Can we have a 'what board games are you getting' chat thread please?

Choosing the board games is my favourite part of Christmas shopping! :o

Unfortunately it is DH's turn to choose the main family game this year so I've reluctantly relinquished control - he's chosen Castle Panic, although the new cooperative Thunderbirds game came a close second.

For the DCs I've got that Bounce Off one that is advertised on telly - looks a bit of a five minute wonder, but they both go gooey over it whenever it comes on, and I'm thinking that will be the Santa present (as they know mum would never buy it ).

DSCs (teens/young adult, all live together) are getting a couple as a joint gift - the Batman edition of Love Letter, and the London Game.

DCs always get Top Trumps in their stockings, so DD (8) has Monster High and DS (6) has the retro style Transformers.

This is our fist year of board games as children are quite little.

Getting for the family- monopoly and Jenga. Getting for DS, 7, Cluedo and for dd,4, BukAroo.

Castle Panic is good! We got that last year and our older DC (9 and 7) love it. We like Love Letter in our house too, and for our Christmas Eve box we've got a Coup expansion pack. Last year we also got King of Tokyo, which is great fun, Fluxx the board game, and Forbidden Desert (quite a bit harder than Forbidden Island which friends bought us a couple of years back, but just as fun).

Have realised that we are £200 overdrawn with a week til payday so mustn't buy any more!!

Ooh King of Tokyo is one I'd really like to get. Actually a lot of the games on my ridiculously long wishlist are either Japanese or Japan themed.

Good to know about Castle Panic - I think I first heard of it on here. It says 10+ but don't think that's such an issue when it's a co-op anyway. We played Flash Point recently and that is brilliant (you have to work together to save people from a burning building before it collapses).

I didn't know there was a Fluxx board game we have the card game, Monty Python edition :o

Love Cluedo, I must start playing that with DD (DS can't read well enough yet so he would struggle). I am coveting the Big Bang Theory edition :o

Recent ones we've enjoyed are Indigo (got it for DS' birthday, he's a demon at it!), Steam Park and Takenoko.

I'm really tempted to get them another card game each too, I like the look of all the Gamewright ones such as Sleeping Queens which I've seen untold recommendations for on here. But then there's a couple of Egypt themed ones, and Egypt is currently our main home ed topic.

In June we are hoping to go to the UK Games Expo at the NEC. With a spare suitcase and as much cash as we can save up!

DP is getting game of life and I'm getting the tipping point game.

We got Castle Panic last year, it's quite fun. In fact DS asked for the wizard tower expansion for his birthday but when we tried to play that it took rather a long time and seemed fairly impossible to beat!
King of Tokyo is great (as long as you don't mind dice rolling games). I'm very fond of Takenoko too :) . Recently we acquired "Steam Works" (as we know the designer) and it's good fun, only played it once so far though.
This year for Christmas we are getting Jaipur, Love Letter, Smash Up, Codenames (actually we opened that yesterday as an early present because I really wanted to play it!) The one I really want is Mysterium but it seems to be quite hard to get hold of at a reasonable price. Sushi Go and Sleeping Queens have disappeared from the children's wishlists so I think somebody has got those.

I've bought Bugs in the Kitchen for one nephew and CodeMaster (by Thinkfun) for another so lots of gaming going on :)

Ticket to Ride has been 'on the list' for a while. I noticed it was reduced on Amazon so I've bought it!!

Wow. My DD loves board games and I was running out of ideas but you have given me quite a few new ones to look up.

We have the usual ones like Monopoly, Cluedo, etc. DD loves Labyrinth and Calypso too. Will have to start doing some googling

Sushi Go is one that I'd like to get for myself DD :)

Actually my Grandma has, as usual, given us some money for my birthday and the family's Xmas presents... might use my portion for another game

What game is Calypso please? Google is bringing up lots of different things :)

We're getting Takenoko for DD, Gravity Maze, Dinosaur Brainbites and Rex for DS. Rory's Story Cubes and Dixit for the family. I've picked Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective and Machi Koro, DH has finally chosen Space Hulk, Jaipur, The Grizzled and Mysterium (which I cannot wait to play!). Am getting Sushi Go for his stocking as well!

Love Letter and Flashpoint are fab! We recently got 7 Wonders Duel which is fun for us and And Then We Held Hands which is just lovely, very calming but difficult.

Oooh Machi Koro is cool! Got that last year.

I almost regret going on these sorts of threads you know... each time I do, the wishlist gets longer :o

In fact my specific games wishlist has had to be divided into two - one for big games, one for small card/dice games!

Our enduring favourite is Bananagrams (like Scrabble but without the dull bits). We take it on holiday every year. Also Dh likes card games. His family all love them too and are really good. I always have to be re-taught every time which is .

Got Articulate last year which was fun.

Might give Cluedo a go this year. I still have my old set from when I was young.

Maybe...maybe Monopoly. I've put it away for the last few years vowing never to play it again, it was causing too many arguments. Perhaps dc (and Dh ) have grown up a bit more now.

I love Bananagrams! I should get DD to play it. I recently got Boggle Slam, a card game, and just used it to get DS thinking of words rather than playing competitively. Could do the same with Bananagrams I guess :) I don't like Monopoly though. I haven't the brain for it, or the patience!

I think we're getting to the stage where the amount of game they're able to play has increased. We play a lot. We had our first home ed 'inspection' from the LEA earlier this year and she was very pleased with our range of games, she even mentioned it in her report as a brilliant educational resource :o I've played Labyrinth and Indigo with DD this evening while DS is at Beavers, and then we curled up on the sofa and started designing our own Greek Myths game. The kind of evening I always dreamed I'd have with my DCs one day :)

Sorry to have gone off on a tangent. This is something I could go on about for hours (typical Asperger's obsession!).

Currently looking at Sleeping Queens, Rat a Tat Cat and Sushi Go for the DCs (Amazon descriptions aren't always that helpful so I'm looking at the PDFs of the rules!) although I really shouldn't actually buy any . If I use my birthday money to get a game for myself I am thinking either King of Tokyo or Tokaido. Although Phantom Society looks pretty cool... as do several others...

I found Pandemic cheap on Amazon a couple of weeks ago thanks to the bargain thread, so am really looking forward to that. Bought DD personalised Monopoly, but am thinking she might be a little young for it yet so am keeping an eye on Castle Logic or Whoowassit (sp?) for Black Friday just in case!

Based on other mn recommendations, we've got Labyrinth, and Charades for kids. I hear a lot about Bananagrams, but what is the difference between that and scrabble?

Can't go wrong with monopoly in my opinion. They recently released a version of the city where we live so i want to get that one soon.

Ligretto and The Great Dalmuti are family favourite card games. I recommend them to anyone with DC of varying ages. They're games everyone can join in with.

Board games for older teens/ adults please. Strategy good, spelling/ word stuff bad ( as the older kids/ partners and dh are real wordsmiths - dd2 and I would feel left out).

We liked ankh- morpork and dixit...( yes I know it word based but not spelling dependent!)

My husband got Seven Wonders at the weekend. I really enjoyed playing it.
(Our daughter is named after a wonder, she will like playing it!).

I have had to insist on a one-in-one-out rule with table top games now. We have a lot. So I don't think we'll buy any more just for Christmas. Unless we get an expansion to something!

Ticket To Ride is a favourite, the app version (and Europe) were free on the Apple app store empty long ago.

Fuzzpig we are also hoping for a family trip to Games Expo this year. My husband went on his own last year (and came 4th in the Attack Wing nationals!).

Also going to brave getting monopoly off the top off the wardrobe. It went up there Christmas day 2010 after a fecking mahoosive family fight over who owned the water works.

DS2, who will be just 6, wants King of Tokyo and/or Smash Up for Christmas. Boardgamegeek is a good website for reviews.

Fuzzpig - Tokaido looks fab, I've been after it although a couple of reviews suggested that it may not have huge replayability. We watch a lot of video reviews, I like Starlit Citadel for very clear reviews although Rahdo, The Dice Tower and Shut Up and Sit Down are pretty good too.

I'm so glad that the kids are getting old enough to play games more. DD plays loads with us, it's fab :)

I got a bit carried away!

Bananagrams is great. My DC use it in a lot more of a freeform way than Scrabble, only this afternoon DS2 tipped all the letters and was spelling words like 'noob' and 'bum hole' much to DS1's hilarity.

I've asked DH for Ticket To Ride, and have got Dobble and a Wimpy Kid board game. I really like the look of that Sushi Go one (but have spent all my Christmas budget so must avoid the Twitch)
