Ideas for those hard-to-buy-for men in our lives

I was going to ask on the bargain thread but thought it might be easier to have a separate thread.

Please come and share your ideas for the men you are buying for. I have DH and several adult relatives to buy for and am stumped. My only idea so far is a Star Wars Thumb Wars light sabre book for DN.

Help me move away from the Lynx gift sets please (or at least get them cheaper).

This thread has been really useful .
Massive thanks to everyone.

Agree - - really helpful thread. It's the 'unusual' stocking fillers I struggle with for DH & DSs. Wooden glasses holder and form cards on order!
If you have men who travel abroad, adapters with double English sockets or adapters with USB slots are v useful - lots on eBay & amazon

My DH is also awful to buy for He hates getting stuff
but successes have been
a proper Japanese kitchen knife - he loved it ( bought the knife sharpener to go with it for birthday)
one of these for his wallet swiss army multi tool
a DeWalt cordless work torch, which angles around ( I should say our 4 year old DGS adores this too.. :)
Thanks for the formcard idea- think he will get this !

Also find it really hard to buy for any male relatives (unless they are under 10).

But if you have a man that likes something a bit unusual clothes wise

then try these.

www.gnat.co.uk/dress-shirts/

Order a bow tie first (which will then be free) and then order a shirt. You don't get to choose the shirt but it will be unique. Dp just got his the other day (thanks Dp, one less thing I can buy you) and it's amazing! Also really good customer service if unsure of sizing. He will wear his at work, from the front with a suit jacket on it's a white shirt. Once he takes it off it's not!

I've so far bought him a pair of cuff links.

I am toying with a Lego set because the only other thing he's asked for is a flag pole for the garden and a weather vane custom built to look like a ship he served on (somewhere around the £300 mark - I don't think so!).

I am going to keep an eye on this thread. He's a bloody nightmare. Last year I got him a framed single of the song we used to listen to endlessly when we first met with the frame engraved. But I am struggling to find anything else for him.

OMG those shirts are certainly unique Mycatsapirate! Where does your dp work to be able to wear one of those?

I got a couple of people the Lars Mytting book Norwegian Wood last year and they went down well.

Some great ideas here, just been given Gil for secret Santa - form cards it is!

My dad's favourite gift is a large jar filled with all his favourite sweets from an old fashion sweet shop.

Other successes for various men (family members not random folk! Wink) are:

Real Ale Train (RAT) tickets
Ghost hunt tickets
Show tickets
Personalised socks
Personalised marathon print showing times
Adopt a vine
Expensive chocolate
Sushi class

Lurking for ideas too.

This year, DH has asked for some aftershave and a belt, and that's about it. Previous successes for adult menfolk include:

Plants/pots/gardening paraphernalia
Driving experiences
Shirts/jackets
Posh PJs
Knives/spice kits/dishes/cooking paraphernalia
Lens/camera bag/photography book
Fire pit/BBQ paraphernalia
Posh beer/spirits
Magazine subscriptions

happiness He works as a Health and Safety officer for a chain of leisure centres run by the council!!

As long as his jacket is on he can wear it to meetings etc. In the office when it's just him and colleagues he can take the jacket off.

I've just seen that Tim Peake has a new book out which has 150 photos from space - all the proceeds are going to the Princes Trust.

Available on Amazon. Might be good for a man who has a space obsession?

I like to do DP a 'theme' gift each year, alongside other stuff.

Running box - gloves, top, gels, glow in the dark stuff etc
'Bottles' - everything from chilli sauce to wine to ale etc

This year I might get him some kitchen knives, a cookery book and a wok or something like that.

MammaGnomes · 06/11/2016 23:00

That's a great idea Remus, DP is getting a fit bit, I saw a good offer on men's health mag subscription so could get that to go with?! Any other suggestions greatly received?!

//Www.firebox.com is great for fun gifts for men. I get DP a big box of stuff from there every year - gifts ranging from film memorabilia to novelty books ('How to live with a Giant Penis', 'Crafting with Cat Hair' etc.)to limited edition rums and interesting gadgets. It has a bit of everything. My only criticism is that they don't seem to overhaul their stock very much so he's already had everything of interest over the past few years.

Best reactions he's given me have been for thoughtful presents. I got him a football signed by his favourite team (at auction) and he loved that. I also bought him an out of print book that he loved from his childhood.

TheCompanyOfCats · 06/11/2016 23:16

Remus, I do that too. We've had 'football year', 'favourite car year (accessories for his car and books about its history)', 'travel year', etc. Makes it a bit easier.

TheCompanyOfCats · 06/11/2016 23:22

....things to do with his family history have always gone down well too. His grandfather played for a particular football team so I bought him a book on the team do that he could see photos of him that perhaps he hadn't seen before. Similarly, another relative of his flew a particular type of plane in WW2 so I bought a book about the men who fought in those planes. He loved those gifts.

I also have a DP who is a nightmare to buy for. Doesn't really drink, isn't in to any sports apart from watching the UFC. Is a big gamer but buys literally every game of interest when it's released.

He loves game of thrones and we enjoy board games. I have previously got him GoT monopoly and this year have bought GoT cluedo.
Previous years hits include a coffee maker, Xbox, slushie/snow cone maker, an ultrasonic cleaner. Feeling a bit stumped for this year now!

So far I've got my dh a jumper and a pair of slippers ! I'm also thinking of trying to find some sort of cocktail recipe book as he is especially into rum at the moment and always trying it out with different mixers. Also will probably get Sharpe's beers, a board game of some sort and a travel mug.

Great ideas on this thread!

The Ladybird books for adults are good. I got Dp the Husband and The Shed for his birthday last year. He loves them.

IWOOT.COM have 3 for £20 on offer at the moment on loads of stuff. Worth a look.

I bought DP the Cloud Storage - www.iwantoneofthose.com/gift-home-office/cloud-storage/10952379.html?autocomplete=productsuggestion

I'm sick of the coffee table being covered in his random stuff. At least he'll be able to put it in one place now!
