I spoke to someone yesterday who had put their tree up already Shock. I thought that was just for the shops!

I have got a couple of friends coming here to do something festive (make wreaths) on the 1st. Sherry and mince pies will be involved and I was thinking of putting the tree up the day before to add to the occasion!

Bit earlier than usual for me I think but needs must and all that.

Whenever in December that the DCs want to put it up.

Naoko · 17/11/2015 10:47

Probably mid December. Will stay up till the Feast of the Epiphany. I'm not even religious but I grew up in a catholic area and some things are too ingrained.

Clutterbugsmum · 17/11/2015 11:01

Mine goes up on the night of the 30th November, so the dc come down to the tree on the 1st with their advent calendars underneath. And it comes down on the 1st/2nd Jan as dh is noramlly working.

Floralnomad · 17/11/2015 11:03

DH does ours the first weekend in December , outside lights are last weekend of November ready for switch on on December 1st .

Clutterbugsmum · 17/11/2015 11:03

Mine fake as I'm allergic to real trees.

nagynolonger · 17/11/2015 11:06

The weekend before Christmas. DH came from a family where Christmas Eve was the 'rule'. Comes down on 12th night.

SymphonyofShadows · 17/11/2015 11:12

Around the 12th. It's always down by NYE though as I am desperate to get all the decs down after Boxing Day

BaronessSamedi · 17/11/2015 11:17

the neighbours put up their xmas tree on 1st november Shock
for me, 1st december / first weekend in december is fine.

Fannyupcrutch · 17/11/2015 11:18

I have already put mine up Blush . I did it yesterday as I was super excited about all my new baubles! I have spent the last 11 months finding vintage glass baubles and some modern funky ones. And I finally had enough to do my tree. The tree in the shops is up so I figured, why not? I take my tree down right after boxing day so it's only a bit longer than normal. Was quite miffed though as out of my 4 kids only my 7yo ds wanted to help. I figure I may only get another 4 years and then she will be too old to be interested.

I'll put it up early this year, around the 7th I think, as dd is 3 and will enjoy it for the first time this year.

Up until now I have always preferred it a week before xmas, I will still take it down before New Year's Eve as like to start the year nice and clutter free.

nightandthelight · 17/11/2015 11:27

Usually first weekend in December but this year we are hosting a Christmas party that weekend so will need it up before that so will go for Advent Sunday on the 29th. That will be the earliest that I have ever put up a tree but at least it will be within Advent which I feel is acceptable Grin

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 17/11/2015 11:42

probably the 29th November this year (yes, early I know!)

celtictoast · 17/11/2015 11:59

About the week before. Any earlier and half the needles will have dropped off by Christmas!

pandaskitchen · 17/11/2015 12:07

Love the ornaments Fanny

Ours will most likely be up on the wkend of the 12th, down on the 3rd.

House in our street had decs up last Friday, me and DP were a bit Shock .

HoggleHoggle · 17/11/2015 12:12

Hmmm, slightly side question - for those posters who's tree doesn't go up until after Christmas birthdays - my ds birthday is 20th Dec but I still put the tree up before then. Am I being a bastard? Although I don't want his bday crashed by Christmas I sort of feel that to a certain extent he's got a Christmas birthday and a bit of cross over is inevitable. That, and I love having a tree up from midDec! Am I being horrible though? Feel a bit Confused after reading some of the posts...

Davros · 17/11/2015 12:22

Just make him think it's a good thing! Maybe he can have a smaller (fake) birthday tree just for him to decorate and put his birthday presents under it?
Ive got a LOT of general house decorations so I'll put them up at the beginning if December as I'm hosting a cousins' reunion on the 5th. Then the tree on 6th or 10th when DD has a half day or, failing that, the 11th ir 12th as we are out at panto on 13th. Phew!

HoggleHoggle · 17/11/2015 12:24

Thanks davros that's what I am hoping to do...create a magical Christmas birthday but I suddenly got the fear this was A Bad Idea!

BiddyPop · 17/11/2015 12:42

I have no idea this year.

We are putting up the fake, as we are travelling over Christmas itself, so timing is therefore immaterial.

However, as DH's Dad died earlier this month, and MIL will be visiting us just after the month's mind the 1st weekend of Dec, I don't think I want it up before she comes. DH is not as festive as normal (he is slightly the Scrooge to my Christmas mania but has improved over the years to actually planning stuff with me now!!). But at the same time, I am not sure yet quite how festive he wants to be - although he did say that while he doesn't think his DM will send cards, he doesn't see why "we" (read that as I - the normal scribe of all cards in the Pop household!) shouldn't be sending them as normal. We normally get cards supporting charities anyway, so it would be supporting a specific charity this year.

I may see if DMIL is up to putting it up while she is with us - probably staying for a week-10 days. All activities finish up (well, Saturday ones at least) on 5th, so the 12th could be good. Or else, some evening the following week when DMIL is gone home.

I will scale back the decorations in any event. Not so many window clings, garlands, and snowglobes as normal. And probably bring out the big nativity instead of just the small one we've been using in recent years. A bit more of the tasteful and understated style this year, rather than the glitter fest of recent years.

I MIGHT actually manage to make the advent wreath this year (I have the candles and have been threatening this for at least the past 5 years!). And I will put out the Advent Calendar on 1st December. And DD will put her favourite snowglobe in her room then as well, and her fleece blanket with a Santa scene on it will find its way into the sitting room too. But otherwise, I suspect, later and more toned down than usual.

PjDay · 17/11/2015 12:58

We always tend to go for the first Sunday of Advent (so can be anything from Nov 27th some years). We have an artificial tree so no issue with a wilting tree after a few weeks. However this year we have something on the 29th so I will probably do it on the Monday or Tuesday as I am off work.

BiddyPop · 17/11/2015 13:07

DD has her birthday on 26th, so its inevitable that there's a crossover.

Do you do things for any other birthdays in the house, decorations wise? Banners or the likes? Just make sure they go up , as normal, for a December birthday.

In our house, we buy DD's birthday cake together (she chooses) in M&S on Christmas Eve. (There is a time and a place to do lavish cakes at home - Christmas is not one of those!). Then on her birthday, we get in a good walk (for the previous day's dinner to fully digest), before having an "open house" in the afternoon for neighbours and any family nearby. M&S nibbles, mulled wine, and everyone knows it is a birthday day too. We generally leave the cake until visitors are gone (just because there can be Aspergers' meltdowns if it is not done perfectly right!) or else only cut it rather than blowing out candles. And DD gets to open her presents once others are gone too before going to bed - or at least a couple if it is getting very late and the rest kept for the following morning. We usually give her ours before visitors arrive.

So it is a distinctly different day for her.

HoggleHoggle · 17/11/2015 13:20

Thanks biddy ds is only going to be 2 this year so I don't have that much experience, more that I want to start off on the right foot. We did and will have a little family party for him and he has balloons and a cake, and I will def make sure that his birthday is the same as any sibling he has in the future.

Also, no joint bday + Xmas gifts unless he specifically asks for it when he's older.

Sorry for slight derailing OP!

MummyPig24 · 17/11/2015 13:23

Two weekends before Christmas Day. The weekend of the 12th.

BiddyPop · 17/11/2015 13:27

YY to no joint presents where possible. Certainly from the immediate family (DParents and DSiblings of the birthday child).

And where possible, remember to buy a birthday card in advance as well Blush - just don't ask me how I know this one is important - double Blush
