What do you like to see on a Christmas Card??

Hello - and help!

I have a teeny business (if you could call it that!) doing illustrations and cards.
I'm just getting myself organised to get a few Christmas card designs done, and I'm not feeling inspired 😕
What designs are you drawn too?
I mainly do animals, landscapes. I have a stag and a penguin from last year, and a robin and a polar bear that are maybes!

I am open to ideas.....hit me!!

I tend to buy a mixture of religious and secular cards, sending the kings/Baby Jesus/Bethlehem to friends and family I know go to church if only at Christmas, and baubles/holly/robins to those I know are definitely not practising Christians, and seeing what I've got left for those I don't know about. Probably about 40%:40%:20%, I'd say.

I suppose it is a bit daft @drspouse!
I have mainly only done animals/landscapes/trees so far, hence the market research to see what other things people are likely to buy.
I think I will get a nativity scene done though, going off the feedback on here.

I like a nativity scene, particularly Mary with baby Jesus.

I like a bit of glitter, but classy glitter obviously!

My favourites are:

Animals - realistic rather than cutesy. Love your robin! I'm very partial to a fox, not particularly Christmassy but I've seen it done. Owls. Stags/reindeer. All woodland folk really. Like the idea of a hare. Love them in silhouette against a (possibly ever so slightly glittery) winter sky too.

Thick, good quality card with nice lettering on, with some kids no of reference to a carol, I like ve a good Carol (lies, ALL THE GLITTER!). This sort of thing (but I've seen nicer) www.johnlewis.com/kelly-ventura-fa-la-la-la-la-christmas-cards-pack-of-8/p3311201

Some kind of street/town/village scene that's not too twee and old fashioned but looks kind nod of timeless and nicely festive without being too OTT. Local scenes a lovely idea. With glitter Grin

😁@composteleana
Maybe I need a bit more glitter in my life....😊 a wee dusting of frosty glitter on the snow could be very pretty.

That robin is fab OP. I envy your artistic ability.

Animals in Santa hats don't appeal and I dislike small flimsy cards, but otherwise I'm easily pleased!

I'd offer a mixture of religious and secular/wintry. I like the idea of using a local landmark.

I once received a nice Christmas pudding with holly sprig one. I liked the round shape and the splash of green/red.

There might be a market for a bit of glitter because it's quite rare these days. I like it - reminds me of childhood Christmases. You may find that nostalgiac middle-aged customers snap them up! Or maybe that's just me :-)

I live in countryside and bought cards last Year depicting our rural location with snowy scene in black and white. No buildings. They were quite artistic. I love a snowy scene😊

ShowOfHands · 05/09/2017 21:26

I like a vintage card. Couple of urchins gazing in a window, Victoriana, robins etc.

Shirley Hughes illustrates Christmas perfectly imho.

TheWoollybacksWife · 05/09/2017 21:30

I like cards that aren't too fussy but I do like a bit of sparkle or gilding.

I tend to buy Christmas cards that are nativity related although I'm partial to a snow scene with a bit of glitter.

Branleuse · 05/09/2017 21:32

Krampus

TheColonelAdoresPuffins · 05/09/2017 21:38

Grin I'd buy that!

VivaJen · 05/09/2017 21:40

Holly, trees, stockings and I go for non religious cards. I'm also a sucker for dog Christmas cards.

What do you like to see on a Christmas Card??
PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 05/09/2017 21:45

I had some lovely baby angels/cherubs last year.

I'm very easy - nativity or traditional. DM is particularly fond of postboxes with a robin.

I don't like very pale ones though, we hang them in strings down the walls and very pale just blend in.

Branleuse · 05/09/2017 21:45

That makes me feel all festive

AnnieAnoniMouse · 05/09/2017 21:47

Nothing old fashioned religious, but I do love a snowy church scene.

I like things like your Robin, but on a log/tree, with a bit of snow, sprig of holly etc.

Donkeys

Santa

Old fashioned toyshop window

Christmas tree

Beautifully decorated cottage/village/snow scene

Decorated Fire Place scene - roaring fire, stockings hung up, dog on a rug etc

Christmas Pud

Bells/baubles

Loads, but I'm clearly also incredibly fussy because I really struggle to find cards that I love.

Normally in September I'd be scowling at the mere mention of Christmas,, but it's so bloody wintery here I'm almost looking forward to it already!

Good luck with your wee business.

blankface · 05/09/2017 21:49

Maybe add a sprig of holly in your robin's beak?

I buy Winter Solstice cards.

foodiefil · 05/09/2017 21:54

A tree in the window of a beautiful cottage/house

singadream · 05/09/2017 21:57

Just after dc3 was born so I was still hormonal etc I got a card from friends and it just drew me to it - so much so that I emailed the artist (name was on back) to say how much I had loved it and he sent back details on how I could buy a print and then when I got some birthday money I did indeed buy a print of it. It was a lowry-esque scene of people walking through the snow, one carrying a christmas tree. I could find it online probably. hold on...

I also really like ones the rnli do - like lifeboats at christmas

TitsalinaBumSqoosh · 05/09/2017 22:09

Donkeys! I look after an elderly lady that has a Christmas card on display because she likes the little Donkey in the snow. Smile

flutterworc · 05/09/2017 23:10

Robins. Really beautiful robins. I've inherited my Dad's love of the cheerful little scarlet wonders.

TheColonelAdoresPuffins · 05/09/2017 23:33

Ideally i like a robin to be plump.

LaurieFairyCake · 06/09/2017 07:25

That's a beautiful card singadream
