco and chuck it all on in hoping it looks deliberately random.

God no, I think it’s really tacky. Dp would cover the place in it though. I’m one of those annoying people who has a colour scheme and likes the tree to be perfect though.

DamsonGin · 05/12/2017 06:56

Yes definitely. It reminds me of my childhood, partly because some of it is forty years old. I like to think of it as vintage, rather than tatty, and it compliments the assortment of child-made random baubles and things, each of which has a happy memory behind it. The nativity figures have seen better days too but then they are definitely older than me. It sounds a bit shit but does actually look very lovely when it's rearranged after the children's efforts and carefully arranged.

fromtheshires · 05/12/2017 07:22

Not on the tree as I have beads which are easier to make drops with between branches if you follow.

I do have some white tinsel (matte not shiny) around the base of the tree to simulate snow, but is it really tinsel if it's not shiny?

I sometimes put a chunky gold strand of tinsel around the mirror if I can be bothered to decorate the hallway once the tree has been arranged and re arranged.

julessussex · 05/12/2017 07:25

‘Tis the season to be jolly tea la la la laaa la la last laaa...

I just let the kids do the tree and don’t touch it (they would be hurt if I moved it all around)

Does it really matter on the grand scale of things?

But it will never be perfect without tinsel. Mwahahaha! Grin

Taffeta · 05/12/2017 08:52

I think silver tinsel wound around the trunk can add real depth to a tree that can’t be mustered with anything else.

I don’t think it’s tacky at all, if done right. Beads and bows OTOH, yuk!!
