Can we have a 'what board games are you getting' chat thread please?

Choosing the board games is my favourite part of Christmas shopping! :o

Unfortunately it is DH's turn to choose the main family game this year so I've reluctantly relinquished control Blush - he's chosen Castle Panic, although the new cooperative Thunderbirds game came a close second.

For the DCs I've got that Bounce Off one that is advertised on telly - looks a bit of a five minute wonder, but they both go gooey over it whenever it comes on, and I'm thinking that will be the Santa present (as they know mum would never buy it Wink).

DSCs (teens/young adult, all live together) are getting a couple as a joint gift - the Batman edition of Love Letter, and the London Game.

DCs always get Top Trumps in their stockings, so DD (8) has Monster High and DS (6) has the retro style Transformers.

Trying to resist the temptation to add more Hmm

french

could you tell us more about 7 wonders and why its so good please

Report
frenchfancy · 30/11/2015 15:43

7 Wonders is a strtegy game. It takes place over 3 "ages" and the idea is to build up your civilisation by adding raw materials, commerce, science, buildings and armies. There is some trading that takes place but it is not a trading game. You get a "wonder" (ie Ephesus, babylon, Giza etc) at the beginning of the game. Each one is different and affects your strategy.

The thing that makes it different is the way you play the cards. You are dealt a hand of cards, you chose one, then that hand is passed to your left and you get a new hand.

We love it as a family. The fact that our 9 year old DD can compete with her 16 year old sister whilst still keeping us all challenged and entertained means it is the game of choice here. That and the fact it takes 45 minutes from start to finish which is IMO the perfect length of time for a game.

That's good. I was about to get all annoyed I'd missed the offer - ordered Dixit yesterday - but thankfully there wasn't another game on the list that I'd be buying this year. I see 7 wonders is on there, and also Ingenious which I've heard good things about.

My parents are taking me out on Friday as it's (almost) my birthday - think we are going to a nearby town, in which case I'll be getting myself another little game from the lovely indie game shop there. And probably twitching on a card game each for the DCs... thinking sushi go for me if they have it, and sleeping queens and rat a tat cat for the DCs? And just like that I'll be £30 down...

Also I think of the entire year of having to play these games - as we dont buy in between xmas and bdays. The more variety the better

I got Exploding Kitties through Amazon Lightning deals last week. We've had a quick go as soon as it arrived and it's a lot of fun. I can see it going down well when we've had a few drinks as well Xmas Grin.
It was £12-80 when I bought it and it might still be on a deal this week some time.

I put both on my wishlist ikl but I'd probably get them the adult version (the youngest will be 18 by then after all... not that it really matters since they've been playing Cards Against Humanity for a while now :o)

DH and I tend to play pandemic if we want a two player game, we also have Lost Cities but haven't played that for a while. I played good old fashioned Downfall with DS at the weekend! But the two player game I've just put on my wishlist is called Patchwork - it's got really good reviews

Getting this year: London game, astronauts card game, love letter, I'm sure there's more I can't remember

For two players: Lords of war, Sushi Go, Gloom, Lords of Waterdeep, forbidden island (co-operative) ticket to ride Dominion intrigue.

Great thread Smile

Can anyone recommend some good games for 5 people? A lot seem to be for maximum of 4 players. We already have:

Harry Potter Destination Game
Cluedo
Sleeping Queens
Bananagrams
Picturika
Set card game

We have 2 teens and a nearly 9 year old who doesn't often 'get' games so nothing too complicated.

I've considered Dixit in the past but not sure if it's boring!

Hmmmm....

Sushi go! would be really perfect. It is atm my absolute favourite

A lot of the more complicated games are good for 5 players but a bit too tough for your 8 year old. Seven wonders is one of the best large number games (sushi go has a similar game mechanic so is good for leading into seven wonders). Otherwise Lords of Waterdeep, Catan (with right expansion is fun) and ticket to ride. Not sure that helps much

The other reason seven wonders is so good is that you can play up to 7 players at the same time and because , as frenchfancy fantastically explained everyone plays at the same time so no hanging around for 6 people to take their go.

If you are regularly playing 4+ people it is worth it and once you have it it is one of those games that you squeeze into any time gap too short for anything else.

However if you regularly playing 4 or less but occasionally 5 players; or with people that aren't regular players, it tends not to be my got to game. I would go for Lords of Waterdeep for better value for money.

Lords of Waterdeep is a fantastic game for the 2-4 player but plays up to 5 player as well
