I think the code works after you've popped your email in once it knows you're a new customer. I tried to add it to my basket and it didn't work but it worked at checkout once I made an account

Minsmum I was getting that message - in the end I ignored it but didn't try to use any other referrals links. I deleted everything in the basket, went back to home, clicked on mugs tab at the top to bring up the most popular ones (rather than following and searching the 2 for 30 offer), then clicked add to basket for polka followed by two others, then in checkout go to the promo code section, add EBY63DHDC4V. It then worked £20 no postage - I had tried a couple of times before with no luck.

make sure you are adding the discount code in the correct place as there is also a different box next to it for gift certificate codes.
