Can we have a 'what board games are you getting' chat thread please?

Choosing the board games is my favourite part of Christmas shopping! :o

Unfortunately it is DH's turn to choose the main family game this year so I've reluctantly relinquished control Blush - he's chosen Castle Panic, although the new cooperative Thunderbirds game came a close second.

For the DCs I've got that Bounce Off one that is advertised on telly - looks a bit of a five minute wonder, but they both go gooey over it whenever it comes on, and I'm thinking that will be the Santa present (as they know mum would never buy it Wink).

DSCs (teens/young adult, all live together) are getting a couple as a joint gift - the Batman edition of Love Letter, and the London Game.

DCs always get Top Trumps in their stockings, so DD (8) has Monster High and DS (6) has the retro style Transformers.

Trying to resist the temptation to add more Hmm

Step away from "customers also bought"!

Story of my life, that is Blush

Wolf I'm sad to hear that about the Thunderbirds game. Do you mean this one? Cooperative game

I only heard about it from my friend as she's bought it for her DH, so I expect we will get to play it at some point. I had thought of getting it for DS' birthday in summer (he'll be 7, and is Thunderbirds crazy - the proper original one not this modern animated nonsense!) but I'll leave it unless we really like playing it with my friends, thank you.

I'm a sucker for a tactile game with nice feeling pieces.

Quirkle is a favourite here and very nicely made, and we like Enchanted Forest because it comes in a nice box and feels luxurious. It is a good game too for under 10s. City of Zombies is great for kids who like numbers, and we have just started playing Perudo with dd age 10. Our most played games are Rat a tat Cat and Dobble though because they are quick and easy to take with you. Getting Exploding Kittens for dd this year.

More recommendations for 'beautiful' and 'tactile' games required please.

waffly I'd say the second of those two links is likely to have more replay value as the pathwords one would be too easy once you've done each challenge once? Unless I'm misunderstanding it.
There's a word game called Composio which might be worth a look if they're good with words and spelling?

We have Thinkwords, it's not really that good for spellings as it's just thinking of a word which begins with each letter of the alphabet for a given Category. It's a quick fun game but not that great.

Isn't there a a wordsearch game? I'm sure I've seen one.

Glad to have inspired you, my dd also loves oriental-looking things :-). I feel that I should also point out that some people find Jaipur's set up a little fiddly, we don't mind though.

Dino Hunt Dice is great for kids too btw. Is the same game as Zombie Dice but with a different theme. DS loves it.

My copies of Jaipur and The Grizzled have arrived today! Am itching to have a look but have sensibly added to the massive pile of Christmas board games under our bed.

I have to clear some more space on the shelves to fit this lot in but am already planning January purchases too (my birthday...)

Labyrinth is on lightning deals at the moment, £9.99.

By the looks of it it's selling really well! I'm pleased it's become more popular. My neighbour used to have it when I was little, it was all purply back then

Fuzzpig, yes that's the one. To be fair Dh and ds seem to like it I felt that it was overly simple and didn't have enough depth/playability.

That's good to know, thank you. Luckily my friends often bring games with them when they visit so I'm sure we'll get to play it after Christmas. I think DS would be in love with it no matter what, since it's Thunderbirds, but £40 would be a huge portion of his present budget so I wouldn't want to waste it.

I'm excited about King of Tokyo. I feel like crap today so it's helped to spend my birthday money and get one heck of a bargain :o

Marrackech the place is what i am referring too. If its on your to do list as a place, then I recommend it whole heartedly although not sure with todays climate..but I love the place and DD loved it too, it left very lasting impression on her.

Am so inspired by this thread.

Is ticket to ride an attractive looking game?

Am I missing something about Quirkle - I mean I know the tiles are lovely but the game itself seems to be duller than a trip to dullsville??! I got it a couple of years ago but have only played it a couple of times as it seems like a cross between scrabble and rummikub but I'd much rather play rummikub! Have I missed some hidden depth? Do I need to revisit it?

Enjoy King of Tokyo - I'm sure you will!

Whoever was looking for a good word game (which doesn't involve spelling) I can recommend CodeNames - only played with 3 players so far and it was good fun but I am really looking forward to trying it with a bigger group. :)

Oh I thought you meant the game Drastic Blush

Grouching - Qwirkle Cubes is much better than Qwirkle IMO, as there's more strategy involved (you have to roll the dice to get the shapes you need, so involves probability)

We tend to host family games nights over the Christmas period.

Rapidough is a favourite for the young ones!

King of Tokyo, Betrayal at the House on the Hill and Zombiecide are all clear winners for the teens/young adults.

Ticket to ride is lovely. It would be perfect if the train pieces were wooden rather than plastic, but that's my only petty complaint :o

For Christmas, we just got Entropy, a (beautiful looking) card game. We played it, as we couldn't wait, and its fab.
Also ordering Ghost Blitz (saw reviewed on Dice Tower. Looks fun)
And Carcassonne, as we don't have that yet.
Fuzzpig-: Priests of Ra is an Egyptian themed auction style game. I think you have to play it a few times to get into it, but it's pretty enjoyable.

Mysterium and Space Hulk just turned up in the post for Christmas. Mysterium looks gorgeous, I keep staring at the box (still shrink wrapped despite enormous temptation!).
