Right-tinsel, yes or no?

And if yes, colour co ordinated or what ever?
(I'm a no. I once offended teenage dd by saying tinsel was common. Blush in my defence it was at the end of a long day Christmas shopping spending hours in topshop, urban outfitterers and primark, I needed a coffee a big drink-- and it was the straw that broke the reindeers back". I've mellowed a bit now, but can't find any I like)

no no no

StarAboveParvati · 02/12/2017 22:38

Yes - but only on the tree! Silver or gold only though, and pushed deep in towards the trunk of the REAL tree so that the lights and baubles sparkle and twinkle. Also, have enough of it so that you can wind it though in neat layers. It's supposed to look frost and ice on the tree, and it's not the same without it.

73kittycat73 · 03/12/2017 01:03

Absolutely yes. Xmas Grin On the tree, around my bookcase, dresser, TV unit, computer monitor and desk. Can't have Christmas without tinsel!

elQuintoConyo · 03/12/2017 08:25

Nope. Not a single strand. It gives me the heeby jeebies.

Actually tell a lie. We have some wound round the upstairs balcony with a couple of giant silver bows. Always makes me smile when driving past it on the bus. I'd love some light-up grazing reindeer, but that's not going to happen

strugglingtodomybest · 03/12/2017 08:33

Tinsel is common? Never heard that before. Says who?

Tinsel IS Christmas. A tree without tinsel isn't fully dressed. And never coordinated - that's so common Wink

SatsukiKusakabe · 03/12/2017 11:00

Yes! Our room looks like a 70s/80s time warp and I have no shame.

I’ve seen friends’ trees that look like a John Lewis display, really lovely. Ours looks like the pop-up shop next door, but it’s about the kids at the moment and they love it.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 03/12/2017 11:13

Was me Struggling I think I was having some John Lewis/Martha Stewart fantasy. Xmas Blush
I did find this beauty which is going on the work secret Santa box. (Yes, I did post about this before) Nothing says Christmas like vaguely knobby holly berries.

No tinsel in the house, but at work yes!

Aweektilltheseason · 03/12/2017 11:23

No tinsel is not common at all, in fact I'd say opposite. The tinsel fee house, could be said to be common Grin

HopeAndJoy16 · 03/12/2017 11:34

We always buy some for the cat, it's her favourite ever toy, and it usually sits in a pile by the fire so she can roll in it. I've had to hide it this year though as the baby is obsessed with ripping it apart and eating it. We don't have any up for decoration though.

NellyTimes · 03/12/2017 12:13

I'd rather have a "common" looking tree with tinsel than a boring as shit colour themed one.

HolgerDanske · 03/12/2017 12:39

I can’t stand the judgy and smug connotations of labelling it common.

I haven’t used tinsel for years, since my children were little, because I favoured a more restrained approach in general. And I’m from Scandinavia where it’s not really much of a thing. I definitely err toward a more Scandi, pared back look.

But this year I want my tree to be cosy, homely, rich and brimming over with joyfulness, I want it to twinkle in that special way that only tinsel does. And I also want it to feel a bit retro, a bit harking back to the past and bringing to mind childhood magic and wonderment. For me, tinsel is right this year. And so that is what I’m going to have.

walnutwhip88 · 03/12/2017 13:03

It's ok if it's thin and dark gold/dark orange i think. Tinsel like chunky blue or silver is horrendous though. I think anything blue on an xmas tree is a big no no

tinytemper66 · 03/12/2017 13:15

No tinsel in this house!

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 03/12/2017 13:55

For Holger and Nelly -I've already said it was a dick thing to say. And actually, the reality of my tree is pretty far from designer-we have a random collection of old glass ornaments (rescued when dp deemed them old fashioned), new quite tacky glass ones and weird shit collected over the years. No colour theme, no co ordination.

How do you decorate a house without tinsel?
I don't want holes in my walls etc and have no idea how to make the house christmassy without tinsel.

I've draped it over the kallax, the tv unit, the sideboard, the shoe rack and the banister 🎄
We've got stockings, a snow globe and a couple of Christmas ornaments up too.

goose1964 · 03/12/2017 15:40

There must be tinsel, not just on the tree but on the dressers too

HolgerDanske · 03/12/2017 15:42

I wasn’t actually commenting directly at you or anyone else, I just know how it tends to go on these threads. Wink

I have only ever used tinsel on the tree, I wouldn’t use tinsel around the house or on staircases/picture frames/Windows/etc. It’s all good though, whatever makes you happy is what you should do.

strugglingtodomybest · 03/12/2017 15:46

I love the tacky old glass baubles, they're the best! Honestly, I'm so far from being a glitter and sparkle girl in every day life, but as soon as it comes to Xmas decorations I want the full works.

VioletCharlotte · 03/12/2017 15:57

Yes. Tinsel makes your tree sparkly and glittery when the lights reflect off it. Mine is gold.

LidlAngel · 03/12/2017 16:00

YES YES YES YES TES. Don't understand why people don't like it, and how do you hide the tree light wires without it?

Floralnomad · 03/12/2017 16:04

No tinsel on our tree , but it is round the bannisters and also around the necks of our polar bear and stag heads that are on the wall . We also have tinsel trees and candy canes hanging on the windows .

LockedOutOfMN · 03/12/2017 16:06

I don't put tinsel on our tree but no problem with anyone else using it. When I was a child I thought tinsel was amazing and would stroke it in Woolworths.

SwedishEdith · 03/12/2017 16:08

It's ok if it's thin and dark gold/dark orange i think

That's pretty niche.

endehors · 03/12/2017 16:33

I bought some for child's tree last year. I like it. Silver and gold especially.
I don't use it on main tree. Though the 1950s tree fairy we have has some ancient miniature silver tinsel on, I think, her wrist.
