Presents for "cool" teen

DD1 is 13 and is "cool" (not sure what being cool involves, but DD2 in the year below confirms that yes DD1 is regarded as cool).

The main present she wants this year is fairly pricey and she has been very good about not asking for lots of other stuff. I want to get a few things for her stocking (which we still do) but because she has not asked for other stuff I need ideas. My sister has also requested some ideas.

So any suggestions? What are the "cool" make up brands, accessories etc? Stocking is fairly large so don't need to be particularly small in size. I would quite like to impress her by my (borrowed from MN) coolness.

So far I have on my list of possibilities a jar of marshmallow fluff, one of those lipsticks with a flower in it, a couple of frames for instax photos and a grow your own cactus kit. Which may or may not be cool!

Re makeup - if she's only just starting to get interested I wouldn't buy the high end stuff like mac, urban decay etc. They are pricey and you might be setting an expectation if she starts wearing make up regularly smile. Also, at 13 she'll want to experiment so maybe a couple of lower priced palettes?
I agree, can't believe people suggesting brands like Anastasia Beverly Hills and Mac for a 13 yo. They're expensive enough for an adult daughter's present, never mind a child's.

I've got that lipstick with the flower in. It looks gorgeous, and the colour suits me, but it tastes rank.

Dd isn't cool but has friends who are

She'd say

Mac makeup
Benefit mascara
Real Techniques brushes
Costa card
Ivy Park sports crop tops & underwear

perdita my DS tells me that Gap is considered by teenage boys to stand for "gay and proud" - he has some of their clothing as he has never been one to follow the crowd but wouldn't advertise the fact.

Dd goes to a school where being gay is not seen as at all unusual/derogatory etc.

But Gap is uncool from the age of about 11 onwards.

Get yourself to Superdrug and the brand Makeup Revolution. Not only is it cool, but it's good stuff. I will happily buy stuff alongside my Mac and Bobbi Brown. They do great eyeshadow palettes, some of which are Too Faced dupes. Their highlighters are comparable with Anastasia Beverley Hills one and I like their lipsticks.

Dd is 15yo and likes their stuff as well.

Gap is super uncool amongst teenagers

Depends on how alternative or mainstream they are!

Most of the teens I know are very politically active / alternative / androgynous / into 90s retro cool. Beyonce / Costa / Jack Wills / Calvin Klein etc. would definitely not be their thing!

Gap is uncool because their clothes are for mums, nothing to do with the gay & proud thing which has been doing the rounds for years.
For example the hat linked to earlier, kids who want a Pom Pom hat want o ecwith a massive fluffy Pom Pom, the gap one is just a nice sensible woolly hat, nothing wrong with it but not really what most 13 year old girls would go for this winter

Don't know if it's been suggested already but selfie phone cases are popular, they have lights round them to light your selfie better!!

But round here those massive Pom Pom hats are sneered at. I actually asked did when we saw one thinking it might be a hat she actually wore and she said "just no mum". I suggested Pom Pom accessories( thinking a Pom Pom hair bobble would be a good stocking filler) and I got the raised eye brow.

Teens differ a lot as does the definition of "cool".

Just goes to show that people's ideas of cool are very varied! I tend to associate "cool" with alternative indie types who are a bit anti-brand/avant-garde/off the beaten track/exactly not what everyone else aspires to. Because of what the OP said about her DD shopping in Urban Outfitters/buying vintage aged 13 I assumed that was the kind of cool she meant. But for some people "cool" means popular, the popular/desirable brands which make you fit in at school and which mainstream teens aspire to and so on, which is a bit different; but fair enough, the OP's DD might fall into either of those categories, or somewhere in between!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think DD falls somewhere between cool in the avant garde sense and cool in the popular sense. As she gets older I expect it will veer more to the avant garde. She knows her own style, but is very difficult for someone else to buy for and she does not just want money/vouchers as she loves the excitement of opening presents. She is also not dropping hints as she is very hopeful for a new phone and does not want to give us an excuse to get something other than a phone, or appear greedy. I am trying to get round it by asking her what her (also cool) friends want for Christmas!
I think, as Green says, a lot of the suggestions on here will be too mainstream for her (although lots of good ideas for my younger DD), but there are a few I think she will like, so progress.

Our 14YO says that oval make up brushes are all she wants this year....
She already has a ridiculous amount of makeup. I didn't even know what oval make up brushes were.....

These type of makeup brushes (about £12 from eBay) they are the single best makeup related purchase I have ever made!

They come in sets of far too many though, I only use one or two of the sizes.

I bought myself one of those selfie phone cases a while back, it's literally blindingly bright! But friends and I had a laugh with it, my dds rolled their eyes at me (I have clearly out-cooled my own children) but they have taken selfies on it judging by the photos that have recently appeared on my phone!

I'm clearly not cool enough, what the hell is a bralet?!

I told on good authority that anything involving the popular beat combo 'Twenty One Pilots' should do nicely.

Sadik · 16/11/2016 20:54

This is the calvin klein one mentioned above OSET. They're just crop-tops really - I've got this lace one which is wonderfully comfortable for the small-of-chest even when not at all a teenager :)

Watching this with interest! My dd will be 13 shortly after Xmas. She told me her Xmas list and she has been told that she will get a few things from it for Xmas and a few for her birthday...she'll not be getting everything!

List includes:

CK grey bralette and matching leggings.
White Addidas t-shirt.
Too Faced chocolate bar eye shadow.
Selfie ring light for phone.
Extra long charging cable for phone.
Victoria Secret body spray.
Microwave hot teddy thing.
Makeup brushes and beauty blender.

There's a few other things but can't remember. Nearly fainted when I saw it because of the price of some of the items but I'll split it between the 2 occasions.

13 year olds in my neck of the woods are obsessed with brands. Victoria Secrets is massive at the minute and there Pink range does everything from makeup to gym bags so maybe a Pink pencil case for back to school would be very cool. They also do perfume and body spray which would be cool in her school bag.

They also love anything from Lush
