Presents for "cool" teen

DD1 is 13 and is "cool" (not sure what being cool involves, but DD2 in the year below confirms that yes DD1 is regarded as cool).

The main present she wants this year is fairly pricey and she has been very good about not asking for lots of other stuff. I want to get a few things for her stocking (which we still do) but because she has not asked for other stuff I need ideas. My sister has also requested some ideas.

So any suggestions? What are the "cool" make up brands, accessories etc? Stocking is fairly large so don't need to be particularly small in size. I would quite like to impress her by my (borrowed from MN) coolness.

So far I have on my list of possibilities a jar of marshmallow fluff, one of those lipsticks with a flower in it, a couple of frames for instax photos and a grow your own cactus kit. Which may or may not be cool!

If she likes vintage, is it more steampunk or more 60s?
I saw a steampunk jewelry maisy making set, I think on Amazon.

Erm where did "maisy" come from?

My Dd is 17 and loved the ted baker boots set last year.
She recently took a shine to the Harry Potter colouring book, so thats going in this year.
It's always hard to tell what she will love and what will be shoved away unused.
Even harder is my ds 15 this year...

Dd says Real Techniques brushes as they are cheaper than some but really good quality.
Dd also suggests a Starbucks gift card ( she wants one!)
I bought dd14 a benefit make up set last year which she liked. She now says it was annoying as she had to keep the whole tin just for the eye shadows so maybe get separates Confused Grin

Eos lip balm, especially if you can get limited edition flavours ( try top shop) it's THE lip balm to have in your blazer pocket at school!

altik · 12/11/2016 23:44

For a "cool" teen DD I would go for some of the brands that older teens or 20-somethings would like, and pick a few cute home items such as stationery, alphabet items, e.g. wash bag, jewellery, a trinket box; earphones, etc.

Urban Outfitters do jewellery, home and accessories items which are often very cool and quirky; ditto Oliver Bonas, which often has some great toiletries (lip balm, bath fizzers) as well as a good sale section on the website and fab cheap but very cool jewellery. Paperchase, Dotcomgiftshop and Sass and Belle also good (Sass and Belle has a good sale section ATM). For clothes I would get vouchers and let her choose something herself. Perfume is a tricky one as a cool DD won't want the obvious choices, so don't go too mainstream, though Benefit is always good for a cool teen/20-something (though expensive).

Oh and try Lisa Angel for stocking filler jewellery, esp. the sale section for some great bracelets!

For Calvin Klein undies it's specifically the bralet in grey that appears to be must have

I was quite "cool" as a teenager (though not "mainstream" cool, more "alt/indie" cool) and I would have loved this kind of thing, for example:

Plus for small eatable things for stockings, M&S and Superdrug you can't beat. Superdrug have an acrylic jar of watermelon sour sweets at the moment in their stocking fillers section that any young teen would love as would I

"For Calvin Klein undies it's specifically the bralet in grey that appears to be must have"

I'm glad to hear this, as dd has grey CK bralets owing to them being on sale when I was ordering undies for myself and hence cheaper than the Marks version she normally has!

Re makeup - if she's only just starting to get interested I wouldn't buy the high end stuff like mac, urban decay etc. They are pricey and you might be setting an expectation if she starts wearing make up regularly Smile. Also, at 13 she'll want to experiment so maybe a couple of lower priced palettes?

Sleek do some really nice eyeshadow pallets and you could buy a UD primer.

The real techniques core collections are good to start off with makeup brushes (plus the web site is good for make up looks). Do comp are prices as when I bought them Groupon was cheaper than boots etc.

I think definitions of "cool" vary hugely. I also think trying to be "cool" is desperately uncool and kids should be encouraged to find their own style instead of following the crowd. Trying to make girls emulate an in look is damaging imvho.A lot of the brands on here deemed "cool" would fill many "cool" teens I know with horror anyhow.

I'm going with what my 12 and 13 year olds like, not what is "cool". My dd has always set her own qwerky style in everything and positively rebels against trying to fit in. That is deemed "cool" by me and worthy of huge respect. Find out what she genuinely likes and go with that.

Gap is super uncool amongst teenagers.

Apparently wearing GAP means that you are gay. (so I was told by by teens who think the whole thing is ridiculous but that is the message they get)

And parents are happy encouraging kids to buy into such ridiculous homophobic stereotyping.Shock Not "cool"in my book.

If you told my kids that they'd rush out and buy Gap to prove a point.

Hence my point earlier about coolness varying hugely. Joules makes me think of middle aged rugby mums, not cool one iota.
