PamBeasleyHalpert · 24/09/2017 21:27

Can anyone explain what an Echo dot is and tell me if I need one (or several - 2 teens and a tween here)? TIA

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 24/09/2017 21:28

thank you noword that melissa and Doug penguin is adorable - definitely added to the list for dd 😍😍

albus thanks for price info.. sadly beyond my budget 😂😂

Divingheadfirst · 24/09/2017 21:34

My DS5 has asked for a nerf go cart which is £230. Ive said no as I don't think he'll get the use out of it to make it worth it, plus I dont have a garage to store it in.

Hes keeps asking and said if hes really good may be Santa will bring it. He talks about it everyday! He'll be 6 in November and I'm not sure what to do. He would love it if he got it, we could afford it but I don't think its worth the money!

SheStoodInTheStorm · 24/09/2017 21:36

Also wondering if she needs an Echo for

SheStoodInTheStorm · 24/09/2017 21:36

DOT

Haudyerwheesht · 24/09/2017 21:41

divinghead we bought a second hand normal go kart from a local activity centre for £45 and sprayed it so it was like new. You could try and do something like that?? I've got the kids some nerf stuff for Xmas and was thinking of providing gaffa tape to pimp up the gokart?!

VoldemortsNipple · 24/09/2017 21:50

@Unicorn81 Thanks, although it's more the principle of false advertising that has me annoyed. They are offering the sprays at a lower price online but then telling you they can't ship them Hmm. Why offer something to buy online if they won't post it. It's not even as if it's an oversight because it's part of their special offers.

gingerbreadmam · 24/09/2017 21:54

the echo dot is a very small speaker similar size to a hockey put.

it is operated by amazon and voice activated so you speak to it and ask it to do stuff. i think you can get dab radio stations free but for 3.99 a month u can have access to amazon music unltd. you can say play songs by and it will shuffle songs by the artist u choose. you can skip any u dont like by saying next.

you can also ask it the weather, the news and lots more. dif u go on amazon and search alexa skills (bit like apps) there is a
long list of stuff it can do.

it can interact with other stuff for people into gadgets like the phillips hue lights. you can ask alexa to dim change colour etc. they are pricey tho.

i think the cheapest thing i fpind tht the dot connected with was a plug socket so u plug say ur kettle into socket then say to alexa boil kettle and she will switch the plug on.

gingerbreadmam · 24/09/2017 21:56

oh and i think most teens would love a dot. i think they can connect to fitbits too.

Isadora2007 · 24/09/2017 22:03

You can use a dot as a speaker for iPod or phone as well via a cable.
I think the music at £3.99 is available for the household which is good value. I'm going to see if it also has audio books... probably not...
the kids really love "Alexa" though and they're 5 and 8... I keep saying "stop annoying her!" Weirdly...

You can ask her to remind you of things and tell you the weather and find the Archers to listen to. Maybe I love her too. Dh is just pleased to have a woman who does as she is told! 😂

FoofFighter · 24/09/2017 22:19

@Mountsnowdon it's a plastic monkey that can hang by it's tail or by opening its hands, about 10cm I think, they just squeak and make noises and move their heads.

I'd buy on offer but wouldn't pay full price. Dd got one as a bday gift from a friend and likes it but play value very limited.

Would recommend little live pets over fingerings

DumbledoresArmy · 24/09/2017 22:32

Blimey those fingerlings are expensive for what they are!

SunSeptember · 24/09/2017 22:36

Shock thanks albus! I thought Costa supposed to be cheap?

JemimaLovesHamble · 24/09/2017 22:36

Hmmmm. wonder if that classic cadbury's set will have the nice original recipe chocolate in it or the grim American tampered with variety?

I got very excited for a minute there but sadly, it's the palm/shea candlewax stuff. The days of a glass and a half of whole milk in a bar are long gone Sad

SheStoodInTheStorm · 24/09/2017 22:50

Our chocolate oranges are definitely not going to make it to Christmas Hmm

AlbusPercival · 25/09/2017 05:12

I know, so mich money, but they are lifesize, can imagine how much they would be in Hamleys

Pinkyboo20 · 25/09/2017 06:19

The Dots can access an audible account, and you can have multiple books being read on different Dots at the same time.
They can also access Spotify, although only 1 Dot can access an account at a time with that, and a second one being accessed will make the first one stop.

There are "skills" you can activate, like apps. You can play a choose your own adventure game; I'm thinking of an animal; rock, paper, scissors; or even rock, paper, scissors, lizard, Spock.

If you have Hive you can control heating, lights, plugs etc through it, and there are other brands where you can do stuff.
