Excellent presents for women that aren't...

Because @monkeymamma's thread for men is genius.

I'm looking for gifts for women (especially older women) that aren't:
Candles
Chocolate
anti-wrinkle cream
perfume
anything really twee and covered in flowers.

Particularly struggling with my mum this year, she is really into South American art and media. Budget 10-20 pounds.

Books
Good coffee/tea
Scarf
Gloves
Slippers
Blanket

Theducksarenotmyfriends · 06/11/2017 21:04

I'm really easy to buy for. All I want is wine, maybe something from lush, mostly wine though. What did I get for my birthday? Another. Bloody. Scarf. I make scarves, I get given them, I've got a million, why??!

Reed1 · 06/11/2017 21:06

As adults are you not in any way capable of buying all this stuff for yourselves at some point, instead of waiting for some other adult to buy it for you.

It just doesn't make sense to me. But call me a Bah Humbug if you want.

Being an adult means that Christmas presents are over.

WhirlwindHugs · 06/11/2017 21:08

Thanks @Frege I'll check her out (and my Mum's bookshelf!)

I love candles! I'd also love a book or DVD box set, some lovely coffee, anything alcohol related, lovely cheese...

The present I would really like is a matching sugar caddy to my tea and coffee caddies. It's an old retro Hornsea design, but they're pretty common on eBay Just can never find the exact one...

tentative3 · 06/11/2017 21:14

Reed I explained my reasons on the other thread. And I bought a paddle boarding experience for my mum because she'd expressed an interest in it, there was no need to be bitchy about it.

AfterSchoolWorry · 06/11/2017 21:15

I want someone to give me:

A drill
Silk pillowcases
Clothes vouchers

MsHarveySpecter · 06/11/2017 21:21

I've recently been given

Cashmere bed socks
Jamie's new book, which is great
A subscription to Coast magazine
Nigel Slater's new book
A beautiful travel cup for taking coffee in the morning

Reed1 · 06/11/2017 21:23

tentative

Christmas brings out the best in everyone I see, at least I am honest and say it out straight. HO HO HO.

No wonder it is a time full of stress and anger and sweat.

I meant nothing but a funny response. Take it as you will.

AutumnalLeaves38 · 06/11/2017 21:24

OP,

Gift idea for your Mum:
What about a selection of these Mexican Art postcards ?

Varied styles here: not all Day Of The Dead folk art!

She (or you?) could frame a few, then use the rest for writing to friends.

50% off code to use by the 8th.

Great idea for a thread, BTW...am watching closely for inspiration. Have myself a few 'atypical' (according to most flipping unimaginative companies, apparently) female relatives to buy for. Smile

Sadik · 06/11/2017 21:24

I'm late 40s if that counts as older? I am always very, very happy to be given earrings from these people.

And to the pp above, I love to have beautiful earrings, my mum loves to give me a gift at Christmas time (this year I am giving her the gift of a lot of hours putting together a bloody impossible and heavy cold frame), we are both happy and I don't see what is wrong with that!

Similarly I always enjoy choosing a book or a cd for someone I love, and also reading / listening to something that someone who knows my tastes has chosen for me.

tentative3 · 06/11/2017 21:32

Reed, it causes me no sweat and anger and stress.

Christmas doesn't bring out anything bad in me; it wasn't me that made bitchy comments in an attempt to look superior. And I've been entirely honest too. What a strange post.

SeaToSki · 06/11/2017 21:33

Once I got a basket with a crazy cheese and some luxury biscuits and a spicy chutney. Loved it, but I am a cheese o holic

WhirlwindHugs · 06/11/2017 21:34

Oooh, that's a really interesting idea @Autumnalleaves38 thank you.

I think I'm going to do recon on the artists she likes most and then see if I can find a selection of framed postcards. Would look really lovely.

I am an adult and I love buying and receiving presents. Our family do a pool so each couple (there are quite a few of us) buys one gift for one other couple with a budget set of £50. We can write a list to help the buyer. Previously, we have been asked for/received:
A fabulous Luxury Bird House
A bread maker
A set of beautiful Cath Kidston glasses
A car vacuum (Confused)
A huge wooden bowl from a wood turner
It works really well as we will get something we love but might not buy ourselves.

Other things I like to buy people: vintage tea sets, handmade ceramics, those cashmere wrist warmers (lush), any things with pompoms on

PrivateParkin · 06/11/2017 21:35

I really want a mini bain-marie from Lakeland, for melting chocolate over a pan. It's about £8 but I'd never buy it for myself as it seems so frivolous. And a nice colourful silicon spatula. oh and some of that reusable baking paper

Altwoo · 06/11/2017 21:36

I love to give presents of things that people may not have necessarily thought of buying for themself, so:

  • a go at the crystal maze
  • hint hunt escape room experience
  • PlayByPlay theatre membership
  • GLOSSYBOX subscription
  • big box of make up and beauty samples saved over a year!
  • Culture Whisper membership - you get tickets to a cultural experience from a shortlist to choose from every month
  • jam making kit from a fruit tree - not on the high street
  • willoughby book club subscription
  • person’s favourite song turned into a sound wave print
  • engraved necklace from NOTHS
  • took my grandad to Ping Pong, where table tennis was invented (niche interest but might still apply!)
  • croissant making course at bread ahead
  • the book of you book (personalised book)
  • word cloud print of words you associate with them
  • Houses of Parliament tour
  • lunch at benares

I love buying presents :-)

Ginorchoc · 06/11/2017 21:37

I like everything on this site www.theliterarygiftcompany.com

WhirlwindHugs · 06/11/2017 21:37

@tentative3 I've found your comments and everyone else's really helpful!

I've got no desire to spend money just for the sake of it, but I do want to get something nice for people I really appreciate. It's meaningful to spend time thinking about what those close to you really enjoy.

Sometimes it's tricky! Which is why I have found these threads great, but it's worth it to me.

Either Nigella or Jamie’s latest books
Cool gel pad for pillow (from Amazon) yes it’s that time of life!
A nice liqueur
A home baked cake - preferably red velvet CakeSmile
A magazine subscription

dementedma · 06/11/2017 21:39

I'm in my 50s and would welcome:
Isle of Skye scented candle
Book voucher
Perfume
Decent Gin
A really good pen
Earrings
Poetry book
Nip and fab skincare
Lush stuff

whenthestarsturnblue · 06/11/2017 21:41

I agree with Gruach, I'd love Amazon vouchers, I have a saved cart full of stuff I can never quite justify buying. Is she likes south american art, can you get a digital file of a piece she likes and get it printed on eg cushions (or is that a terrible idea for an art lover!?)

Jayfee · 06/11/2017 21:42

When I die,my family will find the guilty batch of unused gifts...scarves, candles, statuettes...but all given and received with love

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 06/11/2017 21:45

Some lovely ideas here Flowers

Appin · 06/11/2017 21:46

Where would one get cashmere wrist warmers?
