Excellent presents for women that aren't...

Because @monkeymamma's thread for men is genius.

I'm looking for gifts for women (especially older women) that aren't:
Candles
Chocolate
anti-wrinkle cream
perfume
anything really twee and covered in flowers.

Particularly struggling with my mum this year, she is really into South American art and media. Budget 10-20 pounds.

I'm getting that bag for my DM Autumnal, she'll love it ❤

MrsHathaway · 08/11/2017 19:31

Talking of bags, I forgot I had shortlisted this witty and feminist shopping bag for my mother.

Totes for women, geddit?

Turtle doves wrist warmers - thanks for the tip, they are beautiful and so soft. Well packaged and fast delivery. Shame I have to gift them!

Can anyone recommend anywhere to buy lovely mugs. I have tried all the obvious places like department stores and the big names, plus places like Magpie but I haven´t found the perfect thing yet.

Justchillaxing · 09/11/2017 19:42

Ooh those wrist warmers are lovely! Are they scratchy at all?

FridgeCut · 09/11/2017 20:18

Well I tried them on for quality purposes and no, they felt perfect and I am allergic to wool and scratchy stuff so would have felt it. They are perfect, I will be sad to see them go!

I’m buying the young women the ingredients for Chambord Royale: Chambord is £6 in Morrisons, TTD Prosecco on Sains double up, a lovely fine flute and a pack of raspberries. I’d love that.

SimplyNigella · 10/11/2017 07:34

margaritas what sort of thing are you looking for? Have you looked at places like Rockett St George, Graham & Green, Rose & Green, Bonnie & Bell and Plumo?

margaritasbythesea · 10/11/2017 18:17

Thanks SimplyNigella - I haven´t but I will! Thanks for the recommendations. She has varied tastes and nothing has struck me as right yet. Something always does though. She is my favourite person to buy presents for.

Japanese · 10/11/2017 20:13

@Gruach - did you know you can get Islay gin (as well as whisky). Have just bought my Mum a bottle from John Lewis.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/11/2017 20:31

Look at Denby pottery for utterly beautiful mugs.

SimplyNigella · 10/11/2017 20:48

I love having someone like that to buy for, the research is so much fun.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 10/11/2017 20:53

I think Sainsbury’s Kew mugs are lovely. They’re bone china so they’re delicate and drinks stay hot. Going to treat myself to more in the double up.

margaritasbythesea · 10/11/2017 21:28

Thanks for the further suggestions. I have some Denby on my possible list and I will have a look at Sainsbury´s too.

It´s a delight Nigella. DH hates receiving presents and it is so dull. Her bf is just the same and never buys her anything. I love it when I find something that will make her squeal with delight. Last year I got a trio of different things which hit the spot and she turned to my chilldren and told them very solemnly that I am a very clever girl. Preen.

Emeralda · 10/11/2017 22:06

Great thread. Previous presents that seem to have gone down well with DSM are Waitrose Manuka honey, a set of travel water colours in a case about the size of a mobile phone, and some blank watercolour postcards. This year, I had been thinking Dog Bingo but I may do better now that I have this thread for inspiration.

Peeetle · 10/11/2017 23:18

What actually is the point of wrist warmers? Part of me wants them, part of me can’t see why you’d wear them.

PrivateParkin · 10/11/2017 23:29

Peetle I love mine because they keep my wrists and hands warm all the way down to almost the fingertips, and unlike gloves you don't have to keep taking them off if you want to open your handbag, get your purse out, use your phone, whatever it may be.

Great thread! I’ll be coming back to it a few times I think.

peeetle I get really dry, cracked hands in winter, particularly around my knuckles. Wrist warmers, if they went a little way up my fingers too, would help greatly with this.

redtulip12 · 11/11/2017 00:20

Thanks for this thread. Didn’t have a clue what to buy my Mum until I saw the Cashmere wristwarmers. Googled them and found Hush do them for £35. As I had a £10 off referral code from a friend they are a bargain for £25. One present down, several more to go!
If anyone is new to Hush and want my referral code to give £10 off send me a message.

Pengweng · 11/11/2017 06:42

Love this thread. I'm going to get MIL the book club subscription and I am putting the Turtle Dove Wrist warmers on my list of things i would like. I work in Early Years so am outside in all weathers but need my fingers free to help the children and take observations on ipad etc and these look much warmer than my £2 fingerless gloves.

Gruach · 11/11/2017 07:43

Japanese - I did, but thanks!

Desperately trying to think of anything else I might like that isn't terrifyingly expensive and/or dentistry. Can I put dentist fees on my Christmas list?

(This is why I prefer whisky - avoid the fizz and sugar of tonic water.)

TroysMammy · 11/11/2017 07:48

I'm coming up to a big birthday and I've mentioned my paperweight collection a few times.

lostlalaloopsy · 11/11/2017 07:52

I'm getting Mum and MIL some things from Harris Tweed. They do lovely purses and bags. I may drop a few hints to DH that I would also like

SimplyNigella · 11/11/2017 07:54

margarita that really made me smile.

I've just added some velvet trim White Company pyjamas to my own wish list, they look gorgeous.
