isn't that a bit young for her? It looks like something a 5 year old would play with. I've asked her if it isn't a bit babyish and she tells me that EVERYONE likes sylvanians at school "even people in year 6"

Anyone here an expert? Waddya think?!

How old is she exactly?

My dd is 6 and has never shown an interest in Sylvanians, but if she wanted it, I would probably get her it. Better to give her something she wants than something you think she should want.

But how old is she?

DumbledoresGirl · 03/12/2006 17:30

OH FGS DG read the title!

OK she is 8. Well, I stand by what I said.

hatwoman · 03/12/2006 17:31

no particular advice but I agree. is it very expensive? and is she likely to get any christmas money? if the answers are no and yes, then maybe you could suggest she bought it herself after christmas? then she might think a bit more carefully about it. ask her specifically who's got it - perhaps she's played with it at someone's house with a younger sister? but hasn;t really thought through how good it would be for her at home?

tortoiseshell · 03/12/2006 17:31

My dd who is 3 is very into Sylvanians atm, but on the other hand, I remember playing with My Little Pony till I was about 10, so maybe they just last a long time! I think the games change, so they do more involved games as they get older.

zippitippitoes · 03/12/2006 17:32

Willow Hall sounds rather nice

i fancied the department store myself

LIZS · 03/12/2006 17:32

ds' friend (8) has some but dd (5) plays with them when we go round ! Can imagine they might have appeal to older thna that though, cute version of Playmobil and collectible.

PrincessPeaHead · 03/12/2006 17:33

it is £45, so yes, pretty expensive

trouble is, is going to ask father xmas for it. so I suppose I have to get it. she hasn't written the letter yet so if everyone thinks it is v young for her I might be able to persuade her to change her mind....

but I see what you are saying - that if she wants it, it isn't to young for her. hmmm

"she" is going to ask FC... etc etc!

Oh blimey, dd is an expert on this- she's 8.5 and she and all her friends are madly into Sylvanians. I think they appeal more the older they get to be honest, as their cuteness registers. Dd doesn't have Willow Hall, but her Sylvanians have evicted the doll family from the 3 storey dolls' house, so they don't really need one.

PartridgeinaRustyBearTree · 03/12/2006 17:35

DD had Sylvanians from about 6, she stopped palying with them at about 10, but she didn't actually want to get rid of them even then - she used to get the Sylvanian magazine & there were teenage collectorsin there - some of them had massive collections. We still have a pretty big collection in the loft waiting for any GC.
They are expensive new, but we got most of our collection from boot sales, most of the new stuff was Xmas & birthday from GP.

PrincessPeaHead · 03/12/2006 17:36

ah, ok, so it fits that it is a bit of a trendy craze in her yeargroup at school then?

OP posts:
hatwoman · 03/12/2006 17:37

looks like I'm wrong about the appeal and the age. maybe dd will suddenly take an interest in a year or two.

hatwoman · 03/12/2006 17:38

I meant my (6 year old) dd

tamum · 03/12/2006 17:39

It might well be a trendy craze, but I honestly think they also have lasting appeal for some children. Go on, make her day

PrincessPeaHead · 03/12/2006 17:40

ok tamum so what are the top picks for families to install in this palatial mansion then
I think she has one set of rabbits so far - c'est tout

OP posts:
littlemissbossy · 03/12/2006 17:41

IMO I don't think she is too old - why is it that children have to grow up so quickly these days - BUY it, I would.

tamum · 03/12/2006 17:42

Well, dd is gettig hedgehogs for Christmas, which I think are amonsgt the least appealing (apart from the frogs) but it's what she wants. I think the cats and rabbits are the nicest, really. The Sylvanian Families website has loads of stuff you can't generally get here, they are big in Japan for some reason, so there are loads of Japanese sets. Like little Scottish SF. Weird.

PartridgeinaRustyBearTree · 03/12/2006 17:44

I love the red squirrels - they have lovely fluffy tails
The pandas' legs fall off (tho oddly, only the male ones)

PrincessPeaHead · 03/12/2006 17:45

ok cats and squirrels, no pandas, sounds good

do I need to buy anything else eg furniture, or will that do to start her off?
much appreciate this, btw, this is like initiation into a secret society

PartridgeinaRustyBearTree · 03/12/2006 17:45

Sylvanian website

tamum · 03/12/2006 17:46

OK, dd just arrived and said The Hawthorn Family belong in Willow Hall

tamum · 03/12/2006 17:48

All the families - I have a sneaking affection for the Truffle family.

PrincessPeaHead · 03/12/2006 17:48

oooooh, it is their house, is it?
do I need to get the twin babies too?
what are her views on the sylvanian ponies (she loves ponies)

OP posts:
PrincessPeaHead · 03/12/2006 17:49

truffle family are marvellous

macavity family are nice but I'm concerned they will eat the hawthorn family

OP posts:
tamum · 03/12/2006 17:49

Yes, dd is keen on the Sylvanian ponies but being a city child she's not very familiar with them in RL. You can get a little stable, I think... hang on
